Sean, I did the same as also read many fans saying they would sacrifice top 4 for Liverpool not winning the league. To me that is bitter and small-minded, I would never want my team to lose even if we had nothing riding on it, let alone a Champions League place.
I remember before the Liverpool Blackburn game hearing someone say James will likely just point to which corner Shearer should put it to ensure Utd didn’t win the league and it raised a smile, but once the game started I and I think most Liverpool fans were behind our team. Obliviously that day turned out pretty well in the end 😀
Nine, with all the other contenders struggling and no one pulling away Utd are certainly still in the mix for top 4, even if they have the most difficult task. Probably need to win all their remaining games, but if they did and the other continue their current form then they’ll get it.

Gini commented that the ref would of blown for a foul on Alisson if that header went in.

Defo pen for me at today’s City Spurs game. Ref seemed to have a good view so not sure why it wasn’t given.
Shouldn’t need VAR for such obvious situations.

Sean why bother watching football if you’re so sure on the outcome?
Actually I know why you’re being so negative, its self preservation against disappointment. Don’t like or agree with it however.

You raise an interesting point pagan about the subs in injury time will be interesting when that situation occurs. Or theres a contingency plan purely for subbing keepers.

Think they’re scrapping the away goal next season, anyone confirm that?

I think some of the rule changes will improve the game. For instance the ones about subs going off at the nearest part of the pitch not just the technical area or no subs in injury time. How often do we see a substitution in the 92nd minute and the player is as far away as possible and walks over in slow motion? Kills any momentum and excitement, which is exactly what the winning team wants, but as a neutral or fan of the losing team it infuriated me.
Some I don’t understand the need for. No rebounds from penalties. No attackers in the wall. Why? These worked perfectly ok in the first place.
The handball will cause most debate I’m sure. I think they are trying to make it clearer by saying pretty much everything is handball but safeguarding against attackers deliberately flicking the ball towards the arm, ala Suarez. The whole “close to the body and not made their shape unnaturally bigger” is open to interpretation. To me Llorente’s goal would fall within this category and therefore be a goal, but maybe this only applies to defending teams and penalties. The whole arm in natural position is funny as the most unnatural position is to tuck both of them behind your back!
As said before I cannot be sure if these changes will happen or are pure speculation.

Nine I disagree about the goal would not of counted next season. It was not scored with the hand, it was clearly the hip. It was not created by the hand either, it merely brushed it on the way to contacting the hip and this brush made no difference. It was neither intentional or avoidable. Goal for me.

After yesterdays epic battle between City and Spurs Saturdays match has nil nil written all over it!

Actually we were all over the place for the first 20 minutes or so. If Porto had a striker that could actually strike the ball well then we would of been in trouble.

I’ve seen the video where you can see the ball hit the elbow and the arm moves with the impact, but still not a pen. He was moving his arm away and it brushed it on the way to hitting his hip which forced it over the line. No intention, arm in a natural position, not the decisive contact, not a pen.

Hightown, can understand where you are coming from but I have to agree with Nil that VAR is there to serve a greater purpose. Imagine if Sterlings goal was given and then Spurs fans had to watch it over and over again on TV relays? They would be understandably livid that they were robbed of a first Champions League semi-final and a good chance of winning it.
As someone who no longer goes to matches but instead watches from the comfort of the living room I think it adds excitement, almost like pantomime. I want to ref to indicate his decision by use of a Roman Emperor style thumbs up or down just to add to drama. But again, can understand the frustration and confusion VAR causes in the stadium. It’s not perfect, maybe never will be, but it was used in 3 decisions last night that an unaided human couldn’t call and got them all correct.

Whenever I’ve watched Utd play recently I’ve had no idea what style of football they actually play. Are they are counter-attacking team? Long ball? Possession? Press or stand off? Utd need to establish their playing identity and work towards getting the players that fit it.
There was an incident last night when Barca were playing around at the back and the Utd forwards were pressing. The ball went back to Ter Stegen who passed it through the middle I think to Arthur who didn’t have a Utd player within 30m. It was like half the team were pressing, the others just standing off retaining shape. If you press from the front it’s bad enough giving the goalie an easy option but even worse if that option actually gives an opportunity to start an attack.
Pogba needs someone to do all the dirty work in midfield. If you stuck Kante there Pogba would be free to do what he is good at and you’d have a world class midfield. Matic and the other midfielders just are not good or mobile enough.

This feels different to 2014. Then I felt like we didn’t belong at the top as a title challenger, that we were just experiencing a freakish season (with a freakish goalscoring Suarez it must be said!), and we would return to being also rans the next season. This year we deserve to be this close, we are a much better balanced team with a fantastic manager. No matter what happens in the next few weeks we as LFC supporters can be very proud of the teams performances this season that rightly puts us back amongst today’s very best.
Still bloody hope we win it mind…

16th April 2019 at 11:48 am in reply to: Week 33, maybe 34, don't know… this weekends football! #37703The two north London teams are favorites for top four in my opinion, and for Utd to stand a chance of getting there I think they will need to win every single game. And that obviously includes next week against City were I will be unashamably cheering on those from Salford!
Last night was a big result from Arsenal if not a big performance, especially given their away form.

Was just about to post something similar about Sanchez!
I’ll throw another couple of overrated into the pile, Harry Macguire and Davinson Sanchez. Both look good on the highlights reel because they can head the ball but postionally they are all over the place and are pretty poor defenders . A bit like Matip. Except they can head.

Really Mikus? I actually think opposition teams let him stride forward knowing he will lose control at some point and leave a massive hole for them to counter attack.
Anyway, back to topic, most underrated: Wan Bissaka, although he is getting more plaudits these days
Most overrated? going to controversial and say Harry Kane. He is a good striker, maybe even a great one, but he is not the living Saint the English press make out. And I think Spurs play better football without him in the team.

He often gets criticised for not doing this but Klopp got his subs spot on and early enough to make the difference.
