I thought for most of the game we were the better team and Barca looked shocked that someone was willing to take the game to them.
3-0 feels hard to take because of way the boys played. First goal was a good cross and movement. VvD looked out of position and static but I also read Matip should of attacked the cross. Perhaps it was just good attacking play. 2nd goal was a good tackle from Fabinho that bounced off a Barca player onto Suarez’s knee, onto the bar then falls to Messi’s feet. Bad luck. 3rd goal a worldie of a free kick.
Obviously the free kick was great but I’m not going to jump on the game was changed entirely by the brilliance of Messi bandwagon. He didn’t dominate the game by any means, and as Mak pointed out the biggest influence to the scoreline was our own inability to hit the back of the net. I’m thinking the Mane chance from the superb Hendo cross, the Milner shot straight at the keeper from 12 yards and the triple miss and in particular Salah somehow hitting the post.
We are likely out but as HH says get an early goal and Anfield will be rocking. Get the fortune that they had yesterday and you never know.

Mikus you mention 4 games where we drew. If we were more clinical and won those games we’d be 8 points better off. Let’s assume we win our next two games, that would put us at 105 points. Is that a realistic expectation these days? Teams draw, teams loseit happens. Even great ones. Why not celebrate the team that has done better then any other Liverpool side ever? To me it’s very harsh to say we are missing something.
I’m a firm believer if you put an out an out clinical striker like Kane in this liverpool side he’d be top scorer but as a team we wouldn’t score as many.

How does it need addressing? Drop Salah? Drop Mane? Firmino? Ever think if we do that we would probably be more clinical but create far fewer chances and therefore score less.
Theres also been times when we’ve been incredibly clinical this season. No one can be like that all the time, unless you’re Messi or Ronaldo, but they are very much the exception.

Could of been 4, should of been 3-1. Wonder how big a miss that triple chance, and especially Salah against the post, was?
Funny game thought we were the better team for most of the match. They got very lucky with the second and a world class free kick for the third. A big ask for the return leg but you never know.

Will avoid wetting myself until the league is won and even then I can probably keep control on my bladder! Maybe some of our elder members might struggle!
City don’t have their usual yip in the first half but Pep usually sorts this out at half time and they get the goals they need. Lets see this time…

Leicester looking good under Brodgers. Sure the big 6 will be looking at Maddison.
This “race” for top 4 is crazy.

It’s a good point Chucky and I personally don’t like when fans say we bought X for this but sold Y for that and that means whatever. Transfers are far more complicated and as you said Liverpool haven’t received all the money for Coutinho and maybe never will. They did however pay Southampton 75m in one lump for VvD as a way of saying sorry for tapping him up and have paid nearly twice as much as anyone else in agent fees which are never mentioned during spending bragging rights. Liverpool are far from being angels in the transfer market.

You would think that players are categorised to their actual position, so Hazard would be up against Mane, Aguero and Sterling. Should he make the team above them? Debatable, same would be for Son.
Pogba is a strange one as I can think of about a dozen better than him. Maybe the votes were cast in the middle of the short lived Utd revival when Pogba did actually play well. Why these votes can’t be done at the end of season I’ll never know.

Oz, as I said before there are some things we agree on, like the potential for the game to dominated by a super-rich elite few. We are not there yet in my eyes, and if we were and coupled with a money-grabbing European Super League than I will walk from the sport. A lot of my frustration isn’t with you or Sean or anyone else on this site, but others on other forums. The outcry from Utd’s defeat has been embarrassing!
Speaking of Utd and getting back to the topic of the thread, they need a total transfer revamp, a bit like Liverpool did a few years ago. They need a strategy, identify what sort of play style they want to play and get the players that fit that system. And if Ole doesn’t work out, get a manager that fits that system. No more luxury buys for the sake of it, ala Sanchez when you really needed a right sided attacker. This is where you need a good DoF that embraces the teams ideologies and has the know-how to get those players/staff, and ruthless enough to get rid of those that don’t fit or work out.

Sean, I just don’t get why you and others give up at what seems every opportunity. What’s the point of watching? You say your view point is based on facts but it’s opinions, like saying there won’t be any more twists or turns.
It’s not just you, it’s not just this forum, but there’s lots of Liverpool fans all bleating on how hard done by they feel, or that it’s over, we can’t compete with moneybags City, or like your self somehow blaming one game in a season of 38 for our failure (even though we haven’t failed yet!). It pisses me off I admit. Actually it embarrasses me as I feel it taints all Liverpool fans the same as there so many like that.
I don’t mean to cause you or Oz or anyone else any insult, I just wish you’d stop saying it’s over until it actually is over.

That’s the spirit Sean, glad Klopp’s speech about turning doubters into believers worked for you… Jeez…
No single incident will win/lose the league, it’s over 38 games.
Wish people would stop feeling sorry for themselves and grow up a little.

Nil, the justification of 97 points and second place is that City would have 98 points and sometimes, whilst not nice to come second in such a close race, you have to applaud your opponent on such a fantastic achievement.
Try be the bigger man and take being beat, if it comes to that, with dignity.

Credit to City, after a tense first half they changed gear in the second and Utd were chasing shadows. I thought Utd would offer more and whilst at first they looked up for it they also lack quality. I can’t comment for the entire season but Fred looked a bit like Kleberson last night, out of his depth, and I have no idea what Pereira offers. With Pogba strolling around with his hands in his pockets (and getting out jumped by Sterling!!), this has to go down as on of the weakest Utd midfields for many years. And surely it’s time to stop labeling De Gea as World Class? He has been poor since the World Cup but is still being assessed on previous ability.
The league is not over, not yet. City overwhelming favorites for obvious reasons but Burnley away is not easy and I think they drew there last season. Brodgers will be desperate to win just to be able to say he won the league for Liverpool but in all likeliness it will go to the final game.
Whoever wins, it’s been an incredible effort by both teams. Two exceptional teams.

Nine, I know what Ole is doing, but I believe he has a point. So do others it seems:

Oz I know how you think the game is going and to a degree I am thinking the same but pretty much every week since Christmas all we hear from you is that the big bully City will win everything and poor little Liverpool can’t compete and will end up with nothing. Maybe you don’t intend to come over that way but that’s the way I read it in my head, usually with a solo violinist playing a sad song in the back ground. Believe it or not but Liverpool are hardly the bastions of virtue in the football world, we have also spent shit loads trying to buy the league, we have tapped up players, illegally recruited youngsters, spent more than anyone else on agents etc etc.
I’ve never said City will defiantly drop points, maybe they will, maybe they wont, but until it’s mathematically impossible I will still believe. I said before in response I think to a post from Sean, that what the both of you do is self-preservation, protecting yourselves from disappointment by mentally preparing yourselves for failure. If that’s the way you are then fine, but I was merely pointing out that it’s becoming a bit boring reading the same negative thing from you.

Nine, stats without context are pretty useless. Man City having one of the lowest foul counts could mean that they commit the least fouls, or that they get away with the most. And the covers all fouls, not just the technical ones I mentioned.
Anyone who watches Fernandinho must know he gets away with so much every game he plays. I’m not criticising Pep for using this, it works brilliantly with his tactics and as long as his team gets away with it then why not?!

Nine, assume you are referring to Ole’s comments about City getting away with nasty little fouls? Whilst I don’t think they are particular dirty, it does seem a tactic of theirs to use the professional foul against any would be counter attack. A clever tactic when you consider how well it allows them to throw more men forward and not worry too much about being exposed at the back.
As for Ole, we all know what he’s trying to do…
