The good thing for Spurs is they already have their trips to City and Arsenal out of the way and got creditable draws.

A lot of talk before the season started was that the gap between 2nd and 3rd would be much closer this season but although it’s still very early I’ve not seen anything to suggest that will be the case. City and Liverpool look out on their own compared to the other “big six”.
For 3rd and 4th I cant separate spurs, arsenal and chelsea at the moment. Utd look off the pace, read somewhere that there form since the honeymoon period is that of a bottom half team which must be worrying for their supporters.
Did enjoy the North London derby yesterday, great entertainment for the neutral.

Agree Mak although the Champsion League is always better for short trips than the Europa. There you can end up drawing against Dynamo Timbuktu or whoever and having to cross 18 time zones.
Ideal group for me:
Liverpool
Ajax
Leverkusen
GenkShort trips for the players, fairly weak opposition, and importantly good drinking for the fans.
I don’t think any English team should really be in fear of anyone, including either of the Madrids from pot 2.

Hi Ed, thought I’d let you know think there’s some spam messaging happening. I got an email saying I have a personal message and excitedly I opened it and got the following:
“Hello Deari saw your profile and became interested in you, my name is Marie Cooper i am working with united State Army, i will like to have a friend like you,i have something to share with you, please email me through (coopermarie442@gmail.com) for more information about me, i will check my mail to know if you have contacted me because i am working at the moment.”
So unless one of our members is in fact working for the US army and wants to share something with me, I’d assume there’s a spammer at work.

Results wise 4 points from 9 isn’t great but often teams are disjointed at the start of the season. But Poch’s words strike me as a deeper problem, maybe Eriksens’s situation is adversely affecting the team? Or Poch is pee’d off with Levy? Broken promises maybe?
Chucky, at least we are not all talking about Liverpool this time in a general match day thread eh?

Please let Liverpool get Leverkusen, they are only 20 minutes up the road and even if I couldn’t get a ticket (ha no chance!) I could go soak up the pre-game atmosphere.
Being in pot one obviously has it’s benefits, but those 3 English teams could still end up in a group like this:
City/Liverpool/Chelsea
Real Madrid
Inter Milan

Off the pitch Spurs look good but all does not seem ok on it. They struggled but in the end edged past Villa, somehow drew despite chasing shadows with City and lost to Newcastle in a very poor performance.
Poch has addressed the problems:
“This is my sixth season and the most unsettled group we are working with,” he admitted on Sunday, via Football.London.

Merson claiming Spurs are out of the title race already. Bit early perhaps, but he has a point saying they look a bit of a mess and Arsenal will fancy their chances.

I’d go for Pep Lijnders. As Klopp’s no 2 the transition would be smooth with the style carrying on from Klopp. Plus he has a few years to learn how to do all the manager type things.

Good post mate, and you’re spot on regarding the crowd. I’ve been to Anfield a few times and seen some good matches and great atmospheres, the best being the “ghost goal” semi in 2005, but don’t think I can compete with what you mentioned. But even watching on TV you can still get the feeling from a crowd that something special is happening. The best example I can think of was watching the 2012 Olympics and Super Saturday, the atmosphere that came across into my living room was great despite my then girlfriend moaning that she wanted to do something else. She was one of those you mentioned that didn’t get sport at all, rather sit in a cafe eating a muffin and drinking tea or something as mundane!

Only saw the highlights of the Utd game but have to say that first goal was shocking defending, looked like school kid stuff! Why was there such a big gap between centre backs?
Liverpool played well. Have to give a big shout out to Matip who was superb. A year ago I really did not trust him as I thought he was slow to react and not aggressive enough but he has really improved and made me change my opinion. Even scored a superb header! I still think Gomez will be the long term partner for VvD but at the moment I have no issues seeing Matip in the starting 11.

To try and steer the thread back on track the point I’m making is that transfers and improving the team is a lot more complicated than most think. You cant just expect a top play sign to be back up. It’s difficult to realistically improve for liverpool. For Arsenal, I think it’s ok to say they have a few areas to improve to catch liverpool and city. So a player like Pepe will move knowing he will be first choice.
Now they just need to improve that soft centre they have! To be honest I thought that should of been priority this summer.

They didn’t act then because Mignolet hadn’t left. As soon as he did they acted. If he decided to stay then we would have two back up keepers which is a bit unnecessary.
A Salah, or Mane, or VvD or whoever replacement are always being looked at. All top teams do it. And if one leaves then yeah they will have a list of players already scouted to act on. But they are not going to buy say Mbappe now just because Salah has flirted a little with Madrid and there’s a fear he may be off next season. That’s unfeasible.

How do you know they were scrambling? What’s wrong with a free agent? Don’t see your point sorry. I think they had identified Adrian a while ago as there was doubts about Mignolet for a long time. Teams always have back up plans well scouted. If Salah decides to up and leave I’m pretty sure a replacement would be found pretty sharpish.

Sean, that is no relevance. What if Henderson went the whole season injured, could we cover him? Most probably yes. Us like them have a lot of centre midfield players, it’s a position easier to rotate and keep good squad depth. But if they lost Aguero and play Jesus then the drop in quality is like us losing Firmino and playing Origi. They even went through a stage of playing Delph at full back recently (2 seasons ago was it?).
Yes they have one of the best squads, and yes that’s why they won 3 cups. So do Liverpool, that’s why we won one cup (the biggest).
Steveo, where would Liverpool invest? Who would improve the team and realistically come? I’ve asked this on that other forum and don’t think I got a sensible answer!

If City are on another level then it is only a tiny little 1 point size step away from Liverpool.
I agree with Sean that if we lose 2 of our front 3 we are considerably weaker, but I think you could say that about any team, even City. Lose Aguero and Sterling and what they stick in Jesus and Marhez, that’s a big drop despite how much they cost.
We maybe should of bought a young up and coming player for the LB position but maybe Klopp thinks we already have that in Larouci. Klopp has a reputation of developing what he already has rather than buying someone new.
LD is right in my opinion, just because you don’t “strengthen” doesn’t mean you are weaker. The team is older, 1 year more developed in Klopp’s ways, they keep the team unity that comes when successful.
The most important thing for Liverpool was to keep their main players and they did that. I really don’t understand the fuss that is made because we didn’t buy anyone. Sometimes people just want to buy for the sake of buying and better if it’s a nice expensive signing, who cares how he will fit in the team!
Arsenal and Utd are totally different, they are playing catch up, and it’s a big gap! The season will dictate if they bought wisely or not. The gap may be smaller this season but doubt it will be small enough to worry last season’s top two.

So it seems the general consensus is that Utd are crap, Chelsea are crap and Arsenal are Arsenal, surely this must be the best chance for a team like Wolves or Leicester to gatecrash top 4? Would like Wolves to do it, enjoy their style of play and Neves looks like a player that could shine in the Champions League.
