Utd have fast attackers that can counter, but against low block teams this is ineffective as there is no room. What they need is either clever central players that can move the ball quickly or attacking full backs that can overlap and overload with the winger against one side. When Utd signed Wan Bissaka I said although he is a very good defender he offers little going forward and asked if that’s the sort of player Utd need.

Nine I certainly do not underestimate what Terry achieved and how he contributed to it. Rightly so a Chelsea legend. But I rate what VvD has done since coming to Liverpool as the highest positive influence a defender has single-handedly impacted on a team in a short period of time. Terry was great for you lot, he also had similar level players around him. Before VvD Liverpool’s defence was their Achilles Heel, we were often mocked for it. Since VvD came and stamped his authority, with help from Herr Klopp and the team admittedly, it’s one of the best in the World. The transformation has been nothing short of sensational.

We have scored a number of late goals because we have had to and we have to keep up the tempo. We concede a large amount when we are coasting and saving energy. Four nil up against Norwich I can fully understand but at two nil it’s a very risky tactic. So far we have go away with it. I hope Klopp can fix this, save energy yes but with a little more control.

Interesting article in The Echo today about a deliberate tactic that could be the likely cause of our poor defensive record this season.

I said it was lazy, but not just about Messi, but to quote goals as a measure of greatness is lazy. Does it mean Clive Allen is an all time great? What about Kevin Phillips? I said you should measure a players influence on their teams success to determine if they have had a great season or not but all you Messi lovers keep quoting 51 goals 50 games crap. It lacks substance to the debate.
I’ve not seen a lot of Messi this year but I did see was him sulk with his head dropped, with no desire to do anything other feel sorry for himself when if he put some effort in he may of helped get a goal that would of qualified his team to the biggest final in club football. But no, he acted like a petulant child, that did not show me a player that was the greatest this year in football. Then you see VvD and how he has helped influence and transform this Liverpool team it’s totally different.
Mikus may of overstated VvD by saying he is the greatest defender in decades but this year he has produced the best defensive displays over the year that I can recall. Terry, Campbell, Rio, Kompany, all great players, but none have influenced their team to success like VvD has done this year.

“to be fair you only have to look at the stats provided for Messi in the LAST YEAR alone to see he deserved the prize”
This is the sort of comment that makes these arguments about who is best worthless, it totally discards many aspects of football and just focuses on scoring lots of goals presumably against mediocre opposition. It’s a weak and lazy argument.

The thing I’m against Messi winning it is although the scored 51 goals he isn’t the player he was. He doesn’t have the role anymore because he cannot do it, age has caught up on him. He is simply a wonderfully talented goal scorer in a team engineering to maximise those talents. He does not track back, he does not help out when the going gets tough, he stands with his hands on his hips looking like a spoilt child who’s been told he cannot play anymore, looking in disgust at his teammates. He is supposedly the captain but shows zero captain attributes.
Sadly I think goals and fancy skills still rule peoples opinions. I would had loved it if VvD won, I would love it if a hard tackling midfielder wins in the future, or a fullback, whatever, someone who has massively influenced their teams season. When Barca needed Messi to influence theirs at their most crucial time, he sulked, his head dropped and he failed.

Don’t think Mahrez wouldn’t even get into my Man City top ten!

Ryan had a very good first half.
Wednesday will probably be fairly predictable I think. We will dominate and try and use our FBs for width, Everton will try and disrupt our game as much as possible. On paper we should win easily but like against Utd it rarely seems easy against them. Think it could be a horrible game to watch but we have enough. 1-0 just to break the 2-1 routine!
Would love Salah to score one of those 25 yard curlers coming off the wing like he did many times a couple of seasons ago (including vs Everton I think). Would do his confidence the world of good.

Our form is funny at the moment. Our front 3 are not firing as usual maybe with the exception of Mane and our midfield doesn’t score enough. We are leaking goals every game although I think VvD form is still as good and Lovren has done well since getting back in the team. And yet somehow we sit comfortably top. We could start to drop points or we could just as easily hit top form and start winning 3 or 4-0.
The last game was a strange one. We could of been 5-0 up at half time if we took our chances. Then Alisson had a bit of a brain fart and rightly got sent off but the free kick was disgraceful from Atkinson. Goalies always stand on the far post to line up the wall before moving to their side and never have I seen a ref blow his whistle whilst the goal is exposed like that. Fair play to the Brighton player for quick thinking mind.
If that crazy incident never happened we’d probably all be commenting on a professional performance from Liverpool just missing the goals it deserved. By the way, before Chucky comes in with a smart-arse/bitter comment about Liverpool’s corner vs Barcelona I’d just like to point out corners do not wait for a whistle unless the ref/linesman signals due to pushing or injury etc.

Thought this was a city discussion?
January will be difficult for any team to buy top players but can see City buying a few in the summer. Aguero us getting in, Silva is retiring, Sane is likely off and Otamendi and Stones just ain’t good enough.

Another player I think City have missed is Sane. Sterling is very good, Mahrez is ok, but they both like to come inside. Sane was left footed playing on the left and was so quick and direct. I saw many goals when he would get to the byline and do a nice little cut back for an onrushing midfielder to score. He had the ability to change the pattern of City’s attack, to do something a little different.
I think him missing is something City will have to address even after he recovers from the injury as it looking likely that he is off to Munich.

In my opinion is that VvD should win, but I suspect it will be the usual Messi love-in that seems to always happen and to me that is undeserved, he did not influence his team to an overly successful season.
Messi has been the best player for the last 10 years and has deserved to win all those times before (same with Ronaldo) but I would find the awards process pretty rubbish if they cannot see past the fact another player has had a greater season than him.

I would never argue who had the best season by using stats, it can be very misleading. What I use is how has the player influenced their teams season in a positive way towards their goals either winning something, qualifying or staying up. Messi scored lots of goals, big deal, but Barca’s season was still not a great one. Clive Allen back in the 80s scored a stupid amount of goals one season, yet he wasn’t the best player that season.
For me the debate between Messi, VvD and Mane over who has had the most influence there can only be one winner and that is big Virgil.
Personally I don’t care so much if the leak is correct and Messi wins it will just go to show in my eyes how stupid and possibly corrupt the whole awards process is. I’m just glad VvD is playing in my team to the standard he is.

Laporte is a huge miss but I said at the beginning of the season not replacing Kompany was a mistake and despite my point being dismissed by some City fans I think it was justified. Not just his leadership ability, also the numbers, 3 senior defenders for 2 spots is not enough.
I read somewhere that City are at their limit regarding overseas players (max 17 in the 25 man squad) and therefor either need to buy English (hence maybe why they looked at Macguire) or sell a non-home grown player to make space. This could be wrong, I can’t be bothered checking the facts.
I suggest you sell that De Bruyne fella, we’ll take him 🙂

Brian HS2 those figures for HS2 are in billions not millions. Trust me I work on it! Think the main stand didn’t increase too much in cost, normally the biggest issue is residents near by.

Who is Nil’s most hated manager? Not Ancelotti? Know he waffled something the other day about hating him but I assumed it was just one of his mid game rants where everyone that looks like given Liverpool even the remote chance of resistance is deemed to be worthy of his hate.
Anchelotti is one of the most repected managers in the game, with all the trouble going on at Napoli maybe he will jump ship, but doubt it unless they somehow get knocked out of the CL.
