Nine, was going to give you a thumbs up for using the word extrapolate, it’s such a delightful sounding word.
But then you ruined it by bad maths!
43+3>45
So no thumbs up for you! π
Not wanting to go down the old City/CAS thing again on this thread hence the word “might”, but 5th place would be a EL place at least whilst 7th I’m guessing wouldn’t?

One big problem I see is that Sheff Utd and Villa both have a game in hand (as do City and Arse but that’s less important). Sheff Utd win that they go 5th which might be a CL position, Villa win and they move out of the bottom 3.
If you’re going to end the season then it’s very unfair on the teams that haven’t played the same amount of games as the rest.

Henry Winter
Chief Football Writer for the Times on BBC Radio 5 Live
“There are some clubs that will have serious problems. This idea that on 3 April the sirens stop and we go back and play football again is just naive.
What the medical advisers are saying is this is a long period – possibly 12-14 weeks. The date of 3 April has just been come up with and then they will think again.
I wouldn’t be surprised if English football is playing in June. Obviously the Euros would have to be put back a year, then it’s just a question of the sporting integrity of football as to when league programmes are finished.
Take for example West Bromwich Albion. They are fighting to get back in the Premier League. If West Brom go up, that’s worth a minimum of Β£20m in television money alone.
The Premier League and EFL need to show leadership – which they should’ve done earlier in the week – to go through and work out how they can reach a conclusion to the season, but the obvious casualty of that is Euro 2020.”

Nine, it’s the BBC Sports Editor. Yes I’m sure the main reason is because of the virus spread but it could also provide a solution, depending on the individual country’s status versus that of the very spread out Euros.

“But the hope is that next week a decision is taken to postpone Euro2020 for a year, thereby freeing up space in the calendar to re-schedule outstanding matches and complete domestic league seasons across the continent at some stage.”

I saw it in the telegraph but that is hardly concrete proof, there is nothing official anywhere.

I’ve not seen or can find an official rule regarding the 65 days, anyone else seen it?

Seems like Arteta has the virus but Mendy is self isolating like the three Leicester players. Seems the cancellation of the City v Arse game was very much justified!
With the meeting on Tuesday with all the top footballing people I’m fairly sure this weekend’s matches will be the last football we see for a while…
Edit: Hudson-Odoi also has it. I can’t see many games going ahead this weekend to be honest. The mirror has something on their back page about the rest of Europe being in disbelief over the games going ahead and that pretty much sums it up. The UK will act but it will be too late.

No Pagan finishing a football league isn’t top priority but this is a football forum hence why I and others are discussing what could happen.
I never said hand out trophies if the league is incomplete, my opinion is to lock down everyone from a highly infected country and suspend all events, sport or otherwise, until the situation is better. And they should do it now before it’s too late. I was just stating some of the problems voiding or curtailing would occur. Compared to the many deaths etc they are insignificant but as said this is a football forum, and in the footballing world they are important points.

If you void the league then teams like Liverpool, Leeds, Leicester would be in uproar. Also there’s a chance England would have no CL teams as effectively no one will have qualified for it. You cannot just assume the previous years teams would be given automatic entry again and why should they?
If you stop and keep the current positions as the final positions then teams like Utd, Wolves, Fulham, Bournemouth and Villa would be in uproar. You might even get City complaining saying it was still possible for them to win the league if Liverpool haven’t secured it first.
There’s also compensation to consider for TV companies and maybe the subscribers, and sponsors etc.
And this would be for the whole English football world at every level. Whole big can of worms could be opened…

12th March 2020 at 11:38 am in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #84654Yes 2 or 3 at a push I thought they were highly likely to be a goal.
I think everyone has said Liverpool were wasteful in the final 3rd, but still 9 shots on target, and therefore 7 saves, is a lot.

Madrid players now in quarantine, I would assume that will effect the game vs City?
With players now getting the virus (Madrid was a basketball player but they share the facilities with the football team) and teams unable to travel to certain countries I cannot see how the European competitions can carry on. The best ting to do in my opinion is to delay the season and postpone the Euro Champs, therefor giving the leagues time in the summer to finish. The problem is that we don’t know for sure how long the virus will be with us, with some reports suggesting a European peak in summer.
Even with closed stadiums and pubs unable to show matches, there will still be issues. If there is a spectator ban for when Liverpool win the league I’m pretty sure there will be a few thousand outside, so how does that help the situation? PSG had loads outside last night.
Delay all leagues and lock down every highly infected country now. Learn from Italy and don’t leave it too late.

12th March 2020 at 10:45 am in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #84624World class goalies make world class saves look comfortable due to their superb reading of the game and positioning. And he did it many times last night, so yeah he had a great game.

12th March 2020 at 8:37 am in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #84547Am I the only one that actually thinks we were brilliant for 90 minutes last night but as a result of all that effort against a top class defensive team we ran out of steam? They played with 10 behind the ball in a very disciplined shape and yet we moved them all over the place creating numerous good chances. It was probably the best midfield performance of Liverpool this season, Ox in particular looking good. Any talk of Liverpool needing a creative midfielder based on last night is silly, and if you say Liverpool cannot defend I ask you to take a look at the league goals conceded column.
With the intensity we played at we needed the second goal in the 90 minutes, and without Oblak having a storming game or maybe slightly better composure we would of got it. In extra time it was clear we would be shattered but after we scored I still felt we could hold on but conceding so soon and in such a poor way deflated the team and crowd. We needed a huge effort to come back from that and the players just didn’t have that to give.

“Itβs a big problem to solve which goes much further than just the PL and there are far far bigger problems ahead with this Corona Virus which is going to cost people their lives and you wonder whether we shouldnβt be shutting our boarders and parking all Sport alongside , Theatreβs, Cinemas, Sports Centres and Swimming Pools etc etc sooner rather than later”
Linekar just retweeted something about the fact Atletico fans are not allowed to watch their team in their own stadium but there’s a few thousand in Liverpool today for the game. Same will apply next week with City.
Regarding a specific date for when the league must end I’m not convinced by that, and there’s a lot of suggestions that the Euro’s be delayed to give leagues time to finish in the summer.
Edit: we are now getting Italian teams being refused entry for Euro competitions and other nations teams refusing to travel to Italy. Won’t be long before France, Spain and Germany is as affected.

Mav, I’m not sure to be honest, there’s no real solution that would keep everyone happy. I found this online regarding Seria A’s current suspension:
“According to La Repubblica newspaper, there are three options open to the Lega Serie A in these circumstances.
Postponing Euro 2020 would seem to be more likely if the virus continues to spread throughout Europe, as there was another significant spike in cases in Spain today.
It could be put back to the Autumn, or even to next year.
Another alternative would be putting together a crammed fixture list for the final month with a game every two to three days, postponing the Coppa Italia entirely until June or August.
The worst case scenario would see the season end here, so the FIGC would not assign a Scudetto at all, only European places.
When it came to relegation, the clubs would be protected, so promote the top two in Serie B (without additional promotion play-offs) and increase Serie A to 22 teams.”

You are right Mav, I’m sure the Forest players and staff will have been tested after this has become known.

11th March 2020 at 8:50 am in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #83908Nine, the thing is I don’t think there’s anyone within football that couldn’t of predicted that Jose would behave the way he has. Maybe the only surprise is that he has reverted to that behavior so soon. It really begs the question why Spurs employed him in the first place.
He should stick to punditry, heard he was pretty good and appeared happier. Or maybe try international football. But as a club manager he was finished even before utd made their mistake with him.

“Man City v Arsenal has now been postponedβ¦..Pagan”
This is because the Arsenal players came in contact with an infected person (Olypiakos chairman I think) within 14 days and so haven’t really got a team, it’s not because of fear of spreading the disease amongst supporters. If things worsen which is looking likely then behind closed doors matches is very likely. I can see that happening in a week or two.
I read (don’t quote, unofficial story and maybe rubbish) that the league will only be cancelled if a player is infected. I’m sure they will be tested regularly at the moment. If it is cancelled and the results voided for the season, then yeah it’s shit for Liverpool and also for many other teams like those looking at promotion, but it’s because of an issue that is much bigger than football.
