You can’t just take Ronaldo out and think Utd would be worse off missing his goals, the whole dynamic of the team would likely change. He is a world class finisher no doubt about that but a passenger when it comes to defending. But without him maybe the team can actually press (would need to sort out Pogba and Fernandes too mind, like only ever play one) and as a team would be better off? Maybe Utd’s strikers score less but the team as a whole scores more and more importantly wins more? All ifs, buts and maybes but football is always about the team not the scoring exploits of one exceptionally good finisher.
I’ve maintained the thoughts since he signed that whilst many will see him as the most positive thing in the Utd team he is actually one of the main causes of their failures and would be better off benching him for Cavani.

Mak, the reason I put Fabinho as our most important is because of the role he plays. When he is on his game he let’s everyone else play. If he has a bad game or his replacement does our cbs are badly exposed. It’s the way we play with a high line, attacking full backs and a full pitch press. The DM role played well with discipline is integral to the success of such a system and he is by far our best at it. Doesnt mean he is our best player, Salah, Alisson and VvD are obviously ahead of him.
Regarding money and having fans back, our finances are based on predicted earnings but that always lags a year behind. So for this year’s transfer budget it is based on the predicted earnings of last year which will be negative because of the pandemic. Other teams do things differently, but I believe this is the way we do it. Whether it’s the best way is a whole different topic mind.

Nil trying to rekindle the Ossie Ardilas Spurs famous 5 attacking formation!
Sean obviously finances are playing a big part now. But Klopp has often said its difficult to get players of quality in that will improve the squad, even before the pandemic. There are players out there that can of course make us better but are they available, do they want the move etc? I don’t see the point of just adding players to the squad that are inferior to what we already have, it’s better that we manage better with what we already have until a player we really want becomes available.

Sean, proven right by the fact we haven’t bought all these midfielders not that there’s no issue.
Nil, no misunderstanding at all. You’ve picked one midfielder as a solution for our midfield issue. We’d score but probably lose 8-7 every match 🤣

Nil your solution to the midfield crises is to remove the midfield? 🤔

Yes Jota has worked, but that is an exception not the norm. And he came in as cover for 3 positions hence a much increased chance of playing, so 3 out of 4. If we want another midfielder then it’s 3 out of what 9? So yeah when players are injured like now they will play but what happens when our injury get better? They might not even make the bench. You try finding a player good enough that is happy with that.
I’ve read many times about players rejecting Liverpool as their path would be blocked by world class players. You cannot sell a transfer to a good player saying you will get games because we are guessing we will have injuries. They want guaranteed playing time.
Not just Liverpool, its why Spurs have always struggled to get decent back up to Harry Kane. If you are good enough you want to be playing as much as possible.
I’ve argued so much about this it’s kinda boring me now. But without wanting to sound arrogant I’ve been right pretty much each time as we are still talking about the same situation after a few years now. If, as one particular poster on TT has said, it’s simple you just make them fight for the spot and whoever wins gets it then why haven’t we just bought all these players (when we had money)? Because that is not how it works.

Mak, Gini was a good player for us no questioning that. He was like the oil in an engine, he kept things moving in midfield and linked the team together superbly. But he was never one to take a game by the scruff of the neck and dominate, or roll his sleeves up and get stuck in a battle of attrition. There were many times even before last season that when the going got tough Gini went hiding. Hence why I don’t think we missed him yesterday.
One day we may find out the reasons Gini never signed an extension. The fact that he was all set to make his dream move to Barca then at the last minute change for the extra money in a less challenging league speaks volumes but I’m just speculating.
Yesterday we missed Fabinho. I’ve said it before that he is our most important player. More than VvD, more than Alisson and more than Salah. We could do with quality back up for him but as I’ve mentioned on that other forum it’s not easy. It’s hard to convince a player to be understudy no matter how much is mentioned about our injury prone players and most importantly we have next to nothing to spend.
Take the young lad from Monaco, Tchouameni linked with us in todays Echo. 21 years old, perfect age. Plays DM and is regarded as having great potential. But to join us he would be as a bench player. When you also consider teams like Juve are after him who might offer a first team place then we become less attractive. Then you consider we probably cannot afford the 40m odd asking price plus the no doubt very high agent and signing on fees.

Mak there were multiple games last season when Gini was captain and he’d go missing letting teams slice through us at will. He was terrible for 2/3s of last season at a time the team needed it’s seniors players to step up. He didn’t, he went and hid as best he could. He has never been one to dominate a game or stand up when everything around him is falling apart.
Ox wasn’t great and probably isn’t good enough but he wasn’t the reason we drew. Jones was in my opinion the worst player on the pitch but I would blame him either. This is an error of Klopp’s game management, he should of seen the Henderson needed more help and dropped Jones back. This is the one area Klopp does have a weakness.

29th October 2021 at 12:27 pm in reply to: Gameweek 10: You’re getting fired in the morning…. #187548Utd should bench Ronaldo, he is a complete passenger when defending. You can only get away with playing him at the elite level if the entire team is built around him.
I fancy a score draw between the sack race face off and both keep their jobs for at least another week.

Away to spurs then away to Atalanta. Pressure will be on but he could get two results to keep him in the job. I suspect its the next game after those that might prove might prove a little more significant. I can’t even imagine how Utd fans would feel if City dish out a hammering at Old Trafford.

I believe Zidane has very poor English so that could cause an issue. I’ve read and please do not shoot the messenger that Utd could consider an interim manager like Carrick before going for Southgate when his England contract is up. Seems a bit far fetched to me as his contract is up after the world Cup next year and that is some way still. Plus I can’t imagine utd fans happy seeing 5 at the back plus 2 DMs every week!

Ed I knew you weren’t arguing with my point just wanted to make sure it came across correct.
Two under pressure managers next weekend and to be honest I think it has a draw written all over it which will do neither any good. Then Utd host City. Everyone will be saying another spanking for utd but we’ve been here before when Utd have pulled off some good results against City when written off.

Not sure if your response was to me but I was not signalling out individuals but more how they are utilised and that is down to the manager and his team. Utd can be successful with Ronaldo up top but it needs to be carefully managed with compromises made elsewhere. But putting him in with Fernandes, Pogba and Rashford is going to really put a strain on the rest of the team.
Utd on paper have a very good squad, easily in the top 4. As you said Ed whoever takes over will inherit some very good players. I think they need to reduce the number of “luxury” players starting especially versus the top sides and the transfer priority should be a world class DM, possibly even changing to 433. And run a lot more in training!
I agree with what you said about van der Sar. I think Utd need a clear vision and continuity even when the manager changes. Might take a one or two more manger changes however to reap the rewards.

And then there was 3. I think we can rule Utd out of the title challenge now, one I am sure many thought would be strong after spending so much in the summer.
I’m sure you’ve all seen the damning stats. Utd, worst tackles won in the league, most errors leading to goals, 4th worst defensive record. Not sure on the running stat but did read that Ronaldo has ran the least per game of any striker in the league.
It’s going to be a very tight and interesting title race between City, Chelsea and Liverpool. All 3 have distinct styles but one thing in common is that they all work hard.
Ronaldo, Rashford and Fernandes are lazy and offer nothing to the defensive side of things. A team can have one of these players easily maybe even two depending on the opposition, but the rest of the team needs to be set up to compensate.
Varane I think will be a good buy, Sancho is a strange one as he looks a shadow of the player in Germany but Ronaldo was a mistake. I feel for Cavani who does work hard and Utd would be better off playing him and benching Ronaldo.

I’ve not posted here for some time but I do occasionally pop in for a read but I feel I must congratulate chucky on some brilliant posting. Absolutely spot on. It’s very disappointing that the FA have a fit and proper test regarding owners and their financial status but don’t give a damn about the human rights side of things.

Would love to know what you City fans think I’m arguing against. I have stated why I think Everton have asked for full disclosure. I never said anything about City being in the wrong, whether the game should of been played or not, or what my thoughts on the safety is. I have stated the Premier League regulations. These include health and safety to probably the highest level. Again not my opinion on health and safety. They also state the conditions of postponement due to Covid. Not regular injuries, and again not my opinion.
Brian, gjblues and Adlab your replies have made no sense whatsoever. Its like you have made something up in your head that you now feel obliged to defend against. So if you want to continue like that then I will walk from this site, not because I feel offended, but because I can’t be bothered discussing with fucking idiots.

I’m just trying to downplay expectations as I really don’t think we will sign anyone and as you say Nine it may come down to what we already got. Trust me I’d love it if Edwards is pictured next to a smiling Koulibaly announcing a 4 year deal or Tyrone Mings is pictured doing the Melwood (Kirkby?) lean but I just can’t see it happening.

Yeah read that Mav after a quick Google search. Also read that the Premier League rules state that a game can only be postponed if a team has less than 14 first team players available. A player being regarded as first team if they have played a single minute of first team football, no matter if they are usually regarded as u23 or u18. Everton are asking if that is the case or if City have been given a special dispensation to postpone. You really cannot blame them for asking.
As for not wishing City staff and or players to get better sounds like a very childish arguement. Maybe they did privately? What does it matter?

Garay hasn’t played since February after being out with acl and at 34 I’d say is more of a risk than the youngsters. Plus we’d need someone off the non home grown list first.
