Rafa’s great, will always be a legend to liverpool fans. But maybe the game has moved on and he hasn’t? Bit like Mourinho. A managers method can only have a limited time of success if he doesn’t adapt to the change in football.
I wanted Rafa to have some success at Everton for the admiration I have for him but can totally get Ed’s point regarding the animosity from Everton fans. If his ways worked then I’m sure he would win many of them over but they are not. It’s like a perfect negative storm for those fans now, a manager you don’t like with the team playing poorly. Agree with those saying a lot of problems stem before Rafa’s appointment however but like many situations in life he who touched it last gets the blame!
Think the Everton situation will get worse in the next year or two no matter who is manager. They are failing FFP due to crazy spending with zero reward and will need to sell some of their few prized assets.

You cannot discount Bayern they are looking just as strong as Chelsea, City and Liverpool.
Liverpool were superb last night. Something like 8 changes and still put in a good performance. Didn’t understand Milan’s thinking, they only attacked with intent around 85 minutes. I think if they won they’d have gone through so why not attack from the start and get the crowd worked up?
Just seen the City highlights. Walker what were you thinking? Good defender probably one of the best 1v1 with his pace but an absolute wally sometimes. Minimum 1 game ban but could be 2.

Interesting take on Arteta. I thought he’d be a good manager and not just because he once sat next to Pep, more because he comes across as an intelligent person that I imagine studies the game to the nth degree. But maybe you are right about not being able to change to plan B. In the recent Liverpool game he continued to play out from the back with very risky passes against a high pressing team which resulted time after time in losing possession. Why not change it? Very simple and obvious but he kept the team playing from the back and very close to each other. Crazy.

City were lucky to get away with a point at home against Southampton!
If City lose de Bruyne to a season ending career than that could be deemed as bad luck and would have a big say on whether they win or not. But things like fatigue, knocks etc City are the team best to cope with it because of the quality in depth they have. But every team needs luck to win a league.

Nil have a think what would happen to our press and attack play if we didn’t play a high line. It actually worked well today.
Thiago has been great the last few games. Always knows what’s around him and quick to move it on or switch direction.

No team in the history of everything has won the league without utilising squad players. This is where luck comes in, if you are lucky you won’t have to do this so much and can play your best players most of the time. Take liverpools title winning season, we were lucky and didn’t need to rotate so much so we won despite City having a squad with more quality depth.
I’m not sure why you are arguing about this it’s not exactly a new concept I’ve dreamt up.

Take last season, it was a much shorter season with high frequency of matches. There was only ever going to be one winner and that was the team with the largest amount of quality players. When their first choice got tired or injured they could swap then out with minimal decrease in quality compared to the other teams. Every team last year suffered with the fatigue that the truncated season brought but City were in a much better position than others to deal with it.
This year we dont have such a problem which is why a team like liverpool who have a very high quality first choice could win if they are lucky that they don’t pick-up many injuries. City and Chelsea this isn’t as much an issue with their “big” squads.
Edited for typos. Typing like Sean tonight 🤣

Lucky, I thought it would of been a given that when talking about big squads going for the title it was big squads of quality players. City have the largest amount of top quality in their squad. We all know the squad size minus u21 is 25. Apologies if that didn’t come over clear enough.
Liverpool can win then league of course, but they need to be lucky with injuries, arguably more so than Chelsea and certainly City.

To win the league every team needs luck although the bigger the squad the more bad luck you can cope with. Interesting couple of months with the busy festive period, Afcon (2 games I believe if it goes ahead), Chelsea with the world club Cup (again if) Its all pointing in City’s favour but you never know it can all change with 2 bad results.

Chucky if salah went down holding his leg or something demanding the physio to come for a couple minutes treatment before being subbed off in which he limps the long way round then yeah you could say it was the dark arts. But a team taking the lead in the final minutes making a defensive substitution? Give you head a wobble!

Apparently Ronaldo has injured his knee doing that celebration of his against Arsenal and is a doubt for Sunday.

I really have no idea what utd will do. I don’t know what style they want. They went toe to toe with Liverpool and got hammered. They got hammered at least performance wise by City. They then shut up shop and got a very good point against Chelsea. Granted Arsenal are none of those teams quality wise but they can play good football if given the chance. Going to be interesting for the neutral.

Arsenal for me. Utd will not press which will suit Arsenal who will dominate possession.

Many fans think hating others is acceptable as a show of the love or pride of their team. Not just football either, can just look at the American elections or Brexit for examples where people feel justified in showing hate towards those that oppose them. It’s the sad state of our society and seems to be getting worse.

Yeah Sean going to be interesting regarding Ragnick, as we know he likes his teams to press. Utd don’t have enough players to press, you need everyone doing it or the opposition will have an outlet. Its also isn’t something you can just adapt to straight away, it took Klopp a while to get his team to do it correctly. A high back line is better used as it compresses the play which is needed for a press, maybe Varane and Bailey will be the more suitable pairing when fit?
He is also a builder of teams from the bottom up with far more modest means. Someone who develops youth and systems. But this takes time and utd will be about challenging and winning now or in the not too distant future.

Arsenal bring a lot of their problems onto themselves by overdoing the play out from the back when they haven’t got the right players to do so. Against Liverpool it was crazy that they kept doing it even though everyone knows how much the Liverpool front 3 will press. Might not have led to a goal but more often than not led to a turn over in possession. Utd won’t do that, they don’t press.
Think Arsenal will have more possession and utd hit on the break. I fancy Arsenal to win they look the better team at the moment.

I said on that other site that I don’t think you should be too harsh on the goal conceded. VvD had to confront the player making the pass as he was beyond the midfield. That meant Matip had to be in the position he was to cover two attackers. I think it was probably Trent that could have done more by reacting to the danger quicker to take the nearest attacker to him from Matip giving a 2 on 2 but he was a little too slow and the gap too big. He looked like he was ready for another attack as already making his way up the pitch and maybe a little complacent.

That midfield of Hendo, Fab and Thiago is so good. They really complement each other very well and have a good understanding. Henderson seems to thrive in that attacking mezzala position. We’ve seen it a few times already this season when the forward right sided midfielder drift out and links with Salah and a more central Trent.
Henderson motm for me he really was the driving force. Salah was brilliant again and took his goals with so much composure which isn’t easy at the speed he travels. Thought Jota was more involved today than previous games, pressing well and coming deep often. Maybe not yet at Firmino’s level with those aspects but he does other a far bigger goal threat than the Brazilian.
