We signed Diaz because Mane was known to be going. You dont sign a player like this because a couple of players are injured until march or even for the rest of the season. He would have a plan already laid out and I doubt someone of his quality and reputation would be happy as 2nd or even 3rd choice.
I would guess Jota will make way in the summer but that just because I think Gakpo plays a very similar role and that Jota is the one that can be improved on the most. I could say Nunez as I don’t rate him so far but he is new to a league and could make it good but so far has looked far off what we need. But I’d hope for a better suited no 9 than Gakpo if that were to happen as I think he is more an AML.

Apart from not currently being injured. Is he an option up front like Bobby? Or is he an AML that can play up top but not as well as an out an out striker the same as Jota?
Too many AML at the club if this goes ahead. 3 senior and one junior in Carvalho with people like Jones able to play there too.

27th December 2022 at 10:45 am in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #201859Mixed about Gakpo. Understand what Mikus has said regarding the injuries to Jota and Diaz and with Gakpo mainly operating on the left he can cover them whilst injured but you dont buy a player just to cover injuries for a few months, a player like him will have a progress path laid out and agreed with him. He can also play up front or even on the right, but I have not seen much of him there, and he is another right footed attacker. So where does this leave the squad once everyone is fit? Will one of Diaz or Jota leave as surely we do not need 3 first team AML, or will he play striker and one of Bobby (most likely anyway) or Nunez leave?
Would of preferred a left footer attacker to cover both Salah even though he is a machine when it comes to injury prevention and the striker position. Still think Joao Felix is the attacker we need, not Gakpo or Nunez.
Don’t think this will impact the pursuit of Bellingham as I am sure that will be for the summer. Not sure how the sale, or investment, or whatever is happening with the club will impact transfers.

Sean I mean static as in his starting position, as a more orthodox striker as opposed to someone who comes deep and drags players around for others to attack the space. He moves a lot but usually in a very direct fashion, is that what this team needed? I didn’t think so in the summer and he hasn’t exactly changed my mind.
9 goals yeah but think how many a striker would have given the chances Nunez has if they could actually finish? He has missed some easy one. He has been very poor so far.

I said when we signed him that Nunez was the wrong player only to be told on some other site that I didn’t know what I was talking about because he did so well against our makeshift defence one game. Someone even told me they have “scouted” him for over a year and therefore their opinion carried far more weight than mine!
He has fantastic physical attributes. He is fast, tall and very direct. But he has the technical attributes way below Premier League standards and the worst decision making I think I’ve seen of any striker at Anfield. People still defend him (although it seems some are changing to my way of thinking) in that he is a rough diamond and Klopp will make him good and sure that could happen but he hasn’t given any indication he will. He looks unsettled and lost in the system and likely back on the bench when Bobby, Jota and Diaz are all fit.
My reason I thought and still think he was the wrong signing was because I didn’t think he would fit the system, him being a more static no 9 when we needed a Firmino style link striker. Someone like Felix who now appears set to leave AM or Chelsea bound Nkunku. Time to sell? Not yet unless we could get someone like Felix now but most others would prove difficult in January. But in the summer yes unless he changes dramatically.

Was a very good game, thought England probably edged it. England have a lot of young talent, Bellingham, Rice, Saka, Foden (bit ineffective tonight however) so the future looks good for you.
The ref was terrible, must have been 3 blatant fouls that were ignored.

I’ll admit I suspended my boycott and watched the Germany v Costa Rica game and the drama from that and the Japan Spain game was fantastic. The atmosphere in the stadium not so much, not when you watch previous World Cups it all seems very sterile.
One thing I have noticed is the lack of interest. I live in the 4th largest city in Germany but I’ve not seen a single flag, face painted or advert for communal viewing. There’s little talk about it, think maybe the timing I wrong as Germans are too interested in their Christmas markets! Obviously what little interest there was has now completely evaporated!
One bright note for the Germans is Musiala, that kid looks like he will be a top top player. Another one to add to the Chelsea let go massive mistake list?

Whenever every player plays below their true potential there’s usually a good reason behind it and that reason is more often than not down to the manager. It doesn’t just happen.

A few rumours that the Chelsea owner wants him but Potter doesn’t. Would you have him at Stamford Bridge Nine?

I have a feeling the non-football aspects of this World Cup will be far more entertaining the actual football so I’d rather talk about that to be honest, and I have a feeling I am not the only one.
Unless anyone has something riveting to discuss about that block-buster of an opening game, Qatar vs Ecuador. I know why they changed it, winners are not automatically qualified anymore but it was far more interesting before as guaranteed at least one of the big nations.
I hope this World Cup is entertaining but I cannot see it happening. Not just because where it is and when, but the tournaments have become more and more boring recently. There doesn’t seem to be the big personality players anymore, the excitement, the drama. I cannot even remember who the semi-finalists where last time bar France!

Read that Qatar are “paying” people from the Indian subcontinent to act as supporters so that the event appears popular. Not sure if true but wouldn’t surprise me. Will be interesting to what size crowds attend the games and where they actually come from.
A beer has been reported to be around Β£12.50. Apparently the local Qataris are not happy with the situation and want FIFA to stop selling alcohol at the stadiums.

Southgate should play Phillips in the group stages then try and get him up to speed quickly in the easy games (and they are easy!). A mini preseason if you like.

Thought Southgate pledged to pick players playing regularly and on form? Phillips has played 53 minutes of football this season including 1 minute in the Premier League yet he is going?!

Wonderful attacking players but a very defensive coach. He will still play 5 at the back with 2 holding midfielders versus Iran π€£

Nil don’t think you can expect more from a team of kids (some making their debut) and squad players. The understanding between them all would be missing. Plus Derby rightly so kept very deep and compact making it difficult.

I did find this little snippet funny regarding the main man of DIC.
There is also a question over whether Rahid Al Maktoum would pass the Premier Leagueβs ownership test. Thatβs because he has close links to the owner of Manchester City, Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and football authorities will not want to risk any collusion, especially at the top of the Premier League. City owner Mansour is actually married to Rahid Al Maktoumβs daughter, and they both rule regions in the United Arab Emirates, ruling Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively.

Just rumours still about DIC, they’ll be plenty of them in the next few months.

Nil, agree with most of what you said but I think it should have read “FSG possibly feel they can’t take their profits any further”. I also think the Suoer League debacle was the indication they needed that they were at maximum profit already and continuing more would mean added investment with little financial gain.
Sean I also like FSG and have often championed the way they run the club despite a few well documented mistakes. But they are at the end of the day businessmen looking to make as much as they can from the club. I am concerned at who could follow if it is indeed a full sale of the club.

Chucky you’d be bidding for thr most successful club in England, not a new striker for spurs!
I like FSG despite a few major mistakes. There’s a certain group of owners that I won’t mention incase if upsetting some posters on here were in charge I would take my support elsewhere.
Apart from Roman (and we all know what a warmonger he can be when there’s a few Rubels in it for him) are there any owners that do it for the anything but their own self interest?
Worrying times…
