Wonder how Higuain will do in the PL. Sarri had him firing at Napoli, so who knows? As a loan deal it’s a move that makes a lot of sense.

Can’t disagree with SAF, Cruyff, Paisley, Sacchi and perhaps Lobanovsky and managers like that. They changed the game. And in an era where you had to rely on national talent. It took a hell of lot more back then to become and stay succesful.
Guardiola isn’t special to me. That’s just how it is. I find his short passing tiki- taka boring. I like Klopp’s style of play better.
What PG did at Barcelona what great on paper. But he inherited a team with Messi, Iniesta, Puyol, Eto’o, Xavi etc. Come on, Luis Enrique failed at both Celta and Roma, took over at Barcelona and won it all. That should tell us something.PG made Bayern less exciting to watch than under Heynckes, IMO. They went from direct and goalseeking to shortpassing tiki-taka. And fell short in the CL. Oh.. and Fulham legend Felix Magath won the German league with Bayern as well. Magath actually also won with Wolfsburg. I’d like to see PG do that.
At City he has had to compete with post- SAF United, An Arsenal in free fall compared to what they used to be, Liverpool and Spurs who can’t compete with City financially. You could perhaps even put Chelsea in that last category. Mancini and Pellegrini also won with City and struggled afterwards at less financial strong clubs.
PG hasn’t won anything in Europe since 2011. Mourinho did as late as 2016.
Guardiola is a bit like The Emperor’s New Clothes to me. Take over someone like Inter, Porto and Leicester and win stuff. Or have Liverpool and Spurs challenge on much tighter budgets like JK and MP and he might deserve to be mentioned as a great.

He was fantastic at Chelsea, but moving to Arsenal wasn’t the best of moves. It’s harder to shine with that defence in front of you.
But when he was at Chelsea, he was one of the world’s best keepers. Definitly a Chelsea and PL legend.

15th January 2019 at 9:34 am in reply to: Spectators providing support/atmosphere reflecting spirit of the club #31368I don’t think a club like Manchester City can be regarded as a big club yet. Not internationally, anyway. They haven’t really won anything in Europe as it is. And to be considered a big club in that sense, you have to have European silverware to show. I know they have the Cup winners Cup from way back in sixties or something like that, but that’s it. They never made their mark on the biggest of stages. So big clubs would be Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Milan etc.
A club like Milan may be a shadow of what it was, but it’s still considered an iconic club. Manchester City is in no way an iconic club that deserves to mentioned in the same breath as the Milans, Bayern Munichs etc of this world. There’s no denying that City is big club domestically. They’ve got the trophies in recent years to show for it. They’ve got the players. They’ve got the money. They’ve got the manager. Unless their sheik decides he’s bored and leaves, they’ll continue to be a dominating force in the PL. And it’s most likely only a matter of time before they also win the biggest of trophies in Europe, and then but only then can they call themselves a big European club. And I bet that’ll happen sooner rather than later. Good times to be a City fan, I’d say.

I hear Trump made a compromise with the democrats. They’ll place De Gea along the Mexican border instead of that wall of his.

I just read on a Danish page (who refers to The Manchester Evening NEws, I think it was) that Poch has pledged his future to Spurs by saying he would like to stay for the next 20 years. Could obviously mean nothing, and both players and managers often go back on their word, but it strengthens Levy’s position.

Mav, yes it is. I read about somewhere, and I can’t remember all the details, so I might be getting it wrong. It was something about some being aganst it, but the Italian FA wanting to do it one of the arguments being that this would be the first time women would be allowed to attend the game – but only in certain parts of the stadium and in company of a man from their family.

I’d still have the money 🙂
I just can’t imagine Levy being able to get that fee. That would be insanely good work by him.

If Levy gets that kind of money for Eriksen when the guy has so little time left of his contract, they should put up a Levy- statue in front of WHL.
Banjo, would you really do a straight swap Eriksen for Bale, Modric and Isco? Bale will be 30 in the summer and is made of glass and Modric may be world player of the year, but he’s also going to be 34 at the start of next season. He’ll not have much time left.

Ed, you run the site, so ultimately it’s your decision, but I haven’t seen a single post on this thread that has crossed any line.
My two opening posts were not rants. They were based on something that was broadcasted on national TV in Denmark. With that in mind I can’t see why we need to have a general rule that is against topics that include politics. We should be able to discuss current events related to football. Also if it includes politics.I see the need to delete a thread if it truly descents into chaos like insulting language and petty namecalling. But that ought to be a decision made from thread to thread and not as a general rule.

Thanks for the lesson in geography! Much needed, as it turns out! 😀
Perhaps it’s only a drop in the ocean, but you have to start somewhere. Who knows?

Clubs are major influencers. IMO opinion it is great that a club makes a stand and have an opinion on something like human rights and actually follow up with more than just words. Regimes like the ones in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, The Emirates, Iran, North Korea etc have medieval views on humanity. They are despotic. It’s great that a fanbase and a club say no to supporting something like that directly and/or indirectly.
The South African apartheid regime broke down partly because of pressure from the outside. Fine by me if the same happens to all dictatorships around the world.

999, mate, we’re all grown men, and I’m sure that we all, the ed included, have No problem with debating something like this. And it is a forum. And in this case football and politis are now firmly connected. We shouldn’t ignore it. Quite frankly I’m happy to see a club that makes millions each year have an opinion on something real.

999, so it’s not okay to post about a big club (regionally, anyway) when it’s something that was specifically in the news? United may be in Dubai right now. They should take notes from what Copenhagen did. It would reflect well on the club.
I see no harm in posting this. I think it’s something that fans everywhere should think about.
