Adlab, the analogy of speeding and parking is fine, although it was written a bit tongue in cheek, as speeding has dire consequences at times, but the analogy was there to show that any misdemeanour no matter how slight is picked up and dealt with….Pagan

999, it’s not Mike Riley’s job to tell refs what laws of the game they should and shouldn’t enforce. The laws are there and all should be enforced, it’s just the altering of laws suit the review system we now have is the problem…..Pagan

VAR what’s it good for (couldn’t resist that)
Well for me VAR is an overreaction to the odd refereeing mistake that happens in football, and considering the amount of decisions made in a game, which must be in the hundreds, the amount the refs get wrong is extremely low.Players in this country were generally less technical than their overseas equivalent a decade or so ago, the FA, clubs etc have spent billions on new training facilities and overhauling the way players are developed, why aren’t they doing the same for referees?
Why not make refereeing a proper profession, take those with an obvious talent at 18-20 and nurture them through the different levels of the game, from academy through youth, U21 lower league, championship, premier league.
At the moment you do your course and are then pretty much left to your own devices to learn, which is ok for kids who just want to earn some money, but there is no reL structured pathway as a profession.
So what we’ve done is create a TV culture where we overanalyse every decision a ref makes, castigate him for it, spend millions on technology and now change the laws of the game to suit the technology.
The game wasn’t broken, so don’t try and fix it, it’s taken a decade plus to start to up the quality of our players, it will take the same time to up the quality of the officials, but by then it may be too late.
No one really likes speed cameras, yes They’re there to uphold the law, so is VAR really any different….Pagan

Mr. Balance, I don’t feel aggrieved in any way, I just don’t like the way the game is going, we’re rapidly going down a road where I think technology will take the passion out of the game, but unlike most technology there will be no restore factory settings option….Pagan

Mak, it will be interesting to see if this time next year if the match going Premier league fans look at their equivalents in the championship with envy as they celebrate goals with their players whilst they sit there watching a big screen for a que to release their “canned celebrations”…..Pagan

Mr. Balance, the problem is that the game is changing, for me I think it will make the game sterile, no controversy, no spontaneity but if you want the game played black and white to the laws of the game that’s the way we’re heading, it’s not for me but others may want it that way….Pagan

The handball law change is just the tip of the iceberg, in order for VAR to work effectively it has to be used to judge matters of fact, not opinions. I expect more changes in the coming seasons, the technology is now in place, the laws will change to reflect that…..Pagan

Snakey, I apologised because, although I’m an infrequent poster due to having two kids who are very sporty and hence take up a lot of my “free” time, I do find this site a balanced discussion forum, that doesn’t have the tirade of abuse between people that is found elsewhere on the interweb, which is a credit to the regular posters on here and the way it is policed by Ed and 999, and personally I believe if you think you’ve rocked the boat or got someone’s back up on here an apology is required as collectively we need to keep this place as it is, a place where footy fans of any club can discuss and debate in a reasoned manner…..Pagan

Mak, I get your point, and to be honest I don’t hate any club, I’m quite blasé when it comes to pro football nowadays, more concerned with the teams I coach, though I don’t get into the state of mind some on here do about things that they cannot do anything about, anyway I digress.
Back to the statement, I still believe you are better than that, thinking someone is a tosser just because they hate what you like just seems a bit odd to me, although taking on board the way and manner it’s said I can see where you’re coming from.
As for Mr. Balance, I don’t believe him to be a tosser either, but he does have certain issues in regards to emotion outbursts, which I hope he can learn to address as it could in real life situations land him in serious trouble.
Anyway Mak, I seem to have got your back up, which I didn’t mean to do, saying you were better than that was meant as a positive comment towards you, if I’ve caused any offence I’m deeply sorry…..Pagan

Mak, Hightown, to be honest Mr. Balance deserves what he gets from now on, I can’t see any abuse being directed at the general Liverpool crowd by those on here, but he may get some stick directly.
Oh and Mak the comment about any one who says they hate Liverpool is a tosser is a bit like arguing a point and saying anyone who disagrees is a tosser, you’re better than a comment like that….Pagan_____________________________

Mr. Balance, DRS is used to review the decision, and is used to overrule the original decision, it’s used by the actual teams playing to challenge decisions. The umpires can also ask for help on catches, boundaries, run outs where it’s used exactly like VAR….Pagan

Chuckles, for me if you have to look at it more than once before saying I got that wrong, it’s not a clear and obvious mistake.
Every decision the ref makes changes the course of the game, the technology is now there, and as such there will be pressure to use it, welcome to the two hour game….Pagan

Mr. Balance, not used to overrule decisions in cricket???. Have you ever watched a game of cricket, DRS is there solely for that purpose……Pagan

Chuckles, although it doesn’t really bother me what Mr. Balance says, it’s his duplicity, anyone mentions anything slightly negative about Liverpool and he wants his own safe space Liverpool only page, but he thinks he can say what he likes as long as he says sorry the next day. Well now it’s open season next time he starts…..Pagan

Mak, and that’s the problem using video replays for matters of opinion rather than just matters of fact. For me cricket uses video most effectively with the aid of ball tracking and ultra edge, the only contentious decisions you really get are catches where the ball may have grounded…..Pagan

Mr. Balance, I’ve stuck up for you in the past, but unfortunately I won’t anymore. That was the most insincere apology I’ve seen for a long time, no remorse, just hide behind the “I’m passionate” excuse yet again.
When Liverpool lose, you do realise that you will probably cop a load of stick on here, and I would be surprised if any fellow Pool fans come to your defence after besmirching there good name and reputation…..Pagan_____________________________

Adlab, as I said earlier, female refs can be really good, shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone as we all know that women are very good at pointing out the things that men do wrong???…..Pagan

Mikus, although I agree with you regarding free to air matches, and Adlab, most of us would love to be on ÂŁ200k a year let alone a week, the only problem is the broadcasters are then giving away something that others are paying for, which isn’t really fair on them, especially pubs who pay an awful lot of money in order to recoup it through beer sales…Pagan
