Mak, I think footballers are overpaid pri maddonas who have a self importance beyond belief, it’s not as if they were expected to jump of the plane and play a match. For me a true professional takes adversity in their stride and overcomes it, uses it in a positive manner.
Yes the Irish FA were probably not up to scratch in comparison to other FAs, but that’s the way it is, They don’t have the same resources as England, that’s why the The talented Irish players go to England. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise to him….Pagan

Mak, from what I remember of the 2002 incident, Keane didn’t like the fact that the FIA officials had the best seats on the plane and the fact they had to go through the airport checks like joe public has to. Absolutely no justification for a moan there at all.
He did however have a point that the training facilities they went to were substandard.
There are ways though of making a point, stamping your feet, spitting your dummy out and going home wasn’t probably the best way to do it…..Pagan

Lucky, cricket uses the ratio of runs for and runs against, but then they can’t use run difference due to the fact that unlike football, grounds can be vastly different sizes and hence have higher run totals.
Good thread, enjoyed it….Pagan

Lucky, yep got that, but if we were to use proper goal average that would be the number of goals divided by the number of matches played (mean as opposed to mode or median) rather than goals scored divided by goals conceded, the ratio of the two, that could make for more exciting games…Pagan

We use to have goal average, we’ve now got goal difference, and we’re now talking about goal ratio.
If you want all out exciting attacking football then goal average is the way to go as a 5-4 victory is better for the winning team than a 4-0 victory.

Lucky, that means all teams have a 0% win rate against them not just the average opponent. We can go round in circles with maths. Let’s face it, what makes footy so good is it’s played on grass not paper, an undefeated team can get relegated on 38 points, that would be harsh but possible on the system we have now….Pagan

Lucky, so you have to manipulate a system to make it work (even though it’s highly improbable) which team does the one goal go to, and it would also make that team at least 38 times better than most teams in the league, which is quite frankly equally improbable. Yep I realise the scenario is highly unlikely, but….however it’s an interesting discussion point…..Pagan

Lucky, so using your formula a team that wins all of it’s 38 matches 1-0 would have a ranking of ???…..Pagan

Mr. Balance, We Need To Talk About Kevin, is a book and a film, so I presume it was just a play on that.
Chuckles, yep totally tongue in cheek, like you, I have absolutely no interest in reading a book about someone who thinks he is somehow entitled to be worshipped due to his ability to chase a bag of wind round a field…..Pagan

Chuckles, I really think you need to read a few of them, they’re a great insight into the hardships these players have to put up with, the difficult decisions they take in deciding which extortionate signing on fee to take, the Stress involved in choosing which one of their exotic sports cars they should go to work in, the constant pressure they’re under to be seen in all the right places, things us mere mortals would buckle under the strain with. I suggest you read a few and empathise with them….Pagan

Personally I’d like to see teams tied on points to be separated by how they performed head to head in the first instance….Pagan

So if we were to implement this it would encourage teams to go out to annihilate the weaker opposition, this will force all teams to play their strongest team at all times, so where is the opportunity for the younger players to be introduced when games are comfortable, answer it goes, we’ve had pages and pages on here about youth development this idea would be another nail in the coffin….Pagan

3rd September 2019 at 1:24 pm in reply to: Week 4: Because I\'m still bored (and annoyed about the cricket) #46976“I disagree with you about Grealish. I reckon he was moving at pace, got a little shove in the back which when you’re moving at pace like he was can make you lose your balance”
The above needs the caveat that if you’re holding an ovoid ball at the time rather than chasing a spherical one the above doesn’t apply…..Pagan

Isms are a big problem made worse by social media, people used to sit at home watching footy and the like and in a fit of rage they would say or think to themselves unpleasant things, things that they don’t necessarily believe and in a more rational state of mind wouldn’t say and in the cold light of day would be deeply ashamed in doing so, now however they post it online, and once done there’s no going back, not sure quite how you stop that.
Obviously there are the minority who are racist, homophobic etc, and at matches and in general life it’s up to society in general to make it unacceptable ….Pagan
