Jacksonian, it’s very naive to think the size of the stadium has much of an effect on your finances, it’s all about global fan base. Man United have a massive fan base and just because they’re going through a sticky patch that won’t change, it’s about loyalty, look at Liverpool, they’ve not been a dominant force for years, but the fan base they developed when they were has stuck by them and increased by supporter inheritance.
FFP, was brought in under the guise of financial stability, but really it’s there to keep the big clubs big and the smaller clubs in their place, the establishment don’t want another Chelsea or Man City joining the top table…..Pagan

9,
David Coote was the VAR in the Chelsea Spurs game who was vastly less experienced than match Referee Michael Oliver.
I would say David Coote in refereeing terms is vastly more experienced than the majority of those that watched the game, yet everyone else knew it was a red card offence.
The Wenger plan will still have the same problem, the only difference is you now have 3 lines to see if there’s a toe over. Just go with the lino unless it’s glaringly obvious he or she has got it wrong…..Pagan

If you try and think of the absolute howlers from the past, the Spurs “goal” against Man United, Lampard “goal” against the Germans spring to mind, but we’ve fixed that with goal line technology, there’s the hand of god goal, but other than that nothing really rankles with me.
I sure others out there will have more examples, but over this season so far how many actual howlers have been corrected compared to the things you’d accept the officials would never see in real time, in essence how many times has it done what it’s really there for….Pagan

Sean, because it’s not being used for what it’s meant to be used for. Irrespective of whether it’s the ref or the 5th official, they should look at an incident from a couple of angles and either be happy with the decision made at the time or not. Instead they micro analyse in order to justify the technology. The technology is there so when the refs sat at home after the match he doesn’t beat himself up knowing he’s made a glaring error, instead it’s being used pedantically for every incident…..Pagan

Sean, the original call for technology to help the on field ref was to stop the howlers being missed, trouble is they’re using it to micro analyse incidents you’d never get 100% right at normal speed with the human eye and most fans would accept that you win some, lose some, but still missing the errors that are blatantly obvious to everyone except the one person that matters.
Pitch side monitor or VR goggles is the way to go for me, let the ref self critique…..Pagan

23rd February 2020 at 4:13 pm in reply to: Week 27: Turn it on at HT and turn it right off again… #73896Yes Mav, there are, but there’s only really 3 teams in it and a Man City win would have given them a very slight advantage. As it is Man City top the table by 1 point from Chelsea and 4 points from Arsenal who both have a game in hand….Pagan

9, that was more like the performances he put in at Derby, really hard working closing the opposition down quickly, that seemed to have dropped off from the start of the season….Pagan

21st February 2020 at 8:00 am in reply to: Barcelona complete controversial Braithwaite signing #73138If you take a step back, the rule was probably put in to help the smaller clubs who have smaller squads and would be more affected by a long term injury, however the rules have to apply to all clubs in the league equally and as such the bigger clubs can take advantage of it……..Pagan

Paxton, surely the bar has been set for financial irregularities, 12 point deduction for the next season, £600k fine and excluded from the next FA Cup.
But if you appeal it’s just a £1.5m fine…….Pagan

Firstly this is a UEFA, if the PL want to have their own case then it will have to be a totally separate case.
If they do this and Man City were to be found guilty then the punishment would be one going forward and not retrospectively giving titles to others. The league is not a one of event, and as such the governing body would have to remove Man City’s results from the seasons concerned, in effect making it a 19 team league. Personally I don’t think they will go down that road as it could have so many consequences, depending on how it would effect the seasons concerned final table. The obvious one is league winner, then different teams would have qualified for European competitions, it may have affected who got relegated and as money is paid out on finishing position then some teams will be owed and some owe, the law suits would be tremendous…..Pagan
