9, academies aren’t grass roots by definition, if you’re in an academy you can’t play grass roots.
As for the FA Cup, are only the PL in it? put to the vote of all the clubs in it and see what happens.
So Chelsea have spunked £200+m during a pandemic, they’ll post a loss over the next couple of seasons and blame it on COVID….Pagan

9, and there’s the problem in a nutshell, the teams have more power than the governing bodies. Deep down the big teams know that they can do what they want because they hold the power, the whole game from kids grass roots upwards is controlled by 4 to 6 clubs who bleed it for all they can but put nothing back in…..Pagan

9, don’t fall for the “we play too many games” clap trap, it’s more we don’t want to play games that don’t pay when we could be playing those that do….Pagan

Mak, regarding the cups, league cup, make it optional or a reserve cup for clubs in Europe, FA cup, all teams in from the first round proper, spread a bit of wealth and glamour round the lower leagues….Pagan

Brian, I have no problem with ODIs and T20 cricket. Not sure where the 100 fits in, though it will be a bit more tactical than T20. Currently the IPA is on, it’s the big money T20 competition, and it’s been a really good watch so far.
The problem with the 5 day game is being able to go and watch it as 3 days of it have to be during the traditional working week, and no matter how you schedule it you can’t guarantee the finish being at the weekend.
I think you have to take the view that ODIs and T20 are the champions league and FA cup and the 5 day game as the league competition. You also have to have the shorter formats for the amateur and junior game….Pagan

Worryingly for me, America is starting to take a big interest in cricket, with them having ambitions to be in the top league by 2030, unfortunately for cricket they don’t have the money to resist Americanisation should it take off in the good old US of A….Pagan

Adlab, they can’t play as many games as they do at the moment because it’s so tiring for the players, however you can play more games with more travelling in the proposed format with no ill effects as you get paid more…..Pagan

9, In the hierarchy of things the PL answer to The FA, The FA to UEFA, does not UEFA then answer to FIFA?
The top 6 teams will still play domestic football, they’ll still need that revenue. What makes English footy so good (and marketable) is the game atmosphere, and that’s due to England being small enough for travelling fans to attend away games, that travelling and atmosphere becomes a habit and is continued into the European games, lose the domestic footy and you lose the atmosphere, then English footy loses its marketability and the money that goes with it….Pagan

Adlab, the Super League runs parallel to the Prem and takes the place of the CL.
So less money to share between the proposed 18 Prem sides as they give more away.
No League cup.
More European games and money for the Judas 5 or 6

Very interesting, so “The Big Picture” was sold as all about giving more of the PL money to lower leagues, whilst at the same time they were plotting to get massive amounts of money from another revenue stream. Talk about a them and us organisation….Pagan

Threeps, I would think you can’t have foul play when the ball isn’t in play, therefore if the ref thought it was a genuine attempt to win the ball then he would have needed to judge it as violent conduct to take further action. The only conclusion you can come to is he didn’t deem it so.
I’m still not sure had there been no offside if it was a sending off offence as the double jeopardy rule may have come into play…..Pagan

Mak, these are the laws that cover the Pickford challenge.
Law 12
Direct and indirect free kicks and penalty kicks can only be awarded for offences committed when the ball is in play.
Direct free kick
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:Law 9
Ball out of play
The ball is out of play when:
it has wholly passed over the goal line or touchline on the ground or in the air
play has been stopped by the referee
it touches a match official, remains on the field of play and:
a team starts a promising attack or
the ball goes directly into the goal or
the team in possession of the ball changesFree kicks/penalties can only be given when the ball is in play, the ball wasn’t in play as VAR deemed it offside and as such no foul, no free kick/penalty.

Mak, the lines are drawn correctly as they see it, the line may look in the wrong position, but the camera angle isn’t in line with play and may seem to show the elbow. whether the system is accurate enough is one debate, and whether it should be used for that sort of minute detail is another, however they’ve used it to that degree all last season so that’s where we are.
For me the goal should have stood as there’s no way you could reasonably expect the decision to be given either way by the naked eye, add to that both the ref and assistant thought it was ok. That said it’s unfortunately no different to the many others that have been ruled out previously.
Serious foul play only comes into play when the ball is in play, which it wasn’t as the game effectively stopped with the offside. I personally don’t think it was violent conduct so that couldn’t be used…..Pagan

Nil, as you are well aware, Leicester has had and still does have tighter restrictions than other parts of the country, you’ve had those for nigh on 3 months now, other parts of the country are now getting similar and higher restrictions, these, going by the precedent being set by the like of the Leicester situation would make the likelihood of a return of fans to football highly unlikely any time soon, even if only home fans were allowed, the movement round the country of individuals would be vast….Pagan

Yep, but MOTD takes the VAR feed from Stockley Park, that shows the Red line was closer to the goal line than the blue one, therefore offside. Is the system accurate enough to be that exact, I don’t think it is, frame rates, the best guess when the ball is played forward and the tolerances of how the lines are drawn perpendicular to the touch lines in order to alleviate parallax error and how accurate the lines can be draw vertically perpendicular to the playing surface to show if a part of the body is in front of another player all make the precision of how it’s being used questionable.
The lines drawn on screen use all of the above, however the picture is taken from a camera that isn’t necessarily in line with play, that means that the picture is subject to parallax error whereas the lines aren’t.
On top of that if two players were to stand on the 18 yard line, one on each corner they wouldn’t necessarily be in line as I can’t see the lines being marked out as accurately as VAR is supposed to be…..Pagan

Sean, the lines show it was offside, I argued against all the decisions of a similar ilk last season and consistently was told by posters on here that offside was a black and white decision.
Technology is being used to make the decisions rather than an aid to make sure there wasn’t a clear and obvious error. I don’t like it and my interest in the game has seriously waned. I watch a lot of cricket and their use of technology is far better, if there’s a review then the umpire makes a soft call, unless the reviews conclusively prove otherwise then the refs decision stands. If the same system had been used yesterday, the ref would have asked the assistant what they saw and made a soft call on it, the review would have shown the position of the players and as it was so close it would have been given as the refs call, as the assistant didn’t flag I would presume the soft call would have been onside. Going back to cricket to show how that works for those that don’t watch the game, in a LBW decisions even if the review shows the ball would have hit the stumps, if it was only a glancing blow, if the umpire has given not out then his decision stands, the umpire is only overruled if it’s clear and obvious.
Football had the opportunity to converse with other sports to see how they use the technology available, it would seem the arrogance of those at the top stopped that being done and we are now stuck, for this season again, with a system that is not being used how it should be……Pagan

Nil, VAR is here to stay, you were a great advocate of it, these types of decisions happened all the way through last season, and will continue to happen whilst it’s used to micro analyse all decisions, be it offside, hand ball etc. We can’t change the rules mid season so we’re stuck with it yet again.
My only stance on offside is possibly going for daylight between the two players, with the laws staying as they are. If there’s going to be an argument whether or not you can see daylight or not then the player is clearly offside to start with…..Pagan
