Having Watched MOTD the Salah incident was never a penalty for me, no blame towards Salah, but we’re moving towards a non contact game, a slight touch on the bottom of his foot and he throws himself to the ground and rolls around holding his ankle, the ref again can only give what he sees and give a penalty, then VAR steps in, that’s when it goes wrong, the call from VAR should have been, minimal contact, not enough to go down, go and have a look at the monitor.
As I say we’re now moving towards a non contact sport, If we keep rewarding exaggeration in the game then the players will keep pushing the boundaries. Once again no slight on Salah or the ref, just a general moan on the direction the game is going in…..Pagan

9, glad to hear you’re following what your consultant advises, however it’s not that easy for the government, they have experts in disease, mental Heath, the economy etc. all giving advice in their field of expertise, all probably contradicting each other. Not really sure anyone has got anywhere near getting it right in a country like the UK…Pagan

Whilst the car is a big factor in F1, the driver plays a huge part, they’re involved in the development and in the race setup. During the race nowadays it’s all about speed v tyre wear, in past generations where you ran flat out all the time it was speed v reliability, in both cases a lot of it is down to smoothness of the driver. Then of course you have the real leveller, rain, the great drivers excel in it…..Pagan

Hamilton is a fabulous driver in F1 as it stands now. Would love to see how good he would be if they were allowed to race flat out all the time, rather than how it is now with fuel and tire limits.
Schumacher’s record looked untouchable when it was set, but Hamilton has beaten it and may yet absolutely smash it.
He’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but talent wise he’s up there to be compared with others from generations past….Pagan

9, that’s the old chestnut, or as we would call it the “Chelsea Conundrum” you have a squad and a youth set up, the youth should be there for backup and emergencies, no point having them if you are going to buy in instead.
Chelsea did it to Lukaku, whereas Spurs gave Kane a chance….Pagan

Brian, the game has had to evolve for the “right now” generation, and to be honest it can be really entertaining and a good evening out.
Similar things were said about European Football in 1955 when Chelsea were stopped from entering the European Cup as it wouldn’t catch on…..Pagan

Unfortunately cricket needs T20 to survive, back in the good old days players played cricket in the summer and then had to get a proper job in the winter. There’s no money to be made from the 5 day game, so in order to be able to fully employ the players throughout the year then they need to make money.
The spin off has obviously been the T20 franchise’s, where the top players in the world are able to follow the summer round the globe and are handsomely rewarded doing so…Pagan

In regards to the Maguire incident, yes it was a clear penalty, my only concern is that holding in the area at set pieces becomes the next hot topic for VAR…..Pagan

9, I was more alluding to the fact that if you watch a PPV game then you may not then watch the scheduled TV game and audience figures are what the advertisers look at, and if these start to drop they’re not going to be best pleased…..Pagan

9, I think the broadcasters realise we’re at saturation point already, people will only watch so much and a drop in viewing figures for their exclusive games may make those paying for advertisements question the fees….Pagan

9, of course they don’t want to promote the PPV games against their own packages, if they’re doing PPV for cost as you’ve said previously, where’s the incentive to?….Pagan

Sean, that’s the problem with a review system, in order for it to be used impartially you can’t pick a choose when you apply it as that can be interpreted as bias. Yes there is far to much holding that goes on but I hope we don’t go down the VAR route to eliminate it as that would be another nail in the game as a spectacle…..Pagan

9, be careful what you wish for, there is no law that says you can’t grab a player round the neck. Would you still be calling for a penalty if Maguire had held him round the waist?
I’m happy the ref missed it and it didn’t get reviewed, if we go down that road it will be the same as offside where every ball into the box is micro analysed, every set piece into the area will either be a free kick or a penalty…..Pagan

Nil,
Salah offside, in real time with the naked eye, you’d be hard to call that either way with any degree of certainty, by VAR standards that was miles offside, was it a clear and obvious error, would you expect the assistant to get that decision right with certainty, the answer is no, so I’d have no complaints if the goal was given.
The penalty, the forwards foot was on the line, so that counts as in the box, was there contact yes, by the absolute letter of the law you can give a penalty, in the real world was it a penalty, I don’t think so.
Have Liverpool been treated harshly, no I don’t think so, it’s just how it is now in the VAR world…..Pagan

Well, the penalty in the Liverpool sums up the use of VAR in the Premier League. We now have someone sat remote from the game with a copy of the laws of the game and a desire to show what the system can see when used to its maximum potential. In the incident itself there was contact and it was on the line, so you can point to the laws of the game and shout penalty, was it a clear and obvious miss by the ref, no. Should have been a penalty, no. Would there have been a great deal of debate after the game had it not been given, no. Is VAR ruining the game, yes.
In short we now have a system that is being used to its maximum potential, to micro analyse incidents in order to justify its existence rather than an as a safety net to stop glaring errors by the officials…..Pagan
