Lucky, there’s the confusion, it’s not if you touch the ball with your arm, it’s if there’s contact between the ball and the arm, it’s a yes or no decision that has been implemented so VAR can work….Pagan

To be honest I don’t think he controlled the ball with his arm, it brushed off it as it hit his chest, but them’s the laws of the game and the ref looked at the monitor and had no choice but to give it. It’s not the refs fault or VAR, it’s the current handball law….Pagan

Mak, totally agree, but the reward could be 3 points against a £10 admin fee for a yellow card….Pagan

Mak, they’re trained and encouraged to do it, currently the rewards for it outweigh the punishment if you get caught…..Pagan

Mak, name a team that doesn’t have players that get a slight touch and fall to the ground in agony.
It’s a shameful trait, and unfortunately they get rewarded for it, VAR was meant to sort it out, unfortunately it’s made it worse as it not consistent…..Pagan

Adlab, you need to have many talents to make it in sport, obviously there’s the physical side, then you have coordination, special awareness, the ability to learn, self discipline, work ethic, drive, self belief, resilience to name but a few. If you have some of these and you play football as a young kid you will get spotted, if you have all the above and more you may make it, however you also have to have very dedicated parents…..Pagan

9, my point was, the championship and below have been allowed to use up to 5 substitutes since the 2017/2018 season but have decided not to, the top leagues in each country have not been able to until IFAB/FIFA allowed a slight relaxation of law 3 for the end of last season and for this one…Pagan

9, Law 3 has only been relaxed for the top league in any given country, the laws of the game already allowed lower leagues to use 5 subs if their competition rules say so. The reason IFAB/FIFA prescribe what the top leagues and international teams can do is to get consistency across the teams that are likely to meet each other. It’s always been an anomaly that the teams limited to fewer substitutions would probably be the ones that play most matches…..Pagan

9, the laws of the game are the laws, championship (not the top domestic league) has been allowed to use 5 if they so wish since the law changed, they chose not to, but have now taken that option. The Prem and international are restricted to 3. If FIFA let the top leagues use 5 then that’s a temporary change to the laws…..Pagan

9, the laws of the game for substitutes is below, it seems that only the top league and internationals are limited to 3, other leagues are permitted up to 5, so I presume that the PL would have to run it by FIFA for approval should the League vote for it……Pagan
Number of substitutions
The number of substitutes, up to a maximum of five, which may be used in any match played in an official competition will be determined by FIFA,the confederation or the national football association except for men’s and women’s competitions involving the 1st teams of clubs in the top division or senior ‘A’ international teams, where the maximum is three substitutes.Official competitions
The competition rules must state:
• how many substitutes may be named, from three to a maximum of twelve • whether one additional substitute may be used when a match goes into extra time (whether or not the team has already used the full number of permitted
substitutes)_____________________________

Brian, 30 years ago we didn’t have screens of stats or even an assists category, these came with the TV coverage and I believe were based on American TV sports coverage. Season tickets saved you money and included cup games, now they just reserve your seat.
Talking is statistics I remember Brian Clough being asked if he thought he’d have been a better manager if he’d had a system like ProZone to analyse players, he said “we did, we called it our eyes”…..Pagan

9, those two examples are to show that the laws of the game can be modified by competition rules. Although the 5 subs currently isn’t an Americanisation, if they were changed to roll in roll off as it is in the lower tiers of football then we may see offensive and defensive setups. The drinks breaks I can see being adopted as it gives the coaches chance to reorganise and obviously gives the broadcasters two additional add breaks…..Pagan

9, I don’t think that the PL has to be taken over by the Americans to become Americanised, I think we’re looking at how it will change to become more exploited for revenue.
The laws of the game state 3 subs, but we’ve already seen that amended by the PL last season.
The laws say that the game must be played in two equal halves, but we’ve also seen that worked round to incorporate drinks breaks. I would say somewhere along the lines there will be laws of the game with a caveat for rules of a competition inserted such as number of subs etc…..Pagan

9, Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas, that’s only true if they’re earmarked for dinner, but with Americanisation the Turkeys are not only off the menu, they’re getting a bigger present.
I would think that the laws of the game will remain fairly constant across the globe, but rules for competitions may change if the rewards are there….Pagan

9, No, it’s as easy to keep them both in a bubble, whether it’s approx 3 months for the IPL (not 6 weeks) or 9 months for the Pl, once they’re in the bubble it’s easy to maintain. Whether you could voluntarily incarcerate players for that time is another discussion.
The thing is that what they’re doing now is having little to no effect, so why bother…..Pagan

The general consensus is that Derby are spending £1.33 for every £1 they turn over, hence why they had to sell their stadium, although they are quite well supported locally they don’t have a wide fan base so quite how they turn that round is anyone’s guess…..Pagan

9, I would seriously check your figures “Just for the sake of accuracy Pagan it wasn’t 50 out of 2,000 it was 48 out 14,250.” Are you telling me there’s 14,250 players in the premier league? There may have been 14,250 tests conducted but the set size is only circa 2000……Pagan

Your stats are apples and oranges, you only get a test if you’re showing symptoms in the real world, footballers are getting tested as a matter of course.
50 positive tests out of 2000 is a far percentage when it’s matter of course as opposed to with symptoms.
Extrapolate the figures and it’s pretty close the UK figures. I’m not saying go down the IPL system, even though it works, I’m just saying what they’re doing is making little if any difference….Pagan

Nil, I’ve not had a day off since March, think being stuck at home would have done my head in. As a family we’ve been fortunate, both me and the Mrs have continued to work, my lad was furloughed but is now back full time and my daughter is still at school. The only real downer about this latest lockdown is the youngest was invited to train with an England squad, but unfortunately that’s had to go on the back burner….Pagan

9, you’ve missed the whole point you seem to cut and paste figures without digging into them, the IPL had 0 cases but it was an awful lot sacrifice made by all concerned, the Prem is allegedly spending a fortune and has a lot of protocols, yet are no better than the general public, so why are they bothering. For me it’s one or the other, but if you think spending a fortune to achieve nothing is the way to go, crack on.
I just don’t see why they bother, their personal lives will be where they pick it up and if that’s not controlled then all the effort the clubs go to is wasted…..Pagan
