Nil, it’s swings and roundabouts with kick off times, over Christmas some teams get a 48 hours turnaround, others have 72, that’s what it is and managers have to plan accordingly and then react to any injuries…..Pagan

Sean, I’ve just watched MOTD, that shows exactly how the lines are put on, it’s almost like a cross hair put onto the body point nearest the goal when they judge the ball is played forward.
For me all 3 contentious decisions by the letter of the law were eventually given correctly by the evidence presented by VAR, however in real time, with match officials making the decisions they could have gone either way and I’d be happy with whatever they’d given. Theres absolutely no way in real time the assistant referee could have been 100% sure the Liverpool players were offside or not in either chalked off goal so he’d have to let them stand. The penalty, the ref in real time didn’t give and I think that what happened is all part of the game, if he had of given it we’d be saying that’s a bit harsh but we’ve seen them given before.
The only way to explain how VAR is being used is to imagine there’s a really nerdy, pedantic person, who’s never seen the game played sat in a room with a copy of the laws of the game making decisions on single frame of the action……Pagan
I think we’re getting to the stage where we get rid of the Assistant Referees and just have line judges to see if the ball remains in play as it seems that’s really the only decision they’re now allowed to make……Pagan

Mak, that’s the problem, once it goes to VAR it goes to a yes or no decision according to the laws of the game, in this case was there contact, there’s no leeway given and no understanding that football is a contact sport…..Pagan

Sean, the lines are drawn perpendicular to the touch lines by computer, the VAR operator will pinpoint the point on the body closest to the goal when he thinks the ball is played forwards and technology will do the rest.
My problem with all of this is it was asked for to sort out the howlers, it was sold to everyone as such and now it’s being used forensically in order to justify itself as we’ve now proved that the actual officials were that bad after all.
Another anomaly is the fact that European games don’t seem to have the same issues the Premier league has, they seem to have a quick look and if they can’t see anything clear and obvious first look then play goes on, the Premier League seem to want to micro analyse it, whether that’s driven by our broadcasters who have always tried to find fault with officials I don’t know as I’ve never really watched broadcasts from overseas TV.
VAR is not mandated by IFAB, it’s a system that’s approved by them to use if a league so wishes, the Premier League chose to use it and at the end of the season could choose not to for next season……Pagan

Sean, I’m not sure how accurate the lines are, but I would think they would be pretty accurate, that’s the easy part to be honest. I would suggest that the pictures we actually see could be a bit misleading due to parallax error with the cameras not being inline with play, but as I say I would think pretty accurate.
My concern is the frame rate and that it’s only a best guess when the ball moves forward. There’s so many things moving at the same time that no matter how accurate the lines are it’s not possible to freeze the action at exactly the right moment.
I don’t like VAR, but with the evidence it presents all decisions that have been made using it have been correct, the questions for me are, is the evidence accurate enough, and should the events it investigates actually be investigated. VAR should only be used to correct absolute howlers, not for the ridiculous things it does now…..Pagan

9, why not. For me I’d like to see us have a go at buying Wilson from Liverpool, he was fantastic at Derby when he played with Mount, he had a dip when Mount was injured but was back on form when he returned. If we could get him at a realistic price I think it would be a gamble worth taking….Pagan

Nil, Henderson’s goal was correctly chalked off using the technology we currently have, used in the manner that is prescribed. Like it or not, you wanted VAR and supported it 12 months ago, now you’re going through what most other teams went through last season you don’t like it, well welcome to our world, it’s not good but it’s all we’ve got….Pagan

Nil, the decisions last season were exactly the same as those this season, fortunately for Liverpool they didn’t suffer from any, hence they got dubbed LiVARpool by some, this season they’re getting their fair share and they’re now going through what most clubs fans went through 12 months ago. It was rubbish then and it’s equally rubbish now…..Pagan

Nil, so why was he given offside? The lines were drawn and that’s what they showed, you have understand that the lines are drawn perpendicular to the touch lines, the freeze frame you see isn’t in line and so the lines can seem to be closer than they actually are.
Don’t forget I’m anti VAR, I’m just saying how it works….Pagan_____________________________

Mikus, that’s an interesting take on cheating a culture. In some cultures playing fair is promoted, in others it’s anything goes and it’s up to the officials to spot it. Yes I suppose that’s why England aren’t serial winners, you only need to look on this forum, when Jose wins by negative tactics, it’s anti football, it’s only good to win if you win with style…..Pagan

Nil, Var proved Henderson was offside by the laws of the game, the only doubt is whether the system is accurate enough for measurement that fine…..Pagan

Nil, I think you mean if there’s any doubt then the advantage should be given to the attacker. VAR if you believe in it’s accuracy is removing that doubt…..Pagan

Mikus, the ref made his judgment allowing for discretion originally, he’s then asked (well basically told) to review it (change his mind]…..Pagan

They have the chance to review their decisions, but they have to apply the laws of the game to what they see. I’ve yet to see a review when the laws haven’t been adhered to, and there lies the problem, the laws were written for a referee to implement as the game is being played, not for VAR to analyse from multiple angles over 2 to 4 minutes whilst the game is paused…..Pagan

Mikus, it’s not that easy, refs have to apply the laws of the game, without VAR they make their decisions on what they saw (or didn’t), with VAR they either have to take the off field decision or review it themselves, if the off field decision or the pictures clearly show something different then they have to go by it…..Pagan

VAR is a system approved by the sport’s governing bodies, however its use has not been mandated, the Premier League has opted to use it, it also still has the option to not use it, obviously they have to use it for the rest of the season, but they could scrap it for next……Pagan

We realise that having fans in a ground creates an atmosphere, this atmosphere can influence a ref and can motivate a team, so is it really fair that only certain clubs will have fans in…..Pagan

Mak, if I remember, you were for VAR as you wanted a game with no mistakes, I was against it, as the mistakes were the talking points and I didn’t want to lose them.
What we had in broadly in common was the definition of mistakes, I don’t think anyone anywhere foresaw the way it would actually be implemented……Pagan
