Why do we need VAR when a penalty is taken? The assistant has one job, let him do it…..Pagan

As I’ve said before, we’re using modern technology to enforce the laws of the game that were meant to be overseen with common sense and the human eye.
I’ve been trying to think of another sport that would really suffer if micro analysis was brought in, the only one that springs to mind is race walking. Now the urban myth is that in order to be classed as walking one foot must always be in contact with the ground, this isn’t in fact the case, the actual rule is at any time one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground, this makes it a human eye judgement and is not enforced by video.
Maybe this is the way to go for offside, even with VAR, a freeze frame, no lines and if it’s not obviously off side then it’s onside…..Pagan

There’s a moment in the original Jurassic Park film when Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, says emphatically, “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
Think that sums up VAR…..Pagan

I’ve had a bit of a think about VAR and why we’re having the problems, for me we have to step back about 100 years or so.
The laws of the game were written and modified for an organic game, where the officials took into consideration the conditions and dynamics of the game. His job was to make sure the game was played in his opinion within the laws of the game and not to let it get out of hand.
Fast forward to now, we’ve had a few minor changes to the laws of the game I’ve the last 20 years or so but the laws of the game have remained pretty much the same. We now have VAR and we seem at least in the Premier League, to have a myriad of problems, this to me seems to be because we have taken the organic officiating out of the game and tried to make the laws of game prescriptive instead. If this hasn’t been possible as in the case of handball we’ve changed the laws of the game.
For me this it’s where it’s gone wrong, instead of changing the laws of the game the authorities should have written how VAR should be used within the spirit of the game sticking to how the laws of the game were written to allow a free flowing game adapted to the conditions and tempo of each individual game. Yes we’ll still get a bit of inconsistency, but hopefully it removes the very obvious mistakes and we live with the odd dubious decisions…..Pagan

Mikus, to be fair to both of them they both pulled out, if it were cricket and the Wolves did as he did and didn’t say it was no penalty, then there would be a great deal of tutting going on….Pagan

I’ve had a watch of MOTD2 and seen the “penalty” incident, there is no doubt that VAR correctly changed the decision. What I did notice is no one appealed for a penalty, and I think players on both sides were a little surprised……Pagan

I’ve not seen the incident, but I don’t think VAR can be used on yellow card incidents, hence no yellow card, for me though if it was a definite dive it should be a straight red, only way to stamp it out…..Pagan

Mak, weight loss is a ratio, calories in v calories out. The big bonus of not putting 90-95% of the emphasis on diet is exercise is not only good for you physically it’s also good for you mentally…..Pagan

Well I watched Chelsea v West Ham in the WSL, no VAR, no diving, no play acting, and a really good game, Chelsea won 3-1 with a Sam Kerr hat trick…Pagan

Nil, if it’s weight your trying to lose, brisk walking and a change of diet is the best way to go, and you’ll get to see a different side if the area you live in…..Pagan

I’d love to 9, but unfortunately I’m not allowed to make a decision of that magnitude without a favourable review from Stockley Park…..Pagan

Sean, I get where you’re coming from, but should they just keep on giving things that are clearly wrong……Pagan

Sean, by the laws of the game it’s no penalty as it didn’t interfere with active play, it’s the others that need looking at, I don’t think anyone can look at any of the recent incidents and not agree that the players threw themselves to the ground. I’m not sure how we’ve got to the state of play we’re at now where any contact in a contact sport is deemed foul play. Maybe put some grass root players in Stockley Park to assist the so called experts…..Pagan

Interferes with active play, in other words the force of the illegal contact makes the players stumble or fall, that’s far different from feeling a slight bit of contact and throwing yourself to the ground. In my opinion none of the last few penalties should have been so, what we’re seeing is the start of a one way trip to a non contact sport, the decision on what is and isn’t a foul has to be taken now before it’s too late…..Pagan

Nil, it’s no good having millions of doses of the vaccine if you can’t store, move and administer it. Inoculating a population of 64 million plus is going to take some organising especially if they need two doses and it has to be transported and stored at way below freezing…..Pagan
