NB, if it was all about dominating in your chosen sport, it would have been named the Phil Taylor trophy. Personally I think it needs renaming to sports person, as personality does at times seem to be lacking…..Pagan

CM, great teams find ways to win, they work out the weaknesses of the teams they play and capitalise on them, great players are the ones that make the best descisions most of the time. Currently that’s City, but any of the great teams you mention would be able to compete today, as they would find a way to win…..Pagan

First there was Man Utd and Arsenal, then briefly Blackburn came to play, then Chelsea joined in. So there were 3 with a big gap to anyone else. Now we have 6+ teams with very little gap to the rest, points are now more easily dropped. I don’t think the chasing teams are far off what they’ve been in the past in general, it’s just Man City have made a step change rather than a slow evolution and have opened up a bit of a gap. I would say this, team this season is probably the best we’ve ever seen, can they keep that lead in the coming seasons or will the rest step up to the plate….Pagan

BB I would rather see non footballers reviewing dives and exaggerations, I look at the amount of contact some players go down with and thinking embarrassing, stamp out the “there was contact so he has a right to go down” rubbish and ridicule them in the media, I think their pride needs hitting more than their wallets…..Pagan

NB, to be fair it’s already happened, the Tevez and Mascherano (spelling?) saga where West Ham had to pay compensation, with the money now involved in the game there could be some hefty claims put in.
I think maybe the 4th official as you say needs to have a bit more involvement

Regarding managers comments and the questions they’re asked, it’s what the interviewers job is, controversy is what puts bums on seats, and the money paid for those seats goes to Sky and BT. Obviously some managers buttons are easier to push than others….Pagan

NB, what I was getting at is the wronged team may lose a game due to a dive and penalty against them, then the next week another team plays against a the said team who are in fact weakened as they have a player suspended, and get a result that keeps them up and relegates the wronged team from the week before. That doesn’t sit right with me, so I’m nor really a fan of retrospective action, and as I said I’m also not a fan of stoppage in play to keep reviewing things. To be honest I like it the way it is, some you win, some you lose, but it’s whats made the game we love…..Pagan

One of the main shortfalls of retrospective action of course is it doesn’t benefit the wronged party, but it may benefit a competitor.
Irrespective of the consistency problems, if we are going to go down the road of video reffing (and I’m personally against it as it would make the game too clinical and we’d lose the fun of post match debate) it would need to be done real time, quite how that happens I don’t know, but 90mins of playing time spread over 2+ hours is probably not what people want….Pagan

Retrospective action, in theory is good, but who highlights what needs to be looked out? If it’s the ref from the game, they’ll let more go knowing it will get sorted later, if it’s from requests from what others have seen, who are the others.
If it’s open season, and anyone can ask for something to be looked at then it’s opening a real can of worms, for instance, if Team A plays Team B, then the teams they are playing in their next matches are going to be scrutinising the match in the hope of getting some players suspended.
Then obviously there has to be consistency from the panel that looks at the incidents, and let’s face it, currently they seem to come to different decisions on a weekly basis…Pagan

Phil Thompson – for his totally impartiality
Michael Owen – or monotone Michael as we know him
Jose – he has the talent and humour, but he’s lost the humour which has done him no favours
Roy Keane – thinks he’s too important to go through airport check ins
Roman Abromovic – jealously…Pagan
