You look at the English players that have come through over the last few decades, Man U had a batch, West Ham had a batch, Southampton…., my view on this is that for some reason a group of players in an academy generates a very competitive atmosphere, where they push each other on to improve, it’s not the academy that does this as they would be able to perpetuate this, but the young players and the chemistry they create. Unfortunately in to many cases the young players don’t have that drive but they still get the financial rewards from their club, so they don’t have the hunger to push themselves and we get mediocre players…..Pagan

Watch England play, that’s the premier league without the overseas players.
NB, you need to realise the Premier league is basically an international football league based in England, the vast majority of the money comes in from abroad, take Liverpool, foreign owners, foreign kit sponsor, and the shirt sponsor is a global company based in the U.K.

20th January 2018 at 10:03 am in reply to: Sanchez: layed all eggs in one Basket – Fundamental problem in English Football #13102NB, the PL is one of the best football Leagues in the world, and as such the players in it need to be some of the best in the world. Yes the coaching system in this country needs to radically overhauled in order to be as effective in bringing through talent as some other nations, but when you consider that the U.K. has less than 1% of the worlds population how many of the top players in the world do you expect it to produce?
Not quite sure how you run your finances NB, but I tend to look round for the best deal, I’m not overly keen on overpaying for things, football is a business, the clubs are run as such, they will do what’s best for them, not the national side.
I don’t know if you saw the BT documentary “no hunger in paradise” but that touched on the lack of desire in English players to succeed as they get paid too much at a very young age, before they’ve even played in the first team….Pagan

20th January 2018 at 8:26 am in reply to: Sanchez: layed all eggs in one Basket – Fundamental problem in English Football #13093In addition to the above by srd79, top English players come at a premium price, you can usually get an equally talented overseas player for less than the equivalent English one….Pagan

NB, the assistant ref, is obviously there to assist, the 4th official is there to do the off field duties and be a back up should the ref no longer be able to continue his duties.
Don’t put yourself down as a mug, I was just saying talking points are what makes football more than a 90 minutes a week hobby/interest/obsession, I just think VAR will make the game to sanitised, and once it’s in there will be no turning back, eventually it will end up being reffed remotely with video screens and a tannoy system….Pagan

NB, how does a ref get one or two looks and different opinions. A ref gets one look from one angle and had to make his own decision. That’s the whole point of VAR.
NB, you spend hours on here giving your opinions, the only differences between you and a pundit are they get paid and they have a bigger audience.
I don’t want VAR, as I believe it will remove the vast majority of talking points from the game, and it’s the those that keep forums like this going….Pagan

Football, as an organised sport has been around for C150 years, it’s the biggest sport on the planet, the most written about sport, the most talked about sport, every where you go you can talk footy. Why? Because of opinions and the controversy it causes, so what do we do, try and remove those and make into a sterile game, yes you get bad decisions, and sometimes it hurts when your team is on the receiving end but, when it comes to the sport as whole I stand by the phrase “if it’s not broke, don’t mend it” ….Pagan

Ed, Chuckles worked that out by incorporating his alleged salary, image rights and signing on fees and dividing it by the contract length, so it could be reasonably accurate if the figures he used are close to being correct….Pagan

9, glad it makes more sense to you, it makes less to me, the off field ref could have sat in one of the boxes at The Bridge, watched it on Sky and shouted to him, you’d get a better result for next to no coast….Pagan

I’d prefer the VAR person to say you need to see the video replay you may want to change the decision. If we’re going to have VAR it still needs to be the on field ref that makes the final call…. Pagan

9, it would have been intersting on Tuesday night if the ball had been played through 20 yards further away from goal, I suspect the ref would have gone incorrectly with the flag, rather than let play go to see what happened…Pagan

Chuckles, there is a video screen at the side of the pitch that the ref can look at if he wants to review an incident, he can also take advice from the person watching remotely, in my opinion the off pitch observer should have the ability to tell the ref he should look at the video and any final decision should be taken by the ref on the pitch….Pagan

Alfie, VAR can only be used to
Make sure a goal is legitimate
Penalty decision
Confirm or rescind a red card
Mistaken identityThis can either be done by the ref looking at a video screen or the ref can ask for it to be done remotely.
Diving doesn’t come into it unless it is given as a penalty and the ref want to check his decision, diving is a yellow card offence and as such cannot be reviewed

The Pedro, Willian and Morata incidents last night were diving decisions/yellow cards, the ref stopped the game for those reasons. VAR can only be used for penalties, red cards, goals and mistaken identity, as the game wasn’t stopped for any of those reasons I don’t really see if it could be used.
The simple solution though would be to upgrade diving to a red card offence, if the ref thinks you’ve dived he blows and states a possible red card decision, he reviewes it and it’s either a
Dive – red card
Foul – free kick
Legitimate contact – drop ballTo be honest I can’t see how anyone can argue that diving shouldn’t be a straight red
As for Morata, that should now be the bench mark, you argue with or abuse the ref you walk
