I don’t think Jose is becoming more negative, I just think more teams are trying to be more positive and the difference is more visible. Jose is Jose, he sticks to what has brought him results…..Pagan

Nice one Ed, think all of us on here need to help him a little bit when he starts to ramble, politely point out it’s time for him to switch off, rather than have a go at him and stoke the fire….Pagan

I don’t think Sky are being irresponsible, they’re maximising the hype surrounding the fixture, they need to keep the viewing figures up, to keep the advertising revenue coming in, so they can continue to pay the premier league…..Pagan

During Jose’s second stint at Chelsea, in the season he won the league, Chelsea had played good attacking football, however a couple of defeats, one in the FA cup and I think one against Spurs gave Jose the excuse for him to revert to his functional style of football. This is now what’s happening at Man U, personally I don’t think anyone should be surprised, Jose’s coaching style has always been nullify the opposition first and then hopefully win the game on the break, and to be fair this has worked extremely well for him. The problem that Jose has at his current club is they are used to winning things with a certain style, not just grinding out results, obviously the fact their neighbours are doing both isn’t helping the relationship between some fans and the manager…..Pagan

21st February 2018 at 7:15 pm in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #16198Alfie, that’s a fair summary, Barca had way more ball and played it around, Chelsea defended well on the whole and limited their opportunities, and as in all things you get what you deserve and the game ended a draw….Pagan

21st February 2018 at 5:30 pm in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #16187Alfie, you may put a great deal of faith in statistics, but football isn’t played on paper it’s played on grass, and as the Great Brian Clough said when asked whether he would have been a better manager had he had access to the statistical information about teams and individuals they had now, he replied “we’ve always had it, only in my day we called it our eyes”
Anyway here’s two stats for you
33% of fatal car accidents are caused by drunk drivers, therefore it’s safer to drive drunk than drive sober.
96% of statistics are made up
There are lies, damn lies and statistics
seriously though, the data collected is done with certain parameters, and doesn’t take into consideration players with specialist talents as everything has to be judged against some form of control sample.
As far as stats go, I’m with Brian

21st February 2018 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #16178Paxton, not precious, but players have different skill sets, Kane is a fantastic player, particularly in the box and with one on ones. Why? because he works hard at it, Willian is good at those shots from outside the box, why? because he works at it, Lampard said after the game he scores those type of goals all the the time in practice.
So in short, you have to take into consideration the player to determine what is an opportunity to score….Pagan_____________________________

21st February 2018 at 2:09 pm in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #16170So Opta are saying there’s an element of luck in goals, hence they use the word chance, I don’t use that word, preferring to use the word opportunity. For Willan to be able to hit three shots with what can only be described as a high degree of accuracy and repeatability would suggest a great deal of skill.
Or you could say that Beckham was a very lucky player when it came to free kicks rather than a highly skilled one…..Pagan_____________________________

21st February 2018 at 12:21 pm in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #16155Games are decided by goals, that is true, but, no player has a 100% conversion rate, so the more opportunities you create the greater the likelihood of scoring is. Looking at stats for matches quite often the team with the least possession has had more shots.
For me, I quite like the fact that Chelsea are creating opportunities to shoot from further out, when teams are well organised at the back the it’s more difficult to manufacture opportunities closer in, and for me that’s one of the problems Chelsea have had this season…..Pagan

Alfie, I would say that due to football’s incestuous nature, the vast majority of those in a position of power have some allegiance to one or another club, however it’s not just one person calling the shots which should minimise the chance of bias being involved. Obviously Gill has a connection with Manchester United, and this will always get thrown at him, but you would think his professionalism would negate this….Pagan
