Liverpool are on the brink of being a top team but they won’t get there on the back of a flakey defence. There’s no shame in losing at the Etihad and although 5 nil is a difficult pill to swallow nobody will go to the Etihad and get an easy game and going down to 10 men didn’t help and if City don’t win the title this season they will go very close to winning it as they have the strongest squad.
If I was a Liverpool fan though I would be concerned that going into Klopp’s third season the same defensive frailties remain that Rodgers couldn’t cure and spending £70m on two attacking players and virtually nothing on the defence two seasons into us tenure looks bad management by Klopp.
Until the defence is sorted as good as Liverpool are going forwards they are likely to concede a goal or two, they will still win more games than they lose and play some lovely football along the way which will be a joy to watch especially for the neutral but a real title challenge will remain beyond them because teams that win titles do so on the back of having strong defences and a top Keeper and Liverpool remain a long way from having that.

No matter the club it’s very difficult for the best young players to become a regular starter at the top clubs.
Chelsea let Solanke who they nurtured from aged 8 went to Liverpool because he wanted to be a starter but he’s probably no nearer to being a starter at Liverpool than he was at Chelsea.
Chelsea get heavily criticised for letting their best young players go out on loan but in reality it’s the best way for them to get game time and develop further in the man’s game Christensen and Tammy Abraham are examples of that.

nb,all good points and it’s a tragedy the way that the prestige of the FA Cup has declined.
Unfortunately I can only see the problem getting bigger as the new UEFA President looks to broaden still further entry to their two major club competitions Chelsea for instance play the Champions of Azerbaijan next week.
But hand on heart I’m just pleased to be back in the CL and there’s some mouth watering home and aways to come v Atletico Madrid and Roma. Cheers 999

banjo, 18 South American qualifiers would take 9 weeks and there would still be international friendlies to be played during the season.
Anyway we’ve done this one to death now and even you admit it will never happen so probably time to move on.

new balance, personally I would much rather have my club were involved in the extra CL and EL games than not competing in Europe a la last season.
What does need to be looked at is the PL fixture schedules following CL/EL games particularly from the knock out stages because other major European Leagues give their club’s far more help with the scheduling of their league games than the PL give our club’s.

banjo, of course I get the number of games don’t increase but your plan elongates the elite players season because with club games not ending until the end of May/ begining of June in the case of CL Finalists based on your plan Qualifying games would have to have been crammed into the period from the end of May/ beginning of June until the beginning of July when the club’s pre seasons started.
Additionally the South American qualifiers play 18 games so 18 games would have to be fitted into 5/6 weeks maximum which with travel etc times would be impossible additionally it would give the elite players no close season break at all.
Those are the facts buddie!

banjo, last season didn’t end until 21/05,the 27/05 for Arsenal and Chelsea and 3/06 for Juve and RM.
Based on your plan between those dates and pre season for the clubs starting at the beginning of July the World Cup qualifiers would and could be fitted in practically speaking but it would give the players no break whatsoever and risk burn out and further injuries the body needs some time to recover that’s my point.

banjo, no spread sheets required my post above lays out last season exactly which ended on the 21/05 for every PL club bar Arsenal and Chelsea whose seasons ended on the 27/05 with the Cup Final. The Champions League Final involving Real Madrid and Juventus was a week after the FA Cup Final on June 3rd.
The top clubs started their pre season from the beginning of July.
Those are the facts banjo based on an actual season and whilst the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup might practically have been built into the few weeks between the end of the 2017 season and the beginning of pre season it would provide the players with no break at all and would stretch them beyond the bounds of reasonableness physically.
No point in falling out about it though because it’s all hypothetical and as you yourself confirmed in an earlier post never going to happen. Cheers 999

banjo, last season ran from the 15th Aug to the 21st May the 27th May for the two teams in the Cup Final and pre season club games started from the beginning of July.
Which if you then added 5 weeks of international fixtures would mean the top players had virtually no summer break whatsoever.
It is imo completely impractical and almost certainly never going to happen.

banjo, in order to take qualifying games out of the season with a tournament every other year all the qualifying games would have to go on into the summer break and become a mini tournament ie.
Summer of 2017 All World Cup qualifiers
Summer of 2018 World Cup Finals
Summer of 2019 All Euro qualifiers
Summer of 2020 Euro FinalsSo instead of World Cup and Euro qualifiers spread over two years they would all be crammed into each non World Cup and Euro tournaments season end.

banjo,
1) International Managers need time to work with the players in their international squads which can’t be limited to just the end of the season imo.
2) if qualifying games were just limited to the summer break player would be playing for 12 months every year which would stretch them even further mentally and physically.
3) the international fixture schedule is dictated by FIFA and UEFA and is unlikely to change any time soon.

…..3) plus players need a break from playing football too cramming all of the qualifiers into the Summer would deny all top players that break. What we’ve got may not be perfect but it’s the most sensible route.

1) Like it or not there will always be international football.
2) International teams need friendlies for squad development. International Managers can’t be expected to get tactics and player selections right without playing friendlies in preparation for qualifiers and tournaments.

Attack wise I’m sure Liverpool will give City a few problems but City have an array of attacking talent available to them and it may be a case of how well Liverpool can do at the other end of the pitch to keep them out.

LaLiga an association of the top club’s in Spain has called upon UEFA to investigate PSG and Man City in relation to FFP.
Their concerns relate to state supported football clubs.
UEFA had already planned an investigation into PSG prior to LaLiga’s petitioning but is seemingly planning no investigation into Manchester City.

nb, so what! track back and check the players that have been loaned out by Chelsea a number have gone on to become stars the majority have gone on to have very good careers.
You talk about Boga he joined the club when he was 10 is 20 now and has been close to breaking into the squad a year on loan playing regularly in the Championship will do him the world of good under Harry just as it did Tammy Abraham at 19 who was the second top scorer in the Championship scoring 23 goals at Bristol City and is now on loan at Swansea scoring his first PL goal last week v Palace.
There are three elements to a loan player, the player, the club and the club he is loaned to in the majority of all Chelsea loans all three benefit and there is a whole department at Chelsea including Scouts and Coaches that manage the players out on loan who are watched in every game they play for the loan club and the whole set up is incredibly professional.
banjo, as per usual you’re on your usual Chelsea hobby horse just to remind you the theme of this thread is PSG and FFP!
Cheerio folks.
