Sean, you’re right absolutely no reason to be downbeat look at the way Liverpool played v Arsenal albeit a poor Arsenal team that day but it was a delight to watch that kind of football as a neutral.
I guess if I was a Liverpool fan I would be a tad frustrated currently because Liverpool look so near but are yet so far away and if Klopp could only get on top of his defensive issues I suspect we all might be chasing your tail, however with my Chelsea hat on hopefully that doesn’t happen.?
But talk of banners, fly pasts and getting rid of Klopp are bonkers imo. Cheers 999

Sean, but if Liverpool had the right personell defensively and we’re Coached better defensively they would be genuine title contenders.
These defensive frailties go all the way back to Rodgers and Klopp is effectively in his third season at Liverpool and hasn’t addressed it at all and there was significant money to spend this summer as the £35m spent on Oxlade Chamberlain and the circa £70m bid for Lemar demonstrates.
If Klopp addresses the defensive issues Liverpool will be competing with Utd, City and Chelsea.
You’re right when their in the ascendancy attack wise Liverpool are great to watch but outscoring the opposition if you concede 2 or 3 doesn’t work all the time and if Klopp continues to fail to address it , it may not just be the media and fan forums that start to question him.

Parsons Green so close to the Bridge and where I used to park or ride the tube too. Terrible news again.

nb, I can’t think that too many Liverpool fans support that banner whoever is responsible for it and I seriously doubt it will ever fly nor should it imho.
But I would be surprised if the owners aren’t asking the same questions of Klopp as Hightown poses above as well as some of those posed on this thread too and that Klopp will need to come up with some answers in terms of actions in the medium to long term otherwise his position could be in jeopardy which would be a shame because he’s added a lot of colour to the PL and with a bit of fine tuning Liverpool aren’t that far away from being genuine title challengers.

Klopp’s a likeable guy whose sides play exciting football.
The vast majority of Liverpool fans remain behind him and preparing banners for fly pasts seems a bit previous, he does though seem to have a bit of a blind spot towards the art of defending which has been a Liverpool problem that pre dates even Klopp.
Question marks remain over both Keepers and playing them alternatively and in different competitions isn’t helping an already fragile defence equally despite now being in to his third season he’s spent virtually nothing on a defence that needed strengthening all the way back to Rodgers adding at the same time players like Oxlade Chamberlain for £35m whose at best a squad player in an already well covered Liverpool midfield.
Klopp will need to buy himself out of this defensive problem and VVD is not a magic sticking plaster as it will also require further areas to be strengthened some adjustment in tactics and better defensive Coaching if Klopp can’t deliver all of the above as exciting as it is to watch his teams play at times it won’t be he banners flying above his head he needs to worry about it will more likely be the owners behind his back.

Paxton, completely agree with you mate and if Klopp doesn’t begin to turn these defensive issues around shortly remembering this is effectively his third season he may well come under pressure from the owners.
Fergie time also makes a good point above re Carragher’s views too and I think he’s right it’s probably not going to be solved just by signing the likes of Van Dijk it’s also about tactics and training

Just my opinion as a neutral.
Liverpool’s problems are four fold one is Klopp’s philosophy he is an attack biased Coach and his mantra is we will score more goals than you which is a big task if you potentially concede two goals a game.
Klopp also seemingly lacks the ability to organise his team defensively he has neither got or bought the right players to right the weaknesses that exist defensively.
At Goalkeeper it’s Mignolet or Karius neither are really good enough imo and he can’t make his mind up, Lovren and Matip aren’t consistent enough and are error prone , Moreno is great going forwards but totally flawed defensively and none of the other defensive players are sound enough defendively.
Add to that the lack of a quality defensive midfielder to protect the back four at least until next season when Keita arrives and these problems are likely to continue and worryingly for Liverpool fans Klopp is in his third season now without solving them.
On the front foot though Liverpool are capable of dominating and beating anyone which must make all of the above even more frustrating for Liverpool fans.
Hopefully Klopp will continue to search for the solutions because should be add a solid defence to his current attack perhaps with a goalscoring striker we could all well be chasing their tails.?

We’ll done to Spurs and City on two very good wins, disappointing for Liverpool to drop points at home after conceding so late but it’s not a disaster given the Maribor v Spartak result which leaves all 4 teams on 1 point so all still to play for.

Celtic for all the talk of an invincibles season under Rodgers last season are playing in a one team League and in one team Cup competitions in Scotland and Celtic are never going to be able to compete in the CL it’s just to big a step up from the SPL to the CL.

Jim, ha, ha very true mate but you can only beat what’s in front of you and those goals might come in handy in what is a tough Group with AM and Roma home and away to come.
How’s the back doing? Cheers 999

Ed, silly of me I forgot PSG although I still think it might take them a season or two but you’re right they are definitely another potential winner.
I agree with you re City being the best equipped and they’ve got a big squad too albeit still a bit of a dodgy defence wouldn’t rule out United either big squad great Keeper clever Manager tactically and experience of winning the EL last season.
Spurs have a tough Group and the Wembley factor which inspires visiting teams from Europe, Liverpool will get out of the Group but are fragile defensively and Chelsea not quite ready yet and still a bit short squad wise. Cheers 999

Fantastic, can’t wait to hear the Champions League music playing again.
The worlds Best club competition whether your club’s in it or not imho.
The Group stages can be a tad mundane at times but once we get into the Round of 16 it’s Rock and Roll football.?
It’s difficult to look past Real, Barca, AM, Juve and Bayern as potential winners but as has be proven before you can never tell.

Sean, Liverpool still need a quality keeper and a quality centre back imo mate those two positioned strengthened plus Keita would turn them into genuine title challengers imo.
According the stats I’ve it’s £80m in, excluding Solanke and £35m out in this summers window so circa £45m spent plus the Solanke fee which will probably be £5m or more will take the spend to circa £50m this window and circa plus £16m in credit last season.
I guess it depends on the brief from the owners though progress and compete for the PL title or achieve and try and maintain CL football on a low net spend?

A good Chelsea recovery after the unlikely opening day defeat by Burnley, 3 wins on the spin 2 of them from difficult away games v Spurs and Leicester has been positive and the team and the bench look far stronger now as Chelsea recover from injuries, suspensions. no Costa and a difficult transfer window and Chelsea should get stronger as the new signings begin to find their feet and with Hazard starting games.
Realistically 3 titles in 4 seasons is a bit too much to wish for but I would be disappointed if Chelsea finished lower than 3rd, hopefully subject to the draws being kind a domestic Cup is not beyond us and a bit of a run in the CL too. Here’s hoping.

nb, red cards are rarely if ever over turned the football authorities don’t like undermining the Referees and the current laws of the game require Refs to give red cards for dangerous play which despite no intent that’s what Mane’s challenge was.

Sean, the net spend was low but so was Chelsea’s £80m less the £60m for Oscar taken in January.
But turning back to gross spend though for a minute Liverpool spent £70m on two attacking players and bar Robertson at £8m who is a primarily an attack minded wing back nothing was spent on a defence that has been crying out for attention all the way back to Brendan Rodgers.
The chase for VVD went t’s up early in the window and there was no plan b and Keita who will be a Midfield asset to the defence won’t arrive until 2018.
Perhaps Klopp remained convinced getting VVD was achievable, perhaps he’s being wise and keeping his powder dry for VVD until January or the summer and it will prove a shrewd move but currently Liverpool despite their attacking potency still look frail defensively and even achieving a top 4 spot looks more challenging for all this season.
Liverpool are very close imo to being real title contenders had Keita and VVD been recruited this season I think they would have a real chance of the title, my fear if I was a Liverpool fan would be that Klopp seems to have a bit of a defensive blind spot and going into what effectively is his third season he should have solved the defensive problems by now.

Sean, you’re right it is only one game and going down to 10 men had an effect on the scoreline if not the result.
But you get the feeling that as great as Liverpool are going forwards they won’t be genuine title challengers until Klopp gets to grips with some of Liverpool’s defensive frailties.
Liverpool are a joy to watch in attack mode particularly when they are in the ascendancy as they were last week v Arsenal but in tighter games against more difficult opponents there’s every chance that defensively they’ll be vulnerable.
Credit to Mane for his tweet and whilst I can understand the sending off splitting opinion because there was no malice intended by Mane the guidelines to Referees on dangerous play left Moss with no alternative but to send Mane off. Shame because a difficult game then became impossible for Liverpool.
