One shot on target for England tonight. Two for Scotland.

Yeh, can we change the international VAR for the premier league VAR? Seems a lot more measured.

Very similar to the Croatia game. Fairly safe and secure at the back, but disjointed up top. Something different required.

Yeh it’s a good point Nil about moneyball and Wijnaldum. Because of our recent successes and some bigger spending (though mostly from player sales) we seem to have forgotten that moneyball still seems to be a big part of the transfer strategy. People may point to Milner signing a new contract back in 2019 despite being in his 30s, but perhaps the club doesn’t want too many older players in the squad I don’t know. But surely better to wait until any new younger player forces the established older player out rather than throwing the established player out first. Unless there’s another reason but given Wijnaldum played a lot of games still presumably Klopp was happy with him.

I think Spurs, or Levy are having a mid life crisis.

Yeh was just thinking that last night regarding Bale. He’s certainly not disappointed on the international stage and has very much risen to it. I think he has that footballing arrogance which helps a lot and he also seems very content and settled in that Welsh group of players.

I think Rafa offers a feeling of safety and experience which can obviously be attractive attributes to a club. Tactically, he’s one of the best. As a man manager, he’s not. And therein lies the problem. For me it’s not so much that managers like Rafa or José are outdated tactically. But they are outdated culturally, in terms of players now being more expressive on the pitch, being more powerful and influential in the dressing room, wanting to be loved and playing where they want to be played. That’s primarily what both these managers are struggling with which leads to frustrations on both sides.

It’s a surprising one that isn’t it Sean? But then there is such a shortage of managers that it’s almost inevitable they have to start considering such appointments. I remember when Rafa took the Chelsea job and almost to appease the tribal elements unhappy about the decision, I think Rafa remarked at the time that he was “just a professional doing a job”… which sounds something like a hitman would say 😂 But to clubs, sometimes needs must in these situations.

Uh-oh Ed, don’t bring the Henderson debate to England. We’ve covered about 20 volumes of threads over Henderson on Liverpool threads over recent years.

Harry, I agree that the team seems more spirited and passionate in recent years and I have no personal animosity against Southgate, but I see him more as an overseer of things than a manager. And yes, we just aren’t producing many good managers so there aren’t many alternatives. It’s where we are. So a step in the right direction after the debacle over the last few decades? Yes. But the culture remains a problem and we really do need to rein in the ridiculous hype and expectation as well as needing to stop inflating egos. The problem with all the broadcasters is that they feel they have to be super positive about everything and all the pundits then have to follow that narrative so everyone has the blinkers on. Perhaps if we start being more grounded and realistic we might start seeing the wood for the trees so we can more clearly see what else we need to do. But what also remains a problem I think is the premier league vs England. I think the league is still where most of the fan interest is, and that England in tournaments is just a bit of fun that we get carried away with but quickly forget.

Is Southgate as bold a coach as some make him out to be or is there a strong philosophy/identity there? Or is there just the fashionable ‘press’ there that every team now tends to do in a game? Beyond the press, it’s as though the players up top are told to just go and express themselves and hope things happen. I also fear we’re now putting huge hype/pressure on to Foden like we did with ‘golden boy’ Rooney. I have no problem with Foden being in the team & I recognise his talent, but we really need a philosophy up there or else, like England teams of old, it will just get very frustrating very quickly and we remember Rooney’s “nice to have your own fans booing you” comment after coming off the pitch some years ago.
I really don’t want to be over negative after winning yesterday, and I know the conditions were difficult and it was the first game. I’m just not convinced the same sorts of problems that have dogged us for so long have been addressed yet at the root. And when I see the pundits almost waxing lyrical again after the game, I just think here we go again.

Brian, what irritates me is it’s always the same pundits no matter what the channel or competition. Heck of a gravy train for all of them.

I agree Sean, can’t really bear much of the coverage now, either pre match or post match; they just can’t resist the hype. As for the game, yes the conditions were quite hot, but up top it still looked a bit like the forward players just got told to express themselves as opposed to being coached to play and a few hopeful high balls were just floated up field – the goal actually came from deeper in midfield. We’ll see how things develop over the coming games.

Not as overly impressed as the pundits are. Not the greatest of games. Didn’t think our forward players offered very much. I’d be exploring different options in the next game. Both sides were actually pretty even in the stats, having a total of 8 shots each, and 2 shots each on target.

Brian, like Liverpool, Spurs are more of a “sell to buy” club, so they’re not going to bring an established top manager who is used to spending large amounts, which is why the Conte talks broke down very quickly. So I think someone like Galtier is a better fit for them, having taken Lille from the bottom to the top in a relatively short space of time, and not spending the earth either. Yes, the French league isn’t as strong, but he’s clearly someone who can the get the best out of a group. I can’t really see anyone else out there unless they go for someone like Howe and want to play the much longer game of a rebuild.

You look at the impact a player like Hazard had at Chelsea; they very much know the benefits of speculating to accumulate.
