Sean, I wonder if Klopp will play Gomez as opposed to Matip as Gomez has more pace to get back.

Spurs do now have a Portuguese manager, plus too many other personalities at City.

I doubt the board would sack a manager after just backing him in the transfer window. Arsenal are trying to play the long game now with more long term signings who have potential. They are playing it safe in that sense I think. I believe they had quite a few players missing. If theyโre still really struggling some months into the season, theyโll have to review but I donโt see anything happening yet.

Ed, I just mean someone to get a grip sometimes in the middle of the park. I agree that kind of defensive midfielder is out of fashion now – what you tend to have now is midfielders who are either very mobile and put a shift in like Kante, or can read the game very well like Fabinho. That’s the modern equivalent of what I think you need.

Ed, I think last season Man Utd got into a very good groove which also helped confidence in such situations. I’d just worry they are more a team who can go on runs but can’t sustain them over a season. They just seemed to fizzle out today not long after they scored. I think they’re desperate for a Roy Keane type figure in there.

Man Utd have some very good players, but they do seem to lack charters and leaders on the pitch. The Southampton goal summed them up today. Fernandes outmuscled off the ball, some quick play by Southampton and a goal. I think Southampton outmuscled them on several occasions which would concern me if I was a fan. Also, although Man Utd can be very effective, do they have a strong enough identity to have that belief in every game?

Rover, it’s to try and stop the sneaky free kick being done that goes under the wall as the wall jumps up.

I think itโs more the way Norwich play that made them easy meat for the big clubs. Several of the goals they conceded looked dreadful attempts to play the offside trap.

We look like we’re back to our 2019/20 spec. And we’ve missed those long diagonal balls from Van Dijk.

Mak, it is funny isnโt it when a player comes in and generally hits the ground running, itโs suddenly like theyโve always been there.

You could have Lewandowski for ยฃ110 mill Adlab. Missed less games than Kane through injury I think.

I agree Lucky, it is barmy that people abroad can watch more matches than us. I suspect the number of live matches will increase but it will be gradually. But other broadcasters will no doubt get involved meaning youโll need to pay all of them separately which wonโt be cheap. I believe the TV money has now plateaued, though that might not be for long.

Brian, top clubs tend to dominate when they bring in a top manager. Man Utd dominated under Fergie. Man City didn’t dominate the league until Guardiola came in. But he won’t be there forever. And when big managers do leave, it does create a problem in terms of a team’s identity because quite often that identity will leave the club along with the manager when he leaves. And quite often you see clubs scrambling afterwards for direction as a vacuum is left. It tends be then when clubs go on absurd spending splurges. Some clubs manage better than others, with Chelsea being the obvious example, but then they have never been able to dominate the league as they’ve never had a manager for long enough. But then, a title every 3/4 years would make most fans pretty happy and Chelsea are due a title very soon by the law of averages. But be it top managers, or top player scouts, these people won’t be there forever, and clubs will inevitably have to go through cycles.
Regarding trying to make things fairer for other, smaller clubs, it’s very difficult. I think the sport, like many things, underwent a Thatcherite revolution in the early 90s whereby it became less about a community sport, and more about a dog eat dog cutthroat capitalist business. But…with the very depressing culture we now have with many of our young caught up in deprivation, knife crime, and a complete lack of direction, I think we have to push more of these wealthy clubs to offer these kids more opportunities which would be win win for both sides. I’m not actually a socialist, but you don’t have to be one to realise the catastrophe this loss of community has been. We have to push clubs back more towards their communities, and just maybe we are starting to see more signs of this with more youngsters now coming through.
We need to see more stories like these…
"Daniel told us how important sleep is. Instead of going out to parties, have the strength to say no. Football has to come first."

Well that’s it nil. It was awful timing for him and the long term vision the club saw for him (by giving him the 6 year contract) was never really there, but it is now with Ole. Yet Moyes is much more experienced than Ole. I’m not saying that would necessarily mean Moyes would now be doing better, but I just think it’s an interesting one to ponder.

I wonder how David Moyes would now get on with this Man Utd squad with this much improved recruitment team in place? Serious question.

It’s a common problem Steveo when managers have been there a long time and then leave. Wenger I think had a lot of power at the club, and when he departed, it left a vacuum and the owners seem to be still scrambling around for leadership & direction. Man Utd have only just recently settled down again after Fergie left.

Agree Mak, after all the dilly-dallying, Spurs have got themselves a good manager.
