Amusing debate between Carra & Keane on Ronaldo. For me Ronaldo should be used by the club at the right time rather than thinking he has to play every game. They’ve got caught up in the Ronaldo fever and let themselves be used by him. He may be scoring goals but the team have gone backwards this season.

Was the thinking at Utd, basically, ‘Right, who mentored/inspired Tuchel & Klopp? Rangnick? Right, get him in!’? Given the success at both those clubs, wouldn’t be a bad idea in theory.

He’s now accepting Man Utd job also because of future ‘consultancy’ role with power into his hands.

I remember the debate between Neville & Carra some years ago and how full backs tended to either be failed centre backs or failed wingers. But it’s arguably now one of the key areas of the football pitch. Are players now going to be developed to be right/wing backs as part of their youth development? I guess most players with any attacking skill are always still going to want to play up top.

I’d definitely take Poch ahead of Rodgers, he’s a more balanced manager. But it’s then ultimately a question of exactly how far he could take them. I think under Poch, they’d probably have to unload the likes of Ronaldo & Pogba sooner rather than later.

But the chemistry and conditions also have to be right. I’m just not sure, thinking more about it, that Poch has enough authority/charisma for the Utd job. They’re still desperate to find that long term man at all costs and think he’s the best candidate for that. As Ed has alluded to, this idea that a manager overachieving at a club has just needed more money is too simplistic regarding their prospects at clubs with higher expectations. It’s a very different environment.
Poch should perhaps have been the manager to bridge the gap that Solksjaer was deemed to be. But I’m not sure he should be deemed as the manager to get them to the final destination.
Clubs have to be ruthless with managers, and use them to get to certain points, then install a better candidate when one is available. No better example than Chelsea with regards to Tuchel following Lampard.

And that’s it lucky, they’re hellbent on finding that next one in a million candidate who can stay and build a legacy for a decade or two. And they’ll be prepared to wait in the doldrums until kingdom come until they can find him.

I think if any job was tailor made for Conte at this time, it was to Man Utd. That dressing room needs shaking up, it needs discipline, it needs someone strong enough but charismatic enough to stand up to the players whilst maintaining a level of respect but also fear. The players need to know if they’re not performing, they’re out. And he’d have the funds he wanted to bring in who he wanted. But another ship let to sail on by the owners.

Poch should bring stability. He’ll get them better defensively & they’ll be more organised. Not sure his teams have played with enough freedom & fluidity up top for me which I think has limited his success, but an improvement nonetheless.
