Klopp might hire you Sean? Congrats. Put in a good show!

Problem is I think Jota & Diaz are in better form than Salah & Mane. Though Salah is stronger and can still impact a game even if he’s not fully on it. Decisions for Jurgen to make.

Benzema seems to be aging like fine wine. His best goal returns appear to have happened over the last 3/4 seasons.

So it’s taken Man Utd a decade to finally reset after Fergie leaving. They’ve learned the hard way and blown a lot of money to boot. Like Pep & Klopp though, Ten Hag will have to have a good recruitment team behind him. They go hand in hand.

Probably too early to judge both players in terms of how they’ll be coached under their managers. Let’s see where they are next season.

Benitez may have been struggling but at least he had the experience with Newcastle in that situation. Granted there are deep problems at the club, Lampard always struck me as an odd choice – they didn’t need someone to change the philosophy of a club, they needed someone to grind out wins. (Apparently Dyche told his players at half time that Everton don’t know how to win games). Looking at their run in, getting harder and harder to see how they turn this around.

Big win for Burnley. Everton in real trouble now.

Completely agree Brian. Academy has to link back to the first team. Recruitment team and decision making at the top has to improve significantly if things are to change. Potential problems will be if the board likes a big name but Ten Hag wants someone much less known or unproven – who will win that battle?

Who’d have thought Simeone gets Atletico playing like they do? π The amusing thing watching this infamous clip after all these years, is whilst Simeone is “falling” down, he also finds time to point and explain to the referee what’s just happened π

Probably down to a lack of matches for Konate. We really shouldn’t struggle tonight. Would it be controversial to say Salah isn’t in great form at the moment?

Just one to keep an eye on for the moment. Itβs his frustrations and the performances that would concern me. Either the squad isnβt what he thought or heβs struggling to convey his messages across. Or both.

Just on Gerrard at Villa. Yes, itβs still relatively early days, but yet again itβs another Villa performance where Villa didnβt turn up in the first half. Gerrard looked frustrated. One concern I had with Gerrard becoming a manager years ago was like with John Barnes, some top players donβt go on to become great managers because they get frustrated when coaching players that arenβt as good as they were. Weβll see how things pan out, but Des Kelly got widely criticised over his post match questions to him a few weeks ago with Gerrard getting quite prickly with him over it. Early days or is the pressure starting to come on now?

To be fair, in an awful lot of our 18/19 league winning season games, we weren’t particularly spectacular. So I’m not too worried. We aren’t conceding goals anymore and are less gung-ho – that’s been the key to our recent form. Yes, we can up it, and I’m sure we will at some point, which isn’t a bad thing.

Good to hear from you Brian.
In any competition you are obviously to have a rivalry which is going to spill over with emotion when the adrenalin is running. What I think has worsened things is the big money and owners in the game whereby you don’t just have to beat the opposition, you have to obliterate them. A loss at a big club now is not just unacceptable, it’s almost a crisis. And the media I think plays its part here too. As well as that our general cultural decline and worrying drug use further exacerbates fan behaviour. As I’ve quoted here before, a psychiatrist/journalist was once asked to do a story on a football match between Italy and England quite a few years ago now – when he asked the England fans (many of whom were well educated professionals) why they were chanting obscenities at the Italian fans, their general response was, “Well, you’ve got to let your hair down every so often haven’t you?”. And therein lies the problem. Most think these things are an acceptable and normal way of de-stressing.
You can try and put a lid on it, but it won’t get to the root of the problem, which is a top down cultural decay. Most of the other issues are pretty much linked to this. Regrettably I think all you can really say is that things are going to get worse before they get better.

The concern for me from a Liverpool perspective is if we have to bring in someone else outside the usual 5 strikers to that front 3. As we saw at the weekend, it all suddenly looks a bit makeshift. Liverpool are going to have to keep that front 5 fit to be constantly available for a position in the front 3. If they are able to do that it can perhaps be more effective than City. But then City have a more robust interchangeable system, even if it may not be quite as effective. So Liverpools front 5 players being fit and available will be a key factor in the race.

I understand Klopp obviously needs to rotate the squad, but the problem is we only really have one way to play with the pacey strikers up top, so starting with Firmino & Jota up top was never really going to work effectively. Would it not have been better to start with Diaz, then bring off later as opposed to vice versa?
