VAR is basically punishing trivial and petty things like someone’s big toe being offside but then missing penalties. And there’s this culture of not wanting to be seen to be re-refereeing the game and undermining the on field referee. I don’t think it’s fit for purpose in its current state.

Chelsea gradually getting better as the season goes on. It’s taken a while but was always going to given how many players they’d bought and the lack of cohesion in the team that I think that that would result in.
I think City have struggled to replace Mahrez and Gundogan and so have lost something even if they are still a good side.

Yes this is indeed a problem. I think Werner is also in the category of maybe being a good no.9 but someone who struggles to play in a front 3 system. I actually think Nunez is the opposite of that in that he has the power and pace to fit well into a front 3 but struggles to finish. Diaz I think is more of a traditional winger who can play quite well in a front 3 but will only bag the odd goal here and there.
Salah and Mane were unique in their ability to be both great wingers AND great goal scorers. But finding such players is difficult.

Haaland & Nunez have made City & Liverpool worse. Discuss.

I think the attacking quality of the top 3 teams in the premier league isn’t at the elite level of other European teams, though City’s is still the best in our league and that is what will probably see them over the line for another league title. Arsenal lack world class options up top and Liverpool only really have Salah as that world class option and he seems to be still be struggling after his injury.

It was indeed lockdown over that season 20/21 – though we were actually top of the league at Christmas back then. Whilst we also had midfielders having to come into defence, I still think the root cause of our awful form thereafter was the form of the strikers which was very poor. If I remember rightly Jota was in form up until around Christmas too that season and then got injured until March. And it feels familiar again now. I think Salah is still struggling after injury. Nunez likewise though I don’t think he’s scored against any of the top teams this season. Diaz is more of a winger who can get a goal here and there. Jota has been injured. And Gakpo again has not been prolific. I think it’s mad Klopp hasn’t used the youngster Danns more. We’re desperate to finish some of these chances and he’s looked a really good finisher.
Obviously leaking goals doesn’t help defensively. But the form of our strikers for me has always dictated the form of our team under Klopp. I think it struggles to win ugly when they’re not delivering.

This isn’t a new problem at Liverpool. It seems to happen from time to time. Remember the 6 consecutive games at home we lost 3 years ago? I’ve just plucked this stat out from Opta posted 3 years ago from that period. Looks very familiar and we had a front 3 of Mane, Salah & Firmino for some of those games. I think that was down to the poor form/fatigue of those players 3 years ago. Similar to now arguably. If our strikers don’t perform well, the whole team suffers. Remember this stat below is from 3 years ago.
115 – Following their 16 attempts this afternoon, Liverpool have now failed to score with each of their last 115 shots at Anfield in the @premierleague (ex. pens), the longest ever run by a side at home since we have exact times of shots available in the competition. Riddle. https://t.co/cyuijRhvZG

Yeh I said last season he looked tired and thought he might have left then. He ain’t got the energy for another go.

Reality has caught up with us I’m afraid. I thought we’d finish 3rd at the start of the season as we were in a transition. We’ve done remarkably well considering that and have teased ourselves we could do it but we just weren’t good enough for the title sadly.
This team is at its best when its attacking players are in full flow. We still haven’t replaced Mané.

“I’d say Isak is the better all round forward. I think he’d actually be better for City than Haaland is to be honest. I really rate him.”
You could argue the same with Nunez & Liverpool. I think when teams get to the top they sort of forget the lessons that got them there and they get dazzled by the hot property around Europe as opposed to actually looking how well they can affect the team.

Utd still have some quality in the team which will always still give them a chance. But whilst some of those players may have some character, what I think Utd lack is a togetherness and as has been mentioned some strange tactics in making them so exposed.
But on that last point – have Utd really missed Mount in midfield this season in terms of being that water carrier & energy in midfield a bit like Henderson was at Liverpool? Something you might argue Liverpool have missed this season in terms of being controlled and tight in the middle of the park. Casemiro has obviously missed quite a few games too. Difference is Liverpool have more togetherness and quality here and there this season which has made them more robust although if those players aren’t on it, the form can dip as it has done recently. So in some ways you see similar problems in both teams but Liverpool are more robust enough to handle it.

It may act as the kick up the backside we’ve needed and if we do fall out of Europe we then need have less fixture congestion to worry about in the run in.

The attacking players aren’t delivering at the moment and we lack the experience/solidity of some years ago to keep things tight. Not a good combo.

Just on the title chase, it’s not inconceivable that 2 teams at the top finish level on points, goals scored and goals against (look how similar goals for & against is with Liverpool & City). Then it’s a playoff for the title at Wembley isn’t it? Oooooof.

Yeh Carragher was recently on the Fans Overlap and was asked what Utd player he would take if he could and he said Mainoo and I agree with him. Looks to have everything in his locker already and I love players that can run with the ball.

Still trying to work out how we beat Utd 7-0 last season – when they were better. But we couldn’t beat them this season – when we’ve been better and they’ve been worse???

I don’t think it’s the end of the world as I’m not convinced Arsenal or City will win all their remaining games. But obviously very frustrating.
With Mané & Salah we had two 20 goal a season strikers up top. Oh how we still miss that. Salah still not up to his usual sharpness. Nunez not good enough in scoring for the money paid for him. Diaz more of a winger. Jota greatly missed.
