Salah looking sharper. Still defensively suspect.

Indeed it was the loss of form of one of our few world class players up top in Salah that coincided with our slump. And our next best finisher Jota also got injured. Admittedly they were still papering over the cracks but it’s that ability that helps you to win the big prizes because that almost guaranteed goal scoring gives the team such confidence when playing.

Arsenal very good and solid but they still lack world class players, particularly at the top of the pitch. That’s ultimately the difference between them and City. I think Haaland, De Bruyne, Foden, Bernardo Silva, Rodri are different class to what Arsenal have.

Bar thinking Newcastle would do better than they did, quite happy with my prediction.

Saw this coming from the start of the season as I stated on the prediction thread. Man Utd have no wow players. The players are far too comfortable because there’s no one threatening their positions. And the manager is well out of his depth to lift the players. Contrary to last season’s “solid” season of finishing 4th and winning a cup, the team was still poor and were fortunate Liverpool & Chelsea had off seasons. Man Utd need to start acting like a big club and put someone like Tuchel in charge and start bringing in some proper quality as opposed to spending big on Madrid has-beens or supposedly young “hot property”. And that process starts with the right manager.

Ed, difference with Ange is that you can at least see a plan with him and a style of play that the players have bought into, even if he can be rather naive at the back. And whether he’s being too insistent on playing it out at the back as he did vs us yesterday, or the players are to blame I don’t know.
But with Ten Hag, it’s very hard to discern what the plan is bar just trying to be a good counter attacking team. One might argue Ten Hag is just playing the cards he’s been given but the problem is he’s signed quite a few of these players over a few seasons and they haven’t really delivered.

On Ange, I still think he did a good job galvanising the club at the start of the season. But I think a bit of reality has kicked in with the quality of the squad. This isn’t really a new thing is it? I think Conte had a rant about it. Mourinho wanted other players. Poch before him I think wanted other players.
On Chelsea, I still think they’ve turned a bit of a corner. It was always going to take a full season for all those new players to gel together.

I do actually agree the record in Europe can be a useful indicator of the measure of a manager – particularly when the league they manage in is considered one of the smaller ones.
At the same time, I don’t think Feyenoord with the calibre of players they have could ever really be expected to win a major European competition or go really far in it no matter who the manager was. Interestingly in his first season at Feyenoord, Slot lost the Europa League Conference final to Roma. In his second season, he was knocked out of the Europa League by the eventual finalists, Roma again. And this season they again dropped out vs Roma, who again have gone very far in the competition. It’s not much to go on admittedly, but I wouldn’t call it an awful record considering the team they are.
After watching several interviews with Slot, for me it is clear he has a completely different demeanour and personality to Ten Hag. He is almost constantly smiling. I do think this is an important difference. We all remember our best teachers at school being the best teachers because they were charismatic, engaging and enthusiastic. They command your attention and make you passionate too. I’m actually quite hopeful.

Our form has fallen off a cliff though I think we were papering over the cracks for quite a lot of the season.

Already discussed with Ed that Utd should go for Tuchel. I know there are reports of fallouts but even if true I think a club with bigger resources can better handle that.

If it’s the case that Klopp has had more and more say on transfers as time has gone on I’m afraid that doesn’t reflect well on him. With Edwards back next season we can hopefully reset and if it’s the case that Threeps alluded to that Slot will be happy to work with the transfer department as opposed to wanting more control then I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Whilst you obviously want the manager to have some input I don’t think such decisions can be made purely by one person. You have to have the experts making more of those decisions ideally with the trust of the manager. There were reports Klopp wasn’t sure about Salah when the club wanted to sign him. But if Nunez was a Klopp signing then that basically backs up this point. This can be a problem with long standing managers and as I say it’s good that the club has already got the structure back next season. I wonder if this has been causing tension in the club over the last few years?

We peaked when we had the magic front 3 of Salah, Mane & Firmino. I think Klopp squeezed everything out of that team and he’s struggled to replace it. I remember saying years ago not long after Klopp was appointed that I didn’t think we’d be a particularly robust side under him and may only win the odd title. It’s just the way I think Klopp is as a manager. I think he creates exciting effective teams but squeezes a lot out of them and they have occasional periods where the form can dip horribly. He’s not had the resources of other clubs but at the same time our record in the transfer market hasn’t always been great. I think Klopp has been the ultimate galvaniser. But the cycle has come to an end.

Things coming to an end not with a bang but a whimper. The strikers have gone out of form at the worst possible time.

Sums up the season this game so far for us. Just too chaotic.

Looking more likely.
🚨🔴 Initial contacts between Arne Slot and Liverpool, very positive. New contact to follow soon with Slot keen on #LFC job.
❗️ Understand there's NO release clause included into his contract; Feyenoord would request compensation fee as they did with Tottenham one year ago. pic.twitter.com/SKze1EEpY7

Depends how charismatic Slot is. As regards comparisons with the Dutch league & Ten Hag, I think Ten Hag is a poor man manager. According to the report linked below, Spurs were even put off Ten Hag’s lack of charisma when looking for a manager.
If Slot has a bigger personality he might do alright. I think he also might have had a smaller budget than other clubs in the Dutch league and still won them the title in his second year I think. The report below seems to indicate he is pretty charismatic which I think is key in helping to communicate across your ideas. So we’ll see. It also looks like he plays with a similar attacking intensity to Klopp so would obviously fit in more seamlessly. Lack of big club experience still a potential concern, but who else is out there? Wonder what tips the balance between him & Amorim? We do have a few Dutch players in the side now.

Hi Ed, my post is awaiting moderation for some reason? If you could look at when convenient that would be appreciated thanks.

VAR is basically punishing trivial and petty things like someone’s big toe being offside but then missing penalties. And there’s this culture of not wanting to be seen to be re-refereeing the game and undermining the on field referee. I don’t think it’s fit for purpose in its current state.

Chelsea gradually getting better as the season goes on. It’s taken a while but was always going to given how many players they’d bought and the lack of cohesion in the team that I think that that would result in.
I think City have struggled to replace Mahrez and Gundogan and so have lost something even if they are still a good side.
