I think theres an argument Liverpool have become better at the back as time has gone on under Klopp, but have declined a bit up top as time has gone along.

As threeps has said, we need to be at full tilt tonight and really press them. Not easy after a long season. And I do always worry about playing players that aren’t 100% fit. Be half tempted to play Bobby tonight. We need clever play in their box and the right decision making.

Predictions from back in August on page 1 of this thread. Got the top 3, but Utd really had a mare this season. Watford & Norwich as several predicted went down.

Yes Klopp was expected to finish 1st or 2nd, but then with his budget vs others, he still exceeds expectations. On the other side, you can make the argument Pep’s budget puts him under pressure to deliver. Similarly, Howe did enjoy a big budget in January vs clubs around him but again you could argue the pressure was on him & Newcastle were still in dire straits when he took over.

24th May 2022 at 5:12 pm in reply to: โฝ๏ธ๐น๐ฐFinal Day Football Gameweek 38โฝ๏ธ๐ #196323Brian, what makes City very strong is their self belief in their philosophy. No matter what is happening in a game, whether theyโre losing or winning, they are very good at maintaining their flow and their game. It sort of reminds of Wengerโs Arsenal โ even in his latter days, Arsenal were still very good at maintaining their philosophy in a game and games like the 4-4 at Anfield โ where they just kept playing their game no matter what and it was very effective stick in the memory. Where the difference is between us and City is we are more of warrior like with big heart in every game. Both sides are outstanding but in the league you need more of that relentless consistency to go to win games, in the CL you need more heart and fight. Hence City tend to be stronger in the league, we tend to be stronger in the CL. But given the tiny margins here, we are taking very very fine details as both could easily have ended up winning both the league & CL.
But what we can perhaps try and draw out from all this, to beat City in the league, is we do need better decision making in the box. Gary Neville said some months ago about how dangerous we were having those 5 strikers and it maybe gave us the edge. But actually, whilst it would be mad to criticise our strikers, we do need less selfishness at times โ and this is where City, without strikers, have actually done better as they are arguably better and more selfless in the box. We really missed Bobby in those last games because he was that selfless body in the box with very good decision making setting up chances. (Salah actually irritated me in the Spurs game as he just kept going for glory when another pass would have set someone else up in more space).
City donโt need Haaland in the league โ that much is now clear. Heโs been signed most probably to get them the CL, where you sometimes do need that rabbit out the hat moment. Whereas we need to get more leagues, so probably need to look more at a Bobby replacement than another striker, a better decision maker in the box to help set up more chances. Can Carvalho be that man? Heโll have to be very good very quickly if he is.

22nd May 2022 at 6:06 pm in reply to: โฝ๏ธ๐น๐ฐFinal Day Football Gameweek 38โฝ๏ธ๐ #196260Well that was a rollercoaster. Fair play to City. No matter the score, they always keep to their philosophy and it tends to win out in the end.
As I said back in the winter, I had a horrible feeling we were going to put a run together but still end up losing by a point again. Ah well.

As for Arteta, you can sense that lack of authority what with the lack of discipline on the pitch. And as for Aubameyang, whilst on the surface it seems he was right to offload a player he didn’t deem to be giving his all (according to reports), was it not maybe the case that Arteta just didn’t get the best out of him so he didn’t deliver? And Aubameyang was one of very few quality players Arsenal have – i.e. one player Arteta couldn’t really afford to lose. Meanwhile he’s now banging them in for Barca scoring 11 in 16.

Foxy, it would be interesting if someone did research into how many former assistant managers went on to become successful managers in the modern era. I suspect it wouldn’t be a big number. You just suspect assistant managers want to have a go at being a manager having been in someone’s shadow for a long time but as you say, it is a different job altogether requiring a much greater skillset and more often than not, it ends in tears. You have to be a figure of authority – and after previously being an assistant who can get very close and pally with the players, that can prove very difficult to transition to. And with players being ever more powerful, it makes them more difficult to manage, so that task becomes even harder.
Indeed in this list made here, you could only say Mourinho & Paisley became top managers after previously being assistants, and both are arguably from a different era now.

Thought we weren’t bad tonight considering all the changes. Bobby still important up top in creating chances. Salah has irritated me recently constantly going for shots or losing the ball too easily, thinking of his own record I suspect.

Think they are hampered by the type of players they’ve bought in though. They should still have bought in some quality rather than seeming to be obsessed by youth and potential. Though I agree the team still lacks guts and the players seem more concerned with following instructions than fighting.

Arsenal under Wenger: fed up of just qualifying for the CL.
Arsenal post Wenger: fed up of not being able to qualify for the CL.Yet another example of fans wanting a manager out only to realise the problem lies further upstairs?

16th May 2022 at 6:28 pm in reply to: ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎThe FA Cup Final 2022 – Chelsea v Liverpool ๐โฝ๏ธ GW 37 #196152The national anthem is sung for the Queen, i.e. the constitutional monarch. Boo the Prime Minister all you want – that’s the point in a constitutional monarchy. You are free to criticise and protest the government, but the Queen as Head of State is a neutral institution whose purpose is to keep the country united and take the pomp & ceremony away from politicians (who would like it very much). So I do despair somewhat when I hear booing of the anthem. And anyone who wishes us to be a republic should be careful what they wish for. Even democratic republics are not the panacea they are always claimed to be.
