Half the price of Lukaku though and most probably would have done a better job. Big mistake that for Chelsea last season.

Going out on a limb here, but think Carvalho may be as big a signing as Nunez. We really need someone of his ilk in midfield to link up to the attack. I do worry about our other midfielders in general though. Keita overall has been about average. Fabinho I just don’t hold in the same regard as others do, Thiago is injury prone and can be too casual, and Henderson is just someone I see now who helps tick things over. As ever though under Klopp, the overall collective can paper over these things.

Arsenal still lack that steeliness for me. You’d expect them to be better, but I still struggle to see them in the top 4.

Lukaku has never really been considered a top, top striker in the premier league, so I never saw that working well. Werner was not yet proven in the premier league. Lewandowski would have been a good target – could have done a job for a year until someone else was identified – though Laporta reporting apparently that Chelsea did go for him.

I think they lack established quality at the top of the pitch. That’s asking an awful lot to pin hope on to a bright 20 year old.

Sterling a good acquisition, but Chelsea need more in attack for me. Tuchel also concerned. As it stands could see Spurs finishing above them, who are on the rise under Conte.

Whilst we are on behaviour, something needs to be done about cheating and diving. Some pundits call this professional..no its cheating. Professional is when you donβt cheat.
Again, Adlab, I think this all links back to us fans now wanting to win at all costs. If you’re on the receiving end of a dive, you’re furious. If one of your players does it and wins a penalty, suddenly, you tend to look the other way. Just look at the hate all this drives. Look at the absurd salaries we’re funding. We get too obsessed and demanding with it all.

Cream always rises to the top and whatever sport anyone plays and at whatever level you have to give your all.
I don’t disagree with that Nine, and even decades ago you had teams and players who were still dominant. So you can’t change that reality. But what you can change or reduce is the over seriousness with which we, the viewing public, attaches to these things, which in turn would create fewer dominant periods as that culture would filter up to the players as our demands would reduce. You’d also probably reduce the bad behaviour of some fans.

Just to be clear, I’m not so much advocating bad behaviour, more that I’d rather see more expressive off the cuff performances as opposed to machine like strategies formulated to dominate and wear the opposition down where even a draw can no longer be tolerated. Some of the most important stats now are how far players have run and how many sprints have been made. Is that really what fans should be getting excited about?

Nil, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Personality. That’s what we’ve lost. My fellow Liverpool fans may not appreciate me saying this, but Real Madrid played with real personality in the CL this season and thats what won it for them. Many of their games were great to watch, particularly the PSG ties. They were entertainment pure and simple. Ancelotti of course instils discipline but he let’s his teams play and they have personality. That’s why theve won the CL so many times and why the English teams just can’t dominate that competition the way the Spanish teams have. City and Liverpool dominate the ball and completely squeeze the opposition, but it didn’t really help them to dominate the CL. Interesting that.

We’ve definitely lost something Ed, particularly over the last 15 years or so. The big money has helped fuel some of it in terms of business like objectives and looking for perfection. And sports science and fitness has developed a lot also. Of course you want players to take their profession seriously and give everything, but not to the point where they almost lose the idea of actually enjoying it. And you do wonder as I say, if you asked a lot of these players behind closed doors whether they’re enjoying their football with the obsessive managerial demands now, how many would actually say yes? Is this partly why you don’t tend to get players staying for the long term now? Is this generally why managers have a short self life now?
I was always moved at the end of that wonderful film “Senna” – when asked who was the best driver he raced, he didn’t say it was anyone during his F1 career. He instead he said it was someone he raced during his earlier go karting days when it was just pure racing, no politics or anything, no money involved. That always stuck with me.

Fascinating thread for those interested in the situation at Barcelona.
#FCBarcelona have announced the signing of Rapinha from #LUFC for β¬58m, while a deal to acquire Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for β¬50m is agreed in principle. The question is how can they possibly afford these players, given their well-documented financial problems?

If I was Utd, I’d view the coming season like Rodgers first season at Liverpool. Forget top 4 or any targets like that. The emphasis should be a new start, new football, new culture – get that in place first, and give the man time. Don’t expect miracles. And don’t reach for the big cheque book if progress isn’t seen immediately. That all said however…Rodgers did still have the likes of Suarez, Sturridge, Gerrard, Coutinho (later in the season) so you do still need some quality in there. Maybe Utd could get to January before getting some in. For all that’s said about January, Liverpool have probably bought some of their best players in that window – Van Dijk, Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge, etc.

I think he’s a very tempting player to go for from an owner’s perspective.

Ornstein saying that Chelsea are monitoring the situation.
π¨ EXCL: Chelsea considering Cristiano Ronaldo move. Man Utd currently say not for sale but #CFC monitoring & not ruling out. Mendes talks continue – Boehly/Eghbali intrigued by idea. Tuchel admires 37yo but unclear if he would approve @TheAthleticUK #MUFC https://t.co/oFgWSX1b8q

All players use clubs to some extent. And the bigger the player, the more power they have to make moves happen.

Not sure he’d have got the same game time at City under Pep and don’t think that would have gone down well with him. The problems at Utd have been long in the making and lie quite deep. When he suddenly became available last summer, I think Utd saw him as an easy fix to send the club further up the table but didn’t think much exactly how it would affect the balance of the team. Yes there were other problems at the club but I think Ronaldo was basically a big sticking plaster the club tried to put on the club when the problems were deeper and hence he got his rewards out of it with his goals and stature but Utd didn’t.
