I think inevitably managers get into a groove of playing the way that’s brought them success previously, and there’s a lot of inertia there for them to suddenly stop and change things. Undoubtedly, the injuries and poor form of quite a few players has had a significant impact. But Klopp clearly has big problems to solve and is going to have to change something.

Adlab, I think things are fizzling out with this team. As I said on the other thread, I think when you fire up a team as a manager, it now has to be that intense, that teams and managers struggle to sustain it over the years and unless you’re able to regularly chop and change, it’s hard to maintain.
This could now start to get very serious indeed for Klopp.

Not able to see the game but the scoreline doesn’t surprise me. A difficult place to get a result at the best of times, but the form the team is in at the moment, I feared it was always going to be a bad night. Too many things not right, from the form of the defence, the issues in midfield, and the transition up top. I’m thinking there’ll be changes at HT.

Because managers are now so generally short term and have to deliver immediately, I think you get the classic case of a light burning twice as bright but only burning half as long. You can only maintain that high intense pressure on yourself as a manager for so long before the cracks start appearing. And with Tuchel looking increasingly agitated in recent weeks, along perhaps with other things going on we don’t know about, maybe it’s just another example of his lifespan at Chelsea burning out.
Is Potter going to want to sign up to that though and potentially be chucked out in a few years? Not saying he shouldn’t be ambitious, and obviously if he feels he’s got it, you can’t really say he shouldn’t try it. But from an owner’s perspective, particularly a new one who’s just spent a load of money, do you not want a proven candidate ready to go? Rightly or wrongly, that’s why I could see them going for Zidane. At 7/1 maybe worth a punt if Potter doesn’t go for it.

Yeah, Chelsea obviously a completely different job to Brighton what with managing big players in the dressing room. Zidane would stand out from the owners perspective in terms of his record, though he was basically already royalty before he took over at Real Madrid with the respect he commanded.

Yeh admittedly the press conferences haven’t seemed right Lucky, but still seems rather barmy if he’s had a lot of say on those recent incoming signings. Hard to see Poch not getting a job in the PL this season!

Haaland just an incredible signing Adlab. Think you might finally win it this season. Even Pep’s overthinking can’t stop you this time π

Tuchel absolutely deserves time. CL first (part) season, two Cup finals last season, even after the disastrous Lukaku signing. There’s been a lot of chopping and changing in that team over summer.

Diego Costa’s back…
π¨ EXCL: Diego Costa is being flown in by Wolverhampton Wanderers + expected at the club on Tuesday – actually not for a trial but to have medical tests & if everything is ok the plan is for the 33yo striker to sign for #WWFC as a free agent @TheAthleticUK https://t.co/claxTGasNU

With VAR, with the grey areas, youβre basically opening up the decision to a committee, which I think just exacerbates the situation. With regards the monitor, would it not be better if the ref had to go down the tunnel to watch it, i.e. out the viewing eye, which only puts pressure on him?

Arsenal have lacked a steeliness about them for a long time now, even going back to Wenger, regardless of the nice football they can play. In some ways Wenger lives on. I mean Edu & Arteta both played under Wenger and both now have prominent positions at the club.

Bit of a reality check for Arsenal and Arteta. As for Utd, they’re back to being solid and effective on the counter.

Some nice stuff from Arsenal but no good if they can’t put it in the back of the net. Utd seem to have returned to their default of being solid and effective on the break.

Chucky, I think the Cucurella hair pull incident sums up the dilemma in this whole thing. The ref should have given the foul but they didnβt. So you could forgive Cucurella for making a meal of it next time so he does get the foul. He shouldn’t have to do that but this is a problem that people thought VAR would solve but it can’t, ultimately because the VAR refs are still subjective. But the players know that if they feign injury they will tend to get the decision they want because no referee wants to risk overlooking a serious injury to a player – particularly on a goalkeeper with regards to Mendy yesterday. But it works both ways, some players will feel justified in making a meal of something, like Cucurella to ensure they rightly get the free kick, or a penalty, if say, unfairly barged off the ball but able to stay on their feet. But then you can also abuse the system to feign injury to get a foul given.
I really don’t know what the solution to that is. All you can hope is the refs judge things as best they can taking everything into account. In an ideal world the referees probably need a bit of time to make the best decision. But then the fans and viewing public don’t want long decision making which disturbs the flow of the game.

Thats the problem Adlab, play acting or not, staying down puts pressure on the officials.

Just looking at it now Adlab. I think it looks fine in real time but then I think it’s case of it looking worse in slow motion with little context applied or rather the lack of understanding of the reality of having momentum and then suddenly having to jump out of the way. It’s as though the refs just see the collision with the trailing foot and immediately think foul. They should really show the replay to the ref in both slow mo and real-time.
VAR is using a microscope on football which takes out the context and reality. But then – VAR examined the hair pull on Cucurella in the game between Chelsea & Spurs and didn’t give a foul. Just looking at that again one wonders if part of the reason the foul was given on Mendy today but not on Cucurella was because Mendy stayed down today but Cucurella didn’t. I think it adds pressure on the ref to act if they’re worried a player may be injured or been harmed.

Nil, I’d still expect so, but I think teams are learning how to play City & Liverpool, and some are realising if they put the yards in and have a go, they can get some joy.
