Great finish by Asano. Another upset on the cards.

I think he’ll be desperate to cling on to a CL club somewhere to cement his numbers.

Interesting both American owners looking to pull out at the same time from Liverpool and Man Utd. Revenues peaked? Super league scrapped (for the foreseeable future)? Time to cash in?

Probably a good time to put some money on Argentina to win it now the odds will have lengthened.

Well we can’t use the excuse of players being tired after a long season this time, and the stadia will apparently be cooled to around 21C. Maybe, with the lack of preparation, it will be a scrappy start but will get better as the tournament progresses?

“they changed the rules a year or two backβ¦ as long as itβs a different Euro Comp, itβs all good I believe⦔
I think that’s been removed completely. When Liverpool signed Diaz in January he’d already played for Porto in the group games in the CL that season but was still allowed to play for Liverpool in the CL in the same season in the knockout stages.

Just couldn’t have seen Pep and Ronaldo working well together. Don’t forget the Ibrahimovic relationship with him.

“…and that supposedly comes down to Joel Glazerβs reluctance to lose his commercial superstar.”
Well, if that’s at the root of why Ronaldo was signed, there’s your problem right there.

Should have just signed a year’s contract and you’d have avoided this soap opera.

I saw some of the problems coming at Liverpool before the season started, particularly regarding the midfield, but I didn’t think it would be quite as bad as it panned out. The problem with the team is that it has to press a lot to be at its best and/or it needs that fear factor up top which helps it to dominate games. But it has lost that a bit with the transitional period accommodating Nunez as well as injuries to others, and just not having the right personnel and legs in midfield. Other teams also aren’t afraid to have a go at us now. Plus others just haven’t performed well. So it’s a team in decline/transition.
Whilst we all know the general sell to buy model of the club, it was still a major mistake not to address the midfield earlier instead of panicking at the last minute bringing in another injury prone midfielder. So my beef is more with the transfer side of things and I’m afraid Klopp has to take some responsibility here as he insisted for a lot of the window that we didn’t need a midfielder, then later admitting he was wrong.

I’m not necessarily writing him off Ed, just think it’s going to be a big struggle for him given the expectations and budget spent. There’s a lot of talk about a long term project but it’s pie in the sky if Chelsea don’t at least maintain their CL status. As for Arteta, Arsenal had been somewhat adrift for quite a few years before he came in and Wenger had established the club as one which developed young players into stars as opposed to a big club having to deliver straight away, so a long-term project was a much more feasible proposition. Also it is often forgotten that Arteta did win a trophy in his first season when he wasn’t expected to which also helped his cause.

Nil, to answer your question of where next for Potter at Brighton – I think such managers need a “bridge the gap” club, wherever that may be. They’re probably better going abroad to a CL club, Dortmund being a good example, where there is that culture still of developing outstanding young players rather than instantly dealing with big budgets/egos to deliver success relatively quickly. Once you’ve then gained success more organically that way and started dealing with bigger players, you then have the tools to deliver at bigger clubs.

Potter at Chelsea. Never understand why clubs who have been in and around the top in their recent history almost deliberately try to reinvent the wheel and be over clever by suddenly choosing a long term approach, the classic case being Moyes at Utd who lasted 10 months into a 6 year contract. Expectation is going to be instantly high because of Chelsea’s recent success and stature which inevitably puts that manager under huge pressure in dealing with that and the stature of a much bigger dressing room. There’s a time and a place for Potter at Chelsea. Just not sure this was it.

The World Cup gives ample time for a takeover at Liverpool, who will then spend big in January and get the title sown up by March. Sorted.

Yes I think Simon Jordan said similar regarding it potentially being new American owners like what happened at Chelsea. Also the dollar is currently very strong vs the pound.

Yeh maybe the headlines are not quite in tune with the statement, though either way, it could be the start of a withdrawal from the club.
