Wouldn’t say there’s a stand out team really bar France maybe. Maybe England do have a chance, though I think it would probably be France vs England in the quarters the way the draw is set up.

So Japan lose to Costa Rica but beat Spain & Germany and finish group winners.

I think although the bottom of the ball was over the line they’ve probably judged it was still overhanging from the top down view.

Bizarre that the ball did look out of play for the Japan goal yet VAR gave it.

In a VAR room full of monitors, none of the VAR referees seem to see the big picture.

Yeh there feels something very rounded about that US side. Just perhaps lacking a touch of quality here and there, though Pulisic very good.

Wales have been poor. They’ve had one good half of football vs the US. Wouldn’t judge England too greatly tonight.

PS
Have our great refs had a game yet?Anthony Taylor refereed the South Korea vs Ghana match the other day. The South Koreans were furious he didn’t let them take a corner in the last minute as he blew the full time whistle.

I completely understand why VAR make these decisions. First you analyse in slow mo, which makes everything look worse. Second the ball clearly hit his hand and significantly diverted the ball when as Ed says, it was going to go through to a very good opportunity and again that makes it look more “unfair” to the attacking team.
Just to be clear, I’m not agreeing with this, just explaining the climate these decisions get made in which gets lost from the reality of it all on the actual pitch. Don’t forget – looking at a monitor in a closed room inevitability divorces you from the reality of the game because you’re only focused on looking for signs of an offence rather than the big picture. It’s like a form of tunnel vision.
And then few refs seem to want to go against VAR. So we are where we are with it.

And then thereโs the crosses or corners that donโt even beat the first man Sean.
Brazil should have taken Bobby. Still a clever player that can find a goal.

Seems very little consistency in this tournament with the second round of games in terms of trying to place where teams are at with some teams looking good in one game but then not the next or vice versa. Does go to show how big a factor psychology is in the game with teams either getting too comfortable after a good performance or having to react to a poor performance in the previous game. You see it obviously in the league as well but are seeing it all play out in a clear snap shot in this world cup over a short space of time.
This is what ultimately separates the better managers – those who keep their teams focus sharp in every game rather than relying on psychological factors from short term effects or results on how their teams perform.

Lovely arrowed goal by Messi. Only one narrow path/trajectory available to score that and he found it.

Think it was HH that made the point about Mount Sean, but I also agree that’s probably why he’s in the team.

You can make the argument that after the big win against Iran, the team didnโt have to come out storming out the blocks. Also the opposition offered a different proposition. But itโs ultimately down to the manager to prepare for all that. He didnโt and instead praised us for โcontrolling the game from the backโโฆwhatever that meant.

Indeed HH, we can talk about bringing on Foden but the fundamental problem is Mr. Gareth “Safe” Southgate. I know it could be argued that playing such a way is the best way of getting us as far as we can and then hoping for a bit of luck but unless there are no standout teams like the case of Greece winning in 2004, it’s not going to happen.

He’s awful. Should have gone after the nations league debacle.

Probably why we should have freshened up the starting XI.

Penalty may be a bit harsh, but just on another point – it’s refreshing to see a referee being such an authority on the pitch. Just with that scuffle then, the referee was on it straight away and showed them who’s boss. Be nice to see that in the premier league once in a while.
