The midfield is the biggest issue at Liverpool. No depth, and the regulars are injury prone and getting older or declining. I still can’t work out why, after clearing being interested in Tchouameni, the club didn’t identity an alternative and then panicked at the last minute by brining in Melo, another injury prone midfielder. That’s not how a top club should be operating.

I wouldnβt write Nunez off just yet. Obviously a big problem is the fee we paid for him – you should be getting something close to the finished article for that money, not somebody quite as raw as he seems to be. Weβll see where we are at the end of the season with him.
I do think now though looking back we probably had a rush of blood to the head in signing him, thinking we had to replace Mane and getting a bit caught up in his performances against us for Benfica, which is probably what pushed us over the line in getting him.

Nunez so raw still, finishing awful tonight. Midfield still the obvious weakness. De Bruyne outstanding tonight.

Boys have done well to weather that initial storm and come back. Nunez should have done better with that chance at the end. Not a bad game. City still favourites.

Yeh, huge pressure finally off Messi now. He lit up this tournament and deserves that. Huge respect for Mbappe too, mentally on another level with all those penalties.

Well boys, as I said on page 10 of this thread after Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia.

Just can’t write the French off in this world cup. They’ve got so much individual quality.

France up in no time. They just have top quality in their side. The way our media keeps saying we outplayed France is rather embarrassing. We should be asking why we aren’t producing the same quality.

England’s problems have always been cultural ones. We may well have some good players, but our media is still guilty of overhyping them. As better as we were in the second half last night, and as better our xG stats were, we still couldn’t score from open play. On deeper reflection, the match just felt like a cup tie between a top side not at their best (France) and a lesser side with some very good players and fight, but not just lacking top quality here and there (England). And France’s quality in Tchouameni, Griezmann & Giroud was ultimately the difference.

Adlab, you just can’t believe nobody in this England set up has managed the penalty procedures better and thought more about it given how often we have them. From the Euro final when we threw on 2 non warmed up players, to today when you have clubmates involved in 2 penalties. It’s fine margins but that’s where you win and lose. Just a little bit more thinking was involved.

Indeed Nine, particularly with Loris and Kane knowing each other so well.
