It is embarrassing Sean. And I think Southgate basically being light hearted about it in the post match interview with a kind of “Oh God, what are we like?” vibe is even more embarrassing.

You could add on another 2 weeks of time. It wouldn’t make any difference. At least Southgate will be gone. How he’s lasted 8 years is beyond me.

I think the system is the biggest problem. I think we should be playing more with 3 proper midfielders, and then 3 attackers. The 3 of Saka, Bellingham & Foden look like they’re having to partly play as midfielders hence why I don’t think they’re making runs and they keep running back deeper towards the midfield to pick up the ball. Play with more midfielders then give the attackers the freedom and license to drive forward as they should be doing – making runs and stretching the play.

Boy England have been abysmal for the whole tournament. They just don’t look like a team and have no flow, fight or plan to them whatsoever.

I just think Southgate is, like some of his predecessors, guilty of trying to squeeze all the best players into the same team. I think in the first two games, Rice was the only recognised proper midfielder in the whole team! It’s just ridiculous. All the players to the side of him or in front of him were basically attacking/winger type players. And because of Kane, all these wingers/attackers had to sit a bit deeper so they struggle to stretch the play up top. Just play the most effective team! If that means dropping some big names, so be it! It’s as though the strategy from Soutgate is to be conservative, and then telling the attacking players to make something happen from where they are. And then we wonder why we aren’t very fluid.

When will the country realise that just because we have some world class players in the team it doesn’t mean the overall team will be world class. We lack togetherness, we still fall into the trap of playing the best XI vs the best team and we lack a charismatic manager to instill a positivity, fight and passion. (I actually can’t believe Southgate is still manager). That said I’ve always thought the reasons for England’s continual failures are cultural. I think we’re a very individualistic culture that puts the emphasis on praising the individual and putting them on pedestals rather than the collective. England failing at tournaments is almost as guaranteed as night following day.

Nil, I find punditry increasingly conformist, exacerbated I think by the host asking them leading questions to answer them in the way they want them to. Indeed I think there’s now more of an emphasis on positivity, banter and laughs than proper analysis. It feels more and more like we’re in an idiocracy.

Just the same old England for me. The usual over hype before the tournament begins and then a performance that looked average for a lot of the game. We still look like we lack that togetherness and passion you see in the other big European teams. We were very casual in possession too many times. And whilst we have some good attacking players, I’m still not convinced about us at the back. And then there’s Gareth Southgate. In some ways England reminded me of Liverpool last season – some very good attacking play but unable to control games and too loose in possession.

The only logic behind Kompany going to Bayern I can think of is that they still see him as a good coach but one who simply didn’t have the players to execute it all at Burnley in the Premier league. Put it this way, if you put Guardiola in charge of Burnley he might well struggle too even if he is the best footballing coach there is. But if you put Klopp in charge of Burnley he’d most probably do better because he’d lift all the players spirits with his man management. However that maybe flips over when both managers are at the top clubs with Guardiola being a more balanced manager at the elite levels with elite players who are able to fully execute his football.
