30th January 2023 at 5:17 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203458Sean, if Diaz was ManΓ©’s replacement, why blow all that money on Nunez? In any case, Diaz is not a 25 goal a season winger which is what ManΓ© was. It looks more that ManΓ© has been replaced by Diaz AND Nunez (winger + goalscorer) which has cost us about Β£100 million gross. And Nunez is going to take some time to come good if he is going to.
As I said on the other thread, our best signings under Klopp mostly had previous experience in the premier league and because of that most of them hit the ground running. But we seem to have abandoned that more recently.

30th January 2023 at 2:11 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203453Ed, I doubt City saw Arsenal as a threat. That could backfire this season.

30th January 2023 at 1:45 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203448If City feel they have enough players there, and they can offload an unhappy player now and potentially cash in in the summer, why not? City seem very good at managing and keeping their squad fresh. Eyebrows were arguably raised when Sane and Sterling left. Didn’t Bernardo nearly leave too? But no player is bigger than the club. Compare to Liverpool where we seem to cling on to players for too long or when a player like ManΓ© left, it is my opinion that it gave us a rush of blood to the head to blow big bucks on Nunez. In other words, ManΓ©’s replacement should have arrived *before* ManΓ© left, not after.

As I say nil, I think it’s the classic case of a club reaching the top and then forgetting the methods that got them there.

The question you have to ask though nil – when the club were developing under Klopp in those first 3 years – would they have spent that fee on Nunez? Our successful signings in those early years mainly had premier league experience: Salah, ManΓ©, Jota, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum. If you are bringing in players without the league experience you need to be very sure about them. In my opinion I think we started throwing caution to the wind on our signings.

As threeps says, this isn’t about money. I personally think this is the classic case of a club who reached the top and then got a bit drunk on the success and forgot the methods that got them there. I’m not writing Nunez off yet, but to spend that much money on someone so raw to me reeked of the club almost trying to make a statement by buying “hot property” in Europe whilst neglecting other positions. Gakpo also currently looks a long way off imo. And even if you take the position that Thiago is our best midfielder, we’re now relying on yet another older player liable to injuries in midfield. He wasn’t bought with the future in mind.
To echo what Ed says, it can take years to build something. But it can be undone in an afternoon.

22nd January 2023 at 3:37 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 21 – All Good Games :-) #203207Well if Utd get a result today, the title race is absolutely blown open with City to still play Arsenal twice.

19th January 2023 at 9:53 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 20 – Manchester and London Derby #203125Agreed Lucky. Bizarrely I think he goes under the radar but he’s such a great player. Always pops up with important goals.

17th January 2023 at 10:14 pm in reply to: FA CUP 2023 – Third Round Ties – Weekend Football #203055Agree Sean. We’ve been desperate for someone like Bajectic. Very good on the ball and shielding it too. Giving the ball away too easily been a big problem this season.

Know he had a loose pass or two, but do like Bajcetic. By far better him there in midfield than Elliot, who as we see, is better further up.

Iβd actually argue several of those players are better suited in those positions. Elliot I think is better further up the pitch. Bajectic at least deserves a go in midfield again.

14th January 2023 at 6:52 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 20 – Manchester and London Derby #202936It’s not so much I’m calling for his head Sean, it’s more what state his head is in and whether the players are now fully wity him or the whole thing is just getting tired. It can just happen. Like you, I’d like to think it’s salvageable, but circumstances may say otherwise.
