Itโ€™s not to say itโ€™s a set rule

No indeed not nil, but there is a correlation I think nonetheless. It’s also the fact that many of these players are so young now, so even if they do come good, you may lose several years developing them. If you are to buy abroad, I think character has to be a big factor. I’ve heard people say for example players don’t generally travel well from the Dutch league, yet we bought Suarez from Holland and he was one of our best ever players because first and foremost, he had that street fighter attitude about him.

As I recently said about the recent Liverpool signings, they’ve never played in the Premier league so players like Gakpo and Nunez haven’t hit the ground running. This contrasts with our earlier signings like Van Dijk, Mane, Wijnaldum, Robertson, etc, who all had previous Premier league experience and so they all pretty much hit the ground running and proved successful.

The concern for Chelsea is I don’t think several of their recent signings have played in this league so that does increase the risk. Doesn’t mean they won’t work out and obviously there are several factors that dictate the success of a player, but generally speaking I think the top clubs have historically tended to spend big on players already in the league to have that assurance. With FFP however, maybe that is changing with clubs now spending big on young players from abroad which in turn adds to the inflation. I just worry clubs are now trying to be too clever.

In recent months Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd have all spent big on young players from abroad with no previous premier-league experience and already several of those haven’t exactly set the world alight for the money paid granted it’s still early days. Again you look at the Arsenal signings that have helped take them off more recently, Jesus and Zinchenko, again players who’ve already played in the league.

So it could be that FFP causes clubs to start wasting more money than ever.

Benfica could make up to nearly ยฃ200 million from Liverpool & Chelsea over the last 6 months.

Sean, if Diaz was Manรฉ’s replacement, why blow all that money on Nunez? In any case, Diaz is not a 25 goal a season winger which is what Manรฉ was. It looks more that Manรฉ has been replaced by Diaz AND Nunez (winger + goalscorer) which has cost us about ยฃ100 million gross. And Nunez is going to take some time to come good if he is going to.

As I said on the other thread, our best signings under Klopp mostly had previous experience in the premier league and because of that most of them hit the ground running. But we seem to have abandoned that more recently.

Ed, I doubt City saw Arsenal as a threat. That could backfire this season.

If City feel they have enough players there, and they can offload an unhappy player now and potentially cash in in the summer, why not? City seem very good at managing and keeping their squad fresh. Eyebrows were arguably raised when Sane and Sterling left. Didn’t Bernardo nearly leave too? But no player is bigger than the club. Compare to Liverpool where we seem to cling on to players for too long or when a player like Manรฉ left, it is my opinion that it gave us a rush of blood to the head to blow big bucks on Nunez. In other words, Manรฉ’s replacement should have arrived *before* Manรฉ left, not after.

As I say nil, I think it’s the classic case of a club reaching the top and then forgetting the methods that got them there.

The question you have to ask though nil – when the club were developing under Klopp in those first 3 years – would they have spent that fee on Nunez? Our successful signings in those early years mainly had premier league experience: Salah, Manรฉ, Jota, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum. If you are bringing in players without the league experience you need to be very sure about them. In my opinion I think we started throwing caution to the wind on our signings.

As threeps says, this isn’t about money. I personally think this is the classic case of a club who reached the top and then got a bit drunk on the success and forgot the methods that got them there. I’m not writing Nunez off yet, but to spend that much money on someone so raw to me reeked of the club almost trying to make a statement by buying “hot property” in Europe whilst neglecting other positions. Gakpo also currently looks a long way off imo. And even if you take the position that Thiago is our best midfielder, we’re now relying on yet another older player liable to injuries in midfield. He wasn’t bought with the future in mind.

To echo what Ed says, it can take years to build something. But it can be undone in an afternoon.

Agree Sean. We’ve been desperate for someone like Bajectic. Very good on the ball and shielding it too. Giving the ball away too easily been a big problem this season.
