Yes but the top clubs also tend to instil managers with a strong mentality and will tend to have more effective transfer teams.

I’m not necessarily claiming Spurs are a sleeping giant. I just think there is more to success than wage bill. Even bigger clubs with greater financial clout who have success, can still blow a lot of their money. I mean look at Sancho & Antony at Man Utd for a combined fee of nearly Β£150 million. Have they really driven the club to success or could they have found several better players for less? But they can live with that because of the drive of the manager and mentality of the club.

But that would be my point Lucky, even in those rare circumstances of that 2015/16 season, Spurs still couldn’t win the title and were beaten to it by a side previously fighting relegation. It’s more than wage bill setting them back. It’s mentality. Man Utd & Arsenal have been in the doldrums for some time but we can see how things can change – yes money has helped of course, but it’s the mentality that Arteta & Ten Hag have instilled in all aspects of the club that has been the key factor for me. Ditto Klopp at Liverpool.

The argument about investment and success at Spurs was somewhat blown out the water when Leicester beat them to the title some years ago. We know Levy seems to like to run a tight ship and that seems to be the overall project. And when things start to slide a bit again, the manager is changed. They have to change the culture/mentality at the club, as well as the quality of their recruitment strategy. And then add the right manager and patience. It’s actually not that difficult.

Well that’s the first part done. Surely odds on now that Nagelsmann will take charge in the summer?

Never realised Nagelsmann is only 35!

Also being reported Nagelsmann’s girlfriend, a reporter at Bild, caused trust issues in the dressing room.

Thing is with the range of different managers Spurs have had from Poch to Mourinho, neither won a trophy. It may just *feel* better with someone like Poch who perhaps played a more exciting brand of football, but have the root problems changed? As Keane has said over the years, there is something in the DNA of the club that keeps flattering to deceive. If you look back to when they last won a trophy under Ramos in 2008, they never kicked on from it. So there is a cultural problem there. So you can see the logic on the surface of things with Levy installing Mourinho & Conte – league winning managers to try and install a winning mentality, though they were never the right fit for me – they needed to be at established clubs. This cultural problem is going to take some time to change and there’s a press conference from Poch when he was at Spurs actually spelling out this problem that the club needed to attract players to the club to actually win trophies, though I was never fully convinced of Poch to be honest. If you look at Arteta at Arsenal, yes, he’s obviously got something about him – but the most important part I suspect is that he’s changed the culture of that club and made brave decisions to get rid of some players and identified the right ones with the right mentality to come in. Whereas with Poch again or potentially Nagelsmann, I just think it’s going to be rinse and repeat with Spurs, i.e. playing nice entertaining football, but no trophies to show for it. That’s the DNA they have to change. And it can’t just be solved by more money.

So Palace go back to Hodgson. And now Spurs could turn back to a former manager. Like the film industry going back to remaking old films or sequels. They reach back for the comfort of the tried and tested.

Yeh, like Mourinho at Man Utd, it’s never a good sign when the manager’s permanently living in a hotel.

Ed, I’m afraid you take away either the Anfield crowd or the press, and we lose a lot of our edge. Reading about Klopps time at Dortmund and early time at Liverpool, it was all about the press. Winning the ball high up and forcing mistakes. In fact, in the early training sessions at Liverpool, the players got *too* committed and started flying in with challenges and Klopp had to calm some of them down. But over the years we transitioned into more of a patient possession team with the occasional maybe more intelligent pressing at the right time. For the times we are more of a possession team, maybe away from home, I do think the loss of ManΓ© has been significant because his pace really stretched the opposition. Our lack of control/pace in midfield also a problem.

One question for Klopp, given our vulnerabilities at the moment, why not keep the same line up for a few weeks? Don’t think the changes help, though they obviously should have done better.
