Yup…nothing certain yet. Can’t see Chelsea just walking away easily.

Well this has completely come out of the blue. But looking at our transfer history, the club does sometimes have rushes of blood to the head when it has to act to quickly to replace someone, be it with Carroll for Torres, Nunez for Mane. This looks a good fit. Saudi Arabia maybe done us a huge favour here as I don’t think this happens if they didn’t take Henderson & Fabinho off us. We were obviously concerned up until this point, but it looks like those players leaving has given us the kick we needed to get this done.

Yeh I really didn’t know where to place Newcastle. They could have a sort of second season syndrome exacerbated by CL congestion. At the same time I really rate Eddie Howe as a coach – he may have raised expectations which could put pressure on him – but to have them so solid so quickly and had the impact he’s had, I think they should still have a solid season.
If Burnley have a couple of good seasons, that could obviously pave the way for the City job for Kompany.
As for us, if we don’t bring in anyone else, we’re obviously going to have a difficult season. But if today’s rumours are true, God alone knows what’s going to happen. Need to almost blank everything out until the last day of the month and see who we’ve got (or not got) when the window’s closed.

Yeh they’re a top striker away from going up a level. My reservations with Poch are that I think he makes teams very solid but I dont think they play off the cuff enough up top.
In other news De Gea may finally get that move to Real Madrid…

We are still a “moneyball” club. We keep trying to kid ourselves we aren’t and we’ll change (myself included) but we’re going to have to accept it.

We seem to be like a person who goes to an auction with a set limit, who simply won’t go over that limit at any cost, and if they come back empty handed, they pat themselves on the back praising themselves how they stuck to their guns. I’m afraid that’s how we operate. We saw a similar thing with Salah when he moved to Chelsea rather than us. You might say we had the last laugh in that, but given our current predicament in midfield, I’m not sure we have such a luxury this time.
What I think this points to then is that losing Henderson & Fabinho at the same time has left us like a rabbit in the headlights and the only player we had properly scouted in this department was one for the future, i.e. Lavia, and as I say, we simply won’t go over our limits to push it because he’s not yet an established experienced player.

Have to say, I think I’m with Pep & Varane on this (though I do wonder if Pep & Arteta would have said the opposite if the result had been opposite & City had scored late on π).
There is already power given to the referees if a player is wasting time. At the same time, players need to have the odd breather here and there. I think it’s another case of the bureaucrats in the game looking purely at the stats of “ball in play game time” and trying to make everything “right” again, without the context of reality. This is going to put more strain on the players even if it does potentially make for more exciting ends to games – but given entertainment/excitement is the name of the game, I suspect it will be here to stay.

Was just going to say Lucky. Could put a strain on the concentration levels of the players if games are now going to be this long!

Agree Adlab, as I say, you still have the best spine in the league which is the most important thing. I’m sure there’ll be a few more in too. Pep looks as relaxed as ever.

I still think City have the strongest spine in the league. Mahrez & Gundogan leaving undoubtedly weakens them, but they still have have lot of quality in there and the best manager in the world.

I think Klopp looks tired. In his last days at Dortmund, the press put it to him whether the team had been “found out” with teams now adapting more to them I think. Klopp refuted this, saying it was up to the players to be better and do what they need to. And I just see a similar pattern. Against Bayern, Klopp bemoaned the poor reacting of Matip & Trent. This, just over a week before the season starts? These are defenders he’s been working with for years. I think our midfield is arguably in worse shape now than last season. We have only one experienced all round midfielder in MacAllister. Bajecitic is very young and inexperienced. Lavia is only 19 if he comes. Thiago can pick up injuries. And the other midfielders are more attack minded. I think we have major problems in midfield and defence regardless whether Lavia comes in or not. Also Klopp seemed to react to a fan asking for an autograph in a clip I saw, saying he “had to hold the f****** shirt”. OK, he maybe had a long day, I’m not crucifying him for it, but I think its another sign that all is not well. Would he have said such a thing in his first season or two?
So I think we have 2 big problems. I think we have a manager coming to the natural end of a cycle. And the club itself is lacking significant leadership in its recruitment strategy.

It is Sean. I increasingly think Klopp will leave the club this coming season, not just over the recruitment. I just think the jig is up with the Klopp era. Reading through his end times at Dortmund, I think there are several parallels.
