Wowsers…

The infuriating thing is, at the top end of the pitch, we’re still a very good side. But behind that, we’re lacking quite a bit. It wouldn’t take that much to make everything right.

Could get out of jail here.

Bare minimum in the transfer window again (assuming no late moves). Midfield insufficiently reformed. Defence now being left to rot. If Salah leaves that will be the icing on the cake of our turmoil.

Think I might be subbing Trent pretty quickly.

After just 3 games, only one team still has a 100% win record…Man City.

You do look daft if you almost completely control possession of the ball but still end up losing by a few. I seem to remember a quote I think from Ferguson from many years ago that made me laugh – something I think like how “you can play chess for 10 hours and still lose.”

Bizarre thing is, he thought telling him to go to the screen would have given him more grief?

Oof. Everton have lost their first 3 games. No improvement on the horizon.

Is there a pattern now emerging with all this ball playing from the back that the smaller teams just aren’t afraid anymore of the bigger teams and if you’re aggressive against them, you’ll reap the rewards easily. Liverpool were close to being 2 down at Bournemouth early on last week.

Even if Utd come back, there are obviously big concerns at the club. Just so casual at times. Also De Gea was arguably one of their best players in recent years so to ditch him in favour of a more ball playing keeper – that has to work quickly or else you’re going to put big pressure on yourself.

Rsgarding the debate about the importance of managers, I still think they ultimately dictate the direction of a football club. Yes the right recruitment is of course vital, but it takes a good manager to galvanise the whole thing and create positivity. When there is seamless success between managers you look at Ranieri at Leicester and there’s no doubt he took advantage of the qualities instilled by the previous manager, even if he still of course added his own qualities to it. You could probably say the same with De Zerbi following Potter. The things these follow on appointments have is there was already a good spirit in the team when the new man came in.

I somewhat agree Banjo, itโs all about the collective positivity with a manager at a club and I sort of see a parallel with Rodgers when he came to Liverpool. Theyโll be hiccups but players love to have that positive clear identity. Just a shame you lost Kane. Any more talk of potential replacements?
As for Man Utd, Iโm not surprised to see them start as they have. They still look weak at the back and short up front and I just donโt think Ten Hag is having a significant impact on them. Had Liverpool & Chelsea had strong seasons last season, they could easily have finished 5th or 6th. Unless Hรธjlund really has a flyer, I donโt see much changing for them.
As for Chelsea, again, whilst Pochโs strength is undoubtedly making a team solid and tactically sound, I just donโt think Pochโs Spurs ever played off the cuff enough at the top end of the pitch to really make inroads at the top of the table. And given Chelsea lack front players/strikers, Iโd still worry about them here.

But in that case is there not an argument that given the type of football Ten Hag plays he needs top top quality to make it work well in this league. He doesn’t seem to me to be a galvaniser in the way Postecoglou or Klopp seem to be who could make a team better than the sum of its parts.

Well yes I agree Ed. Ten Hag is effectively seeming to be chief scout, Head coach and the rest all in one. But you’ve got to have some top quality in there and the right DoF in to bring the right top players in.

Utd should be buying superstars. Instead they seem to be trying to build a nice technical team as far as I can see.

Utd just have no wow factor for me, or wow player for them. No one to really get them out of jail in a game. Seems to me like Ten Hag is just trying to build a nice technical team but theres not enough razzmatazz in it to help them build confidence and momentum. We’ll see how Hรธjlund goes on, but even if he does well, not sure it’ll still be enough.
