Sorry but I think that’s a ridiculous decision. Is the PSG defender supposed to jump, at speed, to block a shot with his hands by his side?? VAR = Pandoras Box.

I’d just add that granted the poor form/trust Klopp has with some of these players which is partly causing Klopp to be more cautious, I think he’s also drifting into playing it safe more because he is under more pressure and is getting more paranoid about losing rather than going for the win – particularly away from home.

Nine, Klopp has spent a lot of money – more than any other Liverpool manager. This continual playing of the underdog line is thus starting to wear a bit thin. He needs a trophy and soon.

Nil, good counter argument, and all good and fair points. The team has undoubtedly improved on last season in terms of points and there is much to be positive about in that sense. And Klopp has certainly adapted by playing in a less gung-ho fashion to conserve energy. The frustrating thing is, had Keita really delivered this season, we’d probably now be quite a few points clear at the top. So from that perspective it’s hard to criticise Klopp and the weaker squad depth he has to work with vs City this season.

But when you’re going for the title the title is won in the fine margins – so everything is put under the microscope. And this is where managers have to earn their stripes and find ways in difficult circumstances to win. Klopp may be being let down by some of his players but he’s still spent a lot of money and he’s got to find ways to get them on top again. That’s his job and the one he’s being paid a fortune for. And moaning about the wind and saying “we’re just enjoying the ride and seeing where we end up” I don’t think will wash particularly well with the fans.

One can sympathise with Klopp having the problems in midfield and Keita not delivering but for me his attitude is, shall we say, questionable. As I said he came off the pitch yesterday looking calm and was smiling. And he keeps banging on about just “enjoying the ride and seeing where we end up.” Could you imagine a Fergie or Mourinho doing that in a title charging season? Me neither. (If we were a huge outsider then I could perhaps understand it but he’s spent a fortune over the recent year and thus there is a reasonable expectation). Now we may still have a chance this season but it will be more dependent on Citys struggles than our strengths. And that’s disappointing to say the least. If he wins all this will be forgotten and forgiven. If not, how safe is his future? That will mean he’d have lost his last 7 trophy opportunities in a row. But cue Klopp smiling in that instance saying “oh well, we had some fun on the ride didn’t we!” Would that wash with the club and fans??

Sean, I think both teams will continue to drop points. But admittedly we need to stop dropping them sooner rather than later. Fixtures generally kinder now though and our 2 remaining big games are at home, where we’re much stronger. Plus fixtures will start piling up for City.

Adlab, I think the title race is still wide open. I’m just frustrated that we’re not capitalising and thus putting ourselves under more pressure. This has got all the hallmarks of the 2011/12 season. And interestingly, after 29 games that season, City were just one point behind Utd with an almost identical points tally (70 pts to 69 pts). And we all know how that season ended.

Sean, just don’t think he trusts the other options in midfield/attack. Don’t get why he didn’t look to find a solution in the recent window. We’re in title race for crying out loud. And Klopp comes off smiling and shrugging saying “oh well, I’m proud of the way we fought” saying “let’s just see where we end up.” Just no ruthlessness there whatsoever.

HH, just don’t think he trusts Keita. Only explanation I can think of. I agree the midfield is a problem. As I said just 6 league goals between them and most were set pieces. Just dire.

In 13/14 Liverpool’s defence let down their attack and thus they didn’t win.

Liverpool’s general midfield has scored just 6 league goals this season, and I think most of those were from set plays and not from open play. That’s just abysmal. *And it’s puts too much pressure on the front 3.

Agree Ed, I think the circumstances/environment have probably now taken over everything and hence he’ll get the job. Allegri *may* be the better bet, but if he came in the summer and had a stuttering start, the pressure would then ramp up considerably, particularly after you’d just disposed of someone doing a good job.

Just to follow on from Nine, Man Utd actually didn’t have that bad a team/squad. The main problem was a manager whose philosophy didn’t match the personnel he had (which begs the question why was he given a lengthy contract last season). Would it be too simplistic to say that all Ole has done is to play players where they should have been played? It’s a bit like putting the wrong fuel in a car. But everything is now tuned in properly. Two big questions remain then. When things start getting tough, does Ole command enough authority in the dressing room? And how strong is he tactically? Those will dictate whether he lasts a long time. And it’s far to early to answer those questions.

When Dalglish took over from Hodgson at Liverpool, there was a very similar effect. Old player comes in – fans love him, he lifts things by playing a bolder style of play and wins the League Cup a year later (our last piece of silverware!), as well as finishing runners up in the FA Cup. So you look at that and think it was very much the right decision. Yet he was sacked just a few months later with the team finishing 8th in the league. It’s a very interesting and almost endless discussion as to what would have happened had the club kept Dalglish and whether the sacking was the right decision or not. I’ve often pondered on it and have changed my mind several times over it because there are several different factors to consider (and we actually went backwards defensively under Rodgers no matter how much exciting the football may have been later on). But my overriding thought at the time (and still is now) was that tactically speaking, I thought he wasn’t quite good enough. And I think that was what cost him. And interestingly that’s what also cost Rodgers – but under Rodgers I think there was a clearer philosophy/identity which was better understood by the players and hence he did better (in the league anyway, which is a better measure of judgement).

So without knowing whether Ole has got these other qualities is not yet clear and the board will simply have to wait and see. Or do they take a bold decision to bring in a more proven/established name? It’s all about having good judgement and the conviction to go along with it. The safe, more popular decision will be to keep Ole. Doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the best decision.

They need to put Neville & Carragher permanently together again on MNF. They push each other and they’re the better for it. Not a fan of this change every week – just because the new guest each week may be interesting, certainly doesn’t mean their analysis and punditry is.

Sean, when you’re going for the title every small detail and fault will come under the microscope because it is in the finer margins that teams win leagues and unfortunately for us, as well as we have done, we haven’t capitalised in the moments we needed to. Now yes we’re still top, but without that authority on the pitch we are struggling to pull away. This is more of an observation than a criticism.

Sean, a few thoughts. Yes we were good last night. But then it begs the question, why were we poor at Old Trafford, particularly up top? Ok, they were very different games in terms of opposition and location (home/away), and you could understand us being a bit more cautious at Old Trafford, particularly in the early part of the game. But when Man Utd made all their changes, there was a big opportunity there we couldn’t take. We seemed to remain in our somewhat cautious state and nobody on the pitch seemed to identify the opportunity. So I’m more reserved and cautious about the idea that we’re now suddenly “back to our best”. All this has to be contextualised. Yes we’ve still generally had a very good season so far. But you need to be very good across the board and in all types of situations. And in quite a few of those situations, particularly away from home, we have lacked that leadership to identify the moments in a game when we need to be bolder and thus seize the opportunity.
