Mav, JC was talking more about if Liverpool made the semis, Klopp would prioritise the league.

Mav, that’s easier said than done. To rest players in a CL semi final?? I struggle to see it. That’s the big problem with the CL for weaker clubs – it is a huge distraction that is impossible to resist.

Threeps, at least he shows more endeavour than some of our midfielders have done.

Mak, Matip ain’t done a bad job in recent months. And I do enjoy his dribbling surges into midfield/attack.

I would be very surprised if one of Spurs/Man Utd don’t make the top 4 this season. It’s togetherness and fight that you need at this stage. And those two have it more than the others.

Good to see Keita with a smile on his face tonight.

Carragher had some interesting ideas some years ago about trying to make every game mean something, in the CL, not that this would ever happen now.

I’d be curious to know what the latest viewing figure estimates are for the CL in this country. They were reportedly significantly down a few years back after BT bought the rights, and I can’t imagine they’ve got much better. Another crazy situation where the clubs, managers, players, governing bodies, etc, get richer on the gravy train, but the fans get poorer.
I see the Bayern chairman now bemoaning such things. Will anybody listen? Or is everyone too busy counting their money?

Agree Nil, but it’s hard to see how that ever resolves itself and whether the fans voices will ever be heard because they’ll still ultimately support the club no matter what, so the owners have them over a barrel.
Ed, it doesn’t say much of his ambition does it? In some ways you look at why Moyes failed at Utd, and whilst he may never have been a big success, I don’t think it helped that he got far too comfortable at Everton, and he never showed any ambition to leave and try another club (even if he had to go abroad). His stock remained pretty high in the media though. But by the time he did get a big job, it was so out his comfort zone and so alien to him, he was like a fish out of water. And when he did go abroad and try and restart his career, it was far too late. He’s just completely fizzled out.

In many ways, Poch is a victim of his job description – i.e. keep finishing top 4 to make money. That’s what keeps Daniel Levy happy anyway. But then, Poch can’t really complain given that he signed a long lucrative five year contract last summer knowing there was still going to be limited money to spend in the future, yet he still happily signed and made it difficult to move on because of the hefty buy out clause. Levy is happy because he thinks he’ll be like Wenger and help keep earning the top 4 revenues. And Poch has a long lucrative contract. Money. Money, money, money. That’s what success is now to clubs, chairmen, managers and players. But not fans.

Steveo, yes I should have made that caveat! Just makes that announcement ever more baffling. There’s generally more of an expectation now with Ole.

Officially announcing Ole as permanent manager has actually increased the pressure on him, generally speaking.
However, the one positive with facing Barca is that they’ll be no great expectation to beat them, so the games are effectively a free hit, which will suit Ole down to the ground because the pressure is off him again which partly helped his recent successes.

i.e. Wolves in 7th, are as close to the relegation zone as they are to Chelsea, in 6th.

After the latest round of games, there is now a 16 point gap between 1st & 3rd spots, and a 16 point gap between the top 6 and the rest (6th and 7th). And there is a 16 point gap between 7th and 18th spots (the relegation zone). The gap between the top 6 and the rest continues to widen.

I think the thing about Keita was that because of the way he played (and the similarity of the system at Leipzig), there was not only a big expectation that he’d settle quickly but also that he’d be a real leader and match winner. But it actually seems that he’s quite a shy lad and not that kind of personality that he was perhaps billed up to be. That could still change next season if he better settles, but boy we could have done with him turning up this year.

The way I see the story of the title race this season is that it was basically Liverpool’s to lose. They are the team that were ultimately setting the pace and benchmark this season. Then they lost at City, and it dealt a big psychological blow to them that they’ve only just started to recover from. I see City as the opportunists this year – they are actually 7 points down on this season from the same point last season, but have been galvanised since they’ve smelt the opportunity to overtake Liverpool. Now the momentum is pretty much equal between them because the race is completely wide open. As I’ve said before I actually think it suits Klopp to be chasing rather than holding on (indeed a lot of the draws came about because I don’t think Klopp knew how to handle being top and whether to stick or twist). It also suits his underdog type demeanour. But it’s pretty much impossible to call at the moment, so as Mak alluded to, each result and each significant moment will now be magnified because that’s what will now dictate where the title goes. Moments and momentum shifts.

Mav, the problem would be though the perception of that to outsiders. Solskjaer is still a novice manager in the transfer market and the recruitment/transfer structure will have to develop. It really wouldn’t help you build a team if at the start, one of your best players leaves.
One consolation is that Madrid probably his only main target, and they’ve not much money in the pot after the last few years and are now throwing £500 million at renovating the Bernabeu.

If Pogba did leave, that would be a hell of shockwave for Solskjaer to deal with in the summer.
