The big problem is offside – it does not come under the “clear and obvious error” category – it is an objective provable decision – you are either offside or you’re not. But are very tight offside decisions in the spirit of the game? The recently ruled VAR offside goal by England vs USA in the recent women’s World Cup was basically half a boot offside.

I think a problem for Solksjaer at Man Utd is that by giving the players the freedom to play where they wanted to play, it lost him some control over them because you’ll inevitably lose some player discipline over such things (because you’ve given in to them to some extent). It’s key that Lampard doesn’t fall into this way of thinking. As I said before he needs to have the conviction to play his way, even if it upsets some of the players. That’s when a manager earns his crust by instilling that belief into a player to convince him that this particular way works (especially when they’re not initially convinced).

An appointment made due to circumstances along with a load of hope and idealism. Thus if it does work out, it will be more by accident rather than because of some grand strategy a long time in the making. But accidents can happen!
Apparently Lampard is the “unity” candidate who will bring the club together. However, a key area that will face Lampard is whether he will have the conviction and be given the authority to freeze out players he doesn’t like or is unsure of?? (particularly when he can’t make signings). In that sense there is no such thing as a “unity” candidate – any manager is going to have to upset people at some point, particularly after any honeymoon period. Be interesting watching it play out.

There’s been a Glazers Out campaign recently on social media. Surprised there’s not been more protest than there has been in recent years.

City’s run in: Bournemouth, Watford, Norwich.
Liverpool’s run in: Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle. We’ll need to wrap up the league before then 😉

I think a lot of this discussion is rooted in how much we think FFP is changing the game. Either way, it’s clearly having some impact because without being able to constantly throw money at the situation, Chelsea have undoubtedly had to look to become more sustainable in the way they replace and renew their playing squad. A lot of the old guard from the big spending days are now ageing or moving on. So Chelsea clearly need more of a developer and someone to instil a real togetherness in the team. Allegri may still be that man, but you could sympathise with Chelsea thinking a bit harder this time around (particularly with the transfer ban looming) before they make their decision.

Ed, the dynamic is changing though what with FFP, the transfer ban and the high scoring, high point tallies of attacking managers like Klopp and Guardiola. I think it will be a mammoth task for all the chasing clubs to compete with the top 2 clubs next season, let alone surpass them. Whilst Juve were a very polished and class side under Allegri in the CL last season, I just didn’t think they were ruthless enough in the attacking sense – even with Ronaldo in the team.
I note that Leicester wasted no time in appointing Rodgers – an attacking manager who is good at developing players – and I actually think they may surprise people next season, particularly if they hold on to their players. (He really wasn’t helped by the transfer committee at Liverpool either and that should be borne in mind when judging his time there). I’d be curious to ask Chelsea fans – if Rodgers was now available, would you like him as manager?

Jose is quite selective on the types of players he wants. With Chelsea still facing a transfer embargo, Jose is not really the manager you want at the helm for that.

Rafa has become quite a pragmatic manager too, so will be more prepared to work with what he has. Would Allegri be as flexible or would he demand certain players (that Chelsea can’t currently sign?). Or would he dare risk Lampard? Lots to ponder for Roman, but Rafa seems the logical and safer choice, if albeit an unpopular one.

Sean, we’ve got that aura now of a great side. It reminds me of a team like Bayern at their best under Heynckes – we’re obviously not as swashbuckling as we’ve been – but we’re just so effective – we have a an extremely solid base and we have a lot of variety in the kinds of goals we can score – particularly with the two full backs we have. We never look under pressure.
The Barca game was no doubt the best game this season for us – but my favourite performance was our 3-1 away win at Bayern – it was the performance of champions. Just so effective, cold and ruthless. Scary part, I think we can get quite a lot better.

Special mention to Klopp. Up until recent years I was starting to have a few doubts. But he has developed *massively* as a manager this season. From our game management, tactics and approach, we’re a much more rounded side. And we’re no longer just about the press. He’s learned a lot in a more physical league and identified exactly who who he needed to bring in. And when a change is needed, he doesn’t hang around anymore – he now makes quick effective substitutions that have an immediate impact. Think he’s really gone up several notches. The best adapt. The best find a way.

Liverpool need to score in the next 10-15 mins, or else things will get very nervy indeed.
