Ed, think it’s what pressure does to managers. It inevitably changes them. Hence when outside the pressure cauldron, you’ll see a happier Jose, as you say.

I think City are better at wiping the floor against the teams outside the top 6 than Liverpool, even if Liverpool still win such games (albeit by less of a margin). It’s the top 6 mini league that will be all important again and will dictate where the title goes.

Just to add Sean – that’s probably the reason Gomez has been picked ahead of Matip. He has the pace to play a higher line which also compacts the space for the opposition and makes the press easier and more effective.

Sean, Klopp seemed to deny this when asked by Carragher. One thing I would say is that we did seem to press from the off last night, and we certainly pressed vs City in the second half. I think that’s probably what’s making us seem to play with a higher line at the moment, but we’ll see as the season develops.

Bit awkward timing of the match in midweek Mak. I’d definitely use it though to play the likes of Keita and Ox who need the game time. We can always bring the cavalry on later.

The front 3 (Salah, Mane, Firmino) look as sharp as tacks considering the long previous season and busy summer. Potential worry though in the latter part of the season.

After Arsenal’s late business, I’ll upgrade them one place to 5th (though it looks incredibly tight again around there from 4th to 6th). Still convinced Allegri or someone like Deschamps will take over Man Utd in the autumn.
Revised prediction:
1 = Liverpool
2 = Man City
3 = Spurs
4 = Man Utd
5 = Arsenal
6 = Chelsea
7 = Leicester/Everton_____________________________

Nine, as I said, I’m happy to be corrected after I initially read the situation wrongly. (The comments I stand by were that you need to be authoritative and have conviction to move players on you don’t need, standing up to big players if need be, and obviously Lampard has done that).

Nine, very much stand by those comments. As I said it was my “initial worry” that Lampard wasn’t in charge of the situation regarding Luiz and was taken by surprise by it. If it is as you say it was and had been brewing for some time and that Lampard knows exactly what he’s doing, then I’m happy to be corrected about it, and indeed it does demonstrate authority and conviction.

Really don’t want to see Origi on the wing. Play Shaqiri instead (or Ox). Or find a way of accommodating Origi up top.

Ed, think that’s a fake account!

We’ll see Nine, my initial worry with the saga was that some of the senior players perhaps didn’t have complete faith in the manager (which could spread). So long as Frank was the one completely in charge of the situation and knows exactly what he’s doing, then that’s fine. For the record I actually quite like Frank and think he could do ok at Chelsea (though there will be some bumps in the road ahead). And I’ll always admire the way he gave James O’Brien both barrels on LBC when his private life was being discussed.

Nine, if that is exactly what’s happened regarding Luiz, then we’ll see, but it’s just the way it seems to have come as such a surprise to Lampard? If it was a surprise, then surely he didn’t want him to leave?
As for Utd and more transformative players, there may not seem many about on the surface, but Allegri may well have identified others who weren’t necessarily world class, but could still potentially have had a big impact on Utd and still transformed them somewhat. My point here is I think Allegri would have been supported more than Solksjaer has. As I say, I think Utd’s signings under him are more safe, essential and somewhat board signings as opposed to being completely his.

Suppose Allegri had been appointed recently at Man Utd – you’re not telling me that all Man Utd’s transfers would have all been the same as they are now. Allegri would have identified some different targets – most probably players he had previously worked with, and some more transformative signings would have been made accordingly. Man Utd have instead stayed safe (if expensive) on players they are desperate for as opposed to looking for life changing ones.
Similarly, suppose Allegri had been appointed at Chelsea over the summer – do you really think Luiz would now be looking for a transfer??
Events at both clubs are rather telling for me.

Solksjaer is still very much unproven. Why start blowing money under him? (Like Liverpool did under Rodgers last season?) What Man Utd have done this summer is sign pretty safe (but not spectacular) signings. In any case I really do think Allegri will be appointed at some point this season. So they can add accordingly later on.

6th August 2019 at 9:08 pm in reply to: FA Community Shield 2019 – Liverpool V Man City 3pm – BT Sport 1 #44606Sky do now offer, via NOW TV, a mobile streaming service for some of their some sports channels including football for ÂŁ5.99 a month, which is something. That probably accounts for a good chunk of the new customers that Nine mentions above. But obviously if people can still find ways to stream for free (and on bigger screens) they’ll continue to do so.

6th August 2019 at 6:38 pm in reply to: FA Community Shield 2019 – Liverpool V Man City 3pm – BT Sport 1 #44590Nine, either way, the viewing figures are still pretty small per game, even if there are some additional illegal watchers – that’s very depressing in any case that it’s had to come to that. And given the rise of Netflix, Prime, etc, Sky’s exclusivity now is ultimately the football – if Sky lost that, they’d lose a hell of a lot of subscribers. As for other sports, yes true, but football is still the biggest sport and their flagship product.
As for the TV money and being worried about losing ground to big European clubs, I think this is exactly part of the problem. Clubs could perhaps, years ago, have accepted some years in the doldrums. Granted they’ve always been businesses to some extent, this cut throat culture now has never been so bad with clubs now not just wanting to try and win, but being greedy because they’ve become so rich off it. And the top 6 rarely if ever changes now. So if we continue on this path, yes, we’ll keep up with the bigger clubs. But at what price to the domestic league and other clubs? That doesn’t mean I think we should necessarily go back to all free to air, but a much better compromise I think can be reached to help make football on TV more affordable, as well as ensuring the competition and quality stays strong whilst ensuring revenues don’t over lean unfairly towards the top 6.
As Swiss Ramble has stated recently regarding the overseas TV revenue increase:
“In summary, all 20 Premier League clubs will earn more from the overseas rights increase, but it will be yet another case of “the rich getting richer”. In fact, half of the total ÂŁ295m increase goes to just six clubs. No prizes for guessing which ones.”
