Oh, O, here comes Moura…

By the sound of the Norwich game, two penalties were given that overruled the on pitch referee. And another overruling in the Arsenal game. Seems to be a lot of overruling going on this weekend. Has there been a review?

Only question now is how long before Klopp makes a change?

Sissoko just tore through our midfield there. So much for the reliable midfield.

Iโm not surprised in the slightest that Klopp has gone with that midfield. If you listened to him the other night after the Genk game, he was still rather critical of Ox and others regardless of the goals because they werenโt doing what Klopp wanted them to do. So, unsurprisingly, heโs opted for his safe and reliable midfield of Wijnaldum, Fabinho & Henderson, with obvious options on the bench.

Thing is, if there are changes to how VAR is implemented, surely they will now have to wait until next season, or else weโll have had two different systems in the same season, and some teams who have had big decisions that have gone against them (which may not have done with a revised system) would rightly feel aggrieved. So I suspect weโre stuck with the current system until May.

Hard to see where the wheels come off under Lampard at the moment. He has the kids playing well which will help give him loyalty in the dressing room, he still has a pretty good squad, and now has Pulisic banging them in. Abramovich and the club recruitment rarely makes bad calls…

Quite so Mak. Itโs almost as though the VAR team is Stalinist in its nature – i.e. the on pitch referees canโt be allowed to be seen to make mistakes and embarrass themselves, hence the on pitch referee must always be right. And this is supposed to be technology improving the game?

This is indeed the modern problem managers have. Whilst of course good managers can always eek more out of a team, regardless of the manager, a team should have a minimum standard that theyโll always play for pride no matter what. But now the manager is effectively responsible for instilling all the fight a team has whilst subsequently bearing all the responsibility. This is why top managers now also need to be very charismatic ones.

Leicester now have a better goal difference than Liverpool. Do we have our next managerial casualty?

Technology should *always* be used as an aid, nothing more. But I think the problem is the technology is using us as opposed to us using the technology. What should have happened is what VAR was supposed to do – be used when clear errors had been found. But because the officials can now give offsides by the cm on screens, they are letting the technology use them rather them using the technology sparingly as and when needed for big errors. But then on other decisions, like fouls, the VAR officials are effectively rejecting the technology because they donโt want to harm the integrity of the on pitch referee. So we have this very bizarre inconsistency in the use of the technology. Weโre over using it, to the nth degree in one regard, and rejecting it in another.
My solution. Get the refs to use the pitch side monitors when they need to, either for another look themselves if unsure or theyโve been told to look again if something may have missed. But give the on pitch referee the final call. And for offsides, build in a tolerance that accounts for real life swinging body movements as opposed to theoretical absolutism.

Iโm not against a better world club competition per se, but I do wish player well being was accounted for when these decisions were made. In any case, all this all ties in with steps towards some kind of break away league at some point so I suspect the number of teams in the premier league will be reduced in the next decade. Something will have to give at some point as the demand for more lucrative games increases.

Liverpool have conceded 6 goals in 3 games in the CL this season. Thatโs an average of 2 goals per game.
In the premier league, Liverpool have conceded 7 goals in 9 games. Thatโs an average of 0.78 goals per game.
Quite a difference. And the CL group weโre in is hardly out of this world. So I donโt think it was all down to the more attacking midfield last night that we still looked suspect at the back – are we being a bit overly cavalier in the CL so far this season?

Boy have we been missing this – when we’re struggling to break teams down, a midfielder pops up and takes the pressure off.

Strange 1st half. Seems we scored too early and then got too laid back and let them back into it a bit like we did with Salzburg. Are we getting a bit oversure of ourselves in the CL this season being the current champions?

Lucky, it’s what cost us last season in the league! We’ll be the absolute complete side if these 2 now start delivering.

I believe it is. Will do him the world of good. So important we start sharing the burden of goals in midfield.

Thing is, given the opposition, we arguably didn’t need that midfield tonight due to the front 3 being back. But with Milner having to drop to full back, and perhaps Klopp giving others a rest, he’s gone with the line up he has. I’ll watch with interest…
