Think this somewhat sums things up, albeit in harsher language.
Woodward: He’s fucking shit!
Fergie: You fucking picked him!

Sean I agree with everyone above that Solksjaer is a goner, and the job is clearly too big for him. Indeed when Solksjaer admitted before the Liverpool game that they’d have a better chance cause Utd were better against more expansive sides and struggled vs defensive ones – such a statement (even if true) is not something that a Man Utd manager should publicly admit. So I’m with you all on that. But given that no manager looks like they could make top 4 now at Man Utd, I don’t think there’s quite the rush now to change it. And there does seem to be life there today, and Solksjaer does seem to be getting a reaction out of the kids. Would another manager play and develop the kids for example? Would it maybe be better to let him keep blooding the youngsters for the next 6 months until they make the change? Ed sees more than me so he’ll have more insight on what should happen.

It does look as though Solksjaer has somewhat steadied the ship in recent weeks. They’re still not great but they are generally performing. If a new manager came in, there might be a bit of a bounce but they’d probably revert back to where they are now. But top 4 looks way off either way.

Nine, that’s Sheff Utd’s annual wage bill of £14 million. Sanchez’s annual wage that Utd are paying is about £300k x 52 weeks = £15.6 million. So it adds up.

Didn’t see this coming in the first half.

Yeh it’s a good point Lucky about putting things into context regarding the competition. I’ve never really rated him hugely myself. And one thing that really wound me up about him was that in post match interviews, if it was a poor result, I’d sometimes hear him simply say “this is football”, as though life’s a lottery and that was an acceptable excuse. I know we hear other managers say it, but it really gets on my wick. Imagine if in another profession your boss asked why you weren’t getting the results needed and you just shrugged your shoulders and said “this is life”. I think your boss would be making you a bit less employed. But managers seem to get away with saying these things. It’s like the “it was just one of those days” excuse. Sure one player can have an off day, but all 11?

I agree, merely pointing out that if that was your bank who had thought they were bringing in the right man and it failed but they still had to pay him off a big amount, they’d be fury. But with football, people don’t care in the same way with big pay offs for failures. All they will be thinking is to keep spending to pursue success.

It’s utterly ridiculous Banjo, yet as the point I’ve been making above, the Man Utd fans will be quite happy if they keep throwing huge bucks at it in future seasons because it’s all about the pursuit of success whatever the cost…even if they don’t get the success.

Think you’ve picked me up wrong, the point is Everton will have effectively spent £20 million on managers in the last year if they now ditch Silva. It may well be the right call to now ditch him. The point is they’ve blown £20 million and failed in the last year most probably because they didn’t do the right due diligence on him a year ago. But I think they tried to be over clever in their pursuit of success, though if they’d kept Big Sam they might well be better off now than they were. But tribal fans, whilst they may get frustrated, still tolerate such things because they want success.

Yes but the fans of the club are still very much connected to everything and ultimately are the ones pressuring the board to make changes and decisions. As Adlab said it’s ultimately tribalism, which in turn causes irrational behaviour in the constant pursuit of success. And if big bucks gets blown, so be it.

And that’s the interesting thing isn’t it Nine? When bankers reward themselves for failure, there’s outrage. But in football, fans just shrug their shoulders and say these things happen. Strange.

Regarding Silva at Everton, don’t forget that to bring him in to Everton, they first had to pay off Allardyce £6 million. They then had to compensate Watford £4 million. If they sack Silva who is contracted to 2021, they’ll have to pay him off about another £6 million. If you include Silva’s current salary for the last year, that’s another £3 million spent. So £20 million potentially thrown around over the last year. For what exactly?

I understand the authorities can’t really come out and admit VAR is a disaster from a PR point of view, and the other problem is they can’t really change it now this season or else we’d have had two different systems in the same season and there’d be no consistency. So we have a very bad system but it’s the same for everyone. They’ve got to change it next season though. I was hoping they’d at least start using the monitors more, but that looks like it’s been thrown out the window.

Another utterly absurd offside call by VAR.

I did fancy City before the game simply because I think they’re better without the ball. But there is very much scope there for Chelsea to have a go and City don’t look quite the same side as they have. I’d expect a few more goals yet.

It was a bit unlucky that for Chelsea – it somehow went through 3 players and then got deflected. The game is there for Chelsea still, but I just worry they’re just a touch naive in their play to make the most of it.

Rare to see an away team with so much possession at the Etihad.

Thought we might struggle today. A loss of continuity and fluidity after the internationals and Palace not an easy place to go to. Hopefully we’ll wake up more in the second half.
