At the same time, to win the CL regardless of what position you are in as a club, still takes a very special set of ingredients – the main one being a real togetherness with real leadership. Steven Gerrard over that period pretty much single handedly carried us to that trophy at times just as Van Dijk has been so important in this era.
Here’s a question for my fellow Liverpool fans. If you had to choose now between either Gerrard or Van Dijk to be in the team, who would it be? I’d say Gerrard could have more influence on a game, but that Van Dijk (who is now effectively de facto captain) is a better captain, leader and presence on the pitch.

It’s true that as great as the CL win for Liverpool was in 2005, it was somewhat farcical at that time to call ourselves the champions of Europe when we finished 4th and then 5th in the league over that period.
However, we finished just 1 point off the champions last season, and are now 8 points clear at the top and have been in championship form since at least the turn of the beginning of the year. So to now call ourselves the champions of Europe has a hell of a lot more credence than it did in 2005.
Do we still need to win the premier league to fully establish ourselves? Of course we do.

Yeh Sean, in some ways I miss the old TT and non instant posting – it stopped things getting out of hand and it meant things quickly moved on. And the overall website was brilliant in terms of the overall hub and features. All good things come to an end I spose. It’s good to have the residual community on here though.

Brian, you might as well sign up to the free trial for the month if you’re a new customer – obviously remembering to cancel later or else you go on to a contract.

It’s a shame about TT. The site seems like it’s increasingly falling to pieces. The back button disappeared and now there are adverts in the middle of posts. Still a few good posters on there, but most of the exodus on to here seems almost complete now.

Ed, if he’s still there in January do the board give him money? Or do they only target more safe young and up and coming players and/or tried and tested ones like in the summer?

Love the insight into Origi from Milner:
All is well on Planet Origi.

Man Utd played pretty well in the bit I saw tonight. It seems they raise their game in the big games but struggle more against the rest.

A great nights work, and a good run out for Shaqiri and Origi.

That couldn’t have been legal on Van Dijk during the corner.

Mak (without sounding like I’m going on too much about this now) I do think the fact Van Dijk got more first choice votes than Messi (69 vs 61) does say a lot because if you were to adopt such a first past the post system, what you’re actually doing is forcing people’s hands to vote on a clear winner. With a proportional vote like the one they have, you ending giving credit to secondary and tertiary choices – when such choices may have been made more on a whim because they had to come up with other choices. So the fact Van Dijk won on the number of first choices and pretty much equalled Messi’s points totals tell you a lot.
Also huge respect for the Sri Lankan vote who voted for Trent Alexander-Arnold as the best player in the world!

Can’t quite work out what’s happening at Everton. I spoke to an Evertonian who was at home game not long ago and he said they were very good and played really well. But then they have had a series of very poor results. Yet they don’t seem to have downed tools or anything. Don’t know if it’s down to injuries and not getting a consistent team out? Gbamin looks like he’s been a big loss for them though.
But certainly wouldn’t take anything for granted tonight.

Brian Blue “Nil…what would be great for me and I would certainly subscribe to any channel that offered it was a switch to turn off the commentators and leave the crowd noise!!!!!”
With Amazon Prime you can do just that Brian allowing you to toggle between audio commentary and stadium fx.

Different broadcaster tonight but same pundits. Yawn. Give someone else as go. Just a big gravy train for the established pundits.
