26th February 2020 at 8:40 pm in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #77000What’s the deal with Isco? Every season he seems to be linked with a move away from Madrid, yet every time I watch them, he seems to play.

Interesting discussion last night after the game about whether we can dominate in the years ahead. I think we have one of the biggest transfer windows ahead in the summer which we really need to get right. You sense it will probably be someone like Werner who will come in as we tend to be very finicky about a player’s qualities in terms of mentality, work rate as well as being young and offering value. And if reports are true today that his release clause is just £30 million vs £51 million, then you’d think he’ll be one of the first players we’ll snap up in the summer. But would we still target another attacker after that? I guess it depends on who leaves.
As for Keita, I find myself increasingly clinging to hope rather than evidence that he’ll really step up. I don’t know whether perhaps Keita was asked by Klopp to play a more defensive role last night and maybe got caught in two minds more often than not, but he obviously needs to do better. Bizarrely though, he does look more settled in the team and the club. He maybe does need a run of games, but there lies the problem, what with his injury record, is he going to get them? So this is another area of the pitch that needs looking at.

24th February 2020 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Week 27: Turn it on at HT and turn it right off again… #75130And as I’ve said before, I think we miss Henderson more than Fabinho, and I think tonight is demonstrating that.

I think what’s done is done, the idea of handing trophies to a previous runner up is something I don’t think such teams would want anyway.
Everyone knew City had outspent everyone when these trophies were being won so they never going to get the same respect as a lower spending team anyway. It’s a shame in some part because an awful lot of hard work still went into that success, (which will always be the case). But it was the shear volumes of money being thrown around, and quite a lot blown and wasted, i.e. money they arguably didn’t even need to spend, which I think tarnished the success and left more of a bitter taste. I mean Kompany, probably one of City’s most important players of the last decade, hardly cost anything and was bought just weeks/months I think before the big takeover.
And for the record, Man Utd certainly haven’t covered themselves in glory in recent years with the money they’ve blown and wasted.
So regardless of whether any punishment is dished out, that’s ultimately what people will remember.

18th February 2020 at 9:43 pm in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #71319You know what Mak, you look at Napoli away, you look tonight, and even in some league games, and this team do lack sparks and struggle sometimes to break teams down. Mané is a huge miss in the second half. Would like to see a bit more creativity, dribbling, pace and goals in the summer.

18th February 2020 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #71309I still think we lack some sparks in this team, particularly in games like this. I’d bring on Keita if I was Jürgy…start driving at them more.

18th February 2020 at 9:13 pm in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #71287I think Nine means Liverpool are better at controlling it and with faster feet should score. Have made some silly mistakes though. Atletico haven’t, that’s the main difference.
Given there’s only been 2 days rest + travelling since the away game at Norwich you can forgive us a bit to get back into the groove.

18th February 2020 at 1:54 pm in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #71035We all saw how we struggled away to Napoli earlier in the season, and I expect a similar kind of game – a rugged side who tend to be a tough nut to crack. Players like Mané will be crucial for us tonight in trying to unlock the door, and he’s just come back in time.

What surprises me about that offside image is the angle it was taken at – it wasn’t even level with the camera. Can they be sure these calibrations are quite right? Not to mention getting the timing right from the moment the ball was released.

What’s basically happened here is that the new City board saw what Chelsea did under Abramovich and thought we’ll follow that plan, sounds good to us, and even with FFP coming in, they still went full steam ahead because they never thought UEFA would ultimately punish them (or these hacked emails would ever come out) and they, in a sense, called UEFA’s bluff because they’d argue they helped make money for UEFA and made the competition stronger. But UEFA haven’t bluffed. And now they’re unsurprisingly peeved, big time.
We’ll go through the motions and all this will most probably lead to a compromise punishment of 1 year (that the initial 2 year punishment has basically invited anyway), and so the damage done will be more limited.
At the end of the day, this is all about money. And money talks.
