Still worth a punt on Man Utd coming back to win. They’re very reliable vs clubs below them.

We’ll see Sean. Whilst as you say its good that other players are now chipping in with goals throughout the team, I still think we need a reliable goal scorer who can score in tight spaces out of nothing. Its so important to have that quality for a top team, particularly away from home. If Nunez turns out to be more of an attacking winger than a striker then OK. But in that case then we’ll need to bring in another striker at some point.
I also think something’s not right in midfield. I wonder if we have too many similar players in there. We just lack some balance for me. But because of Klopp, it’s all delivering…at the moment. I just worry over a season we’re going to drop one too many points because of these things. Be interesting to see if we do any business in January. On a side note, I’d consider playing Elliot more. I think he provides energy and a quickness of pass in the final third that would probably help Nunez too. Maybe sacrifice one of the midfielders for him and help link the rest of the midfield to the attack.

Good to see you back Mak. As I said before, I still don’t think we’ve replaced Mané. He would always come up with a goal. Salah is currently our only reliable goal scorer for me, and I think when Nunez plays in a ‘3’ up top with him Salah ends up being pushed out further wide and you lose something from him. I don’t think Diaz is really there to score goals, I think he’s more of a traditional winger. Not quite sure what Gakpo’s role is yet or if he’s trying to be used in the Bobby role. Jota is a good finisher but I think needs the service. And my thoughts on Nunez are that he’s currently more of an impact player, a good option to come on after a game has loosened up a bit like Newcastle away. But he can’t be relied upon to score as things are for me.
So we’re still missing Mané. He had that quality and quickness of touch/pace to score out of almost nothing in tight spaces. Like Haaland recently did against us. Like Trent did when he scored vs City. It’s that kind of ability that gets you a goal particularly away from home. And getting that first goal is so important to take the pressure off. This season again we’re very good at home. But away from home, this is why we’ve got less certainty that we can win imo.

Why didn’t it work out for Emery at Arsenal?
Ed, I was going to start a thread on this some time ago but never got round to it. This is quite an interesting article which I think sheds some light on it.

As I say, Man Utd have no problem beating teams beneath them, and because there are more teams beneath them than above them, they can rack up quite a few points. But they have a glass ceiling because of their record vs teams above them.

City have picked up just 3 points out of a possible 12 from their last 4 games. Almost unheard of?

I think we’re still missing Mané’s goals. Not enough goals in our front players imo.

3rd December 2023 at 6:30 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 14 – December is here! #211082He’s had criticism recently Ange, some justified but his teams never stop trying. It’s the like the ultimate risk reward strategy.

26th November 2023 at 10:57 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 13!!! – The Hard Slog Over :-) #211003Thing is with Man Utd, even though they’ve obviously spent a lot over the last decade and not bought particularly well imo, they’ve still bought some quality which will tend to still keep them within touching distance of the top clubs. So they can only fall so far down. Indeed the lowest position they’ve dropped to over the last decade was actually a decade ago in 2013 when they finished 7th under Moyes. Their average finishing position over the last decade I think is around 4-5th. So I think because of that there perhaps is not enough impetus to really go for a title challenge. Put another way, whilst there may have been some lows over the last decade, there’s not really been a catastrophe either. Is it a bit like when Arsenal constantly finished in the top 4 under Wenger with the odd domestic trophy? Did things get too comfortable? When they had two consecutive 8th place finishes under Arteta did that then focus minds at the club to turn things around?
If Ten Hag does steady the ship and finish top 4 again this season, the fans may seem happy with that. But is the club just going to be locked into another top 4 cycle kidding themselves they’re getting closer but actually just standing still? Is their spending power keeping them in that cycle?

26th November 2023 at 12:57 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 13!!! – The Hard Slog Over :-) #210964Arsenal still missing a top draw talisman at the top of the pitch for me, like a Haaland or Salah. We are still missing someone like Rice in midfield. So both sides just a bit short still compared to City. Apparently talk of us not going for Andre in January now?

Yep, had success abroad too. I wish more of our managers would gain experience in other countries and leagues, it would do them the world of good. RIP.

25th November 2023 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 13!!! – The Hard Slog Over :-) #210948Yeh we weren’t great today, but a very good point. As I said before the game, Nunez has been poor starting games away from home. I also think we sacrifice other players like Salah who I think ends up more wide and we lose a flow to our attacking game for me. But had Nunez come on later in the game when the game loosened up a bit, he could have had more success with his pace to stretch City.

24th November 2023 at 7:02 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 13!!! – The Hard Slog Over :-) #210909Yeh draw probably best result we can hope for. Think with both teams playing expansive football both teams tend to be strong at home with the crowd behind them when playing each other.
