Leicester have offered very little today.

If that’s so Paxton about behaviour off the pitch why did Vardy win the award after using a racial slur earlier in the season he won it? Also why did Suarez win the award after previously biting Ivanovic the season before?, of which he actually served a ban in the season he won it.

Liverpool turned from a top 4 side to champions of Europe, the World and England as soon as Van Dijk and Alisson came in. Van Dijk in particular pretty much turned around our defence single-handedly. If that isn’t influence, I don’t know what is. Henderson as I say undoubtedly has many admirable qualities. But they are not at the same level or order as what the other two have brought in. I think some have simply felt they had to reward Henderson because he is an English captain of a World, European & English league champion. And bear in mind the Football writers have never awarded Van Dijk their trophy in previous seasons. That’s just bizarre, particularly if influence is the key factor here.

As I said on another thread, if Henderson played in a more exposed position like CB, I don’t think he’d have lasted at a top club. But in midfield we can get away with it. Look, he’s the consummate professional, he’s all over the pitch, and we do undoubtedly miss him when injured, more than Fabinho in my opinion. So for me he’s more a tactical, off the ball player than a talented player, who plays an important role in the Klopp setup. So you can see why he divides opinion so much. And personally one can’t not acknowledge the journey he’s been on from nearly being disposed of by the club to being the captain of this side.

But as important a role Henderson may play in the side, I just can’t put such things as hard work and commitment on the same level as other criteria like talent, goals scored, trickery, assists, etc because they are simply more difficult to do. Also players like Wijnaldum play arguably just as important a role and carry out a similar task.

I think KDB has been the best player in the league this season and he personally would have got my vote. He nearly always plays the right intelligent ball in pressure situations. And he is hugely talented.

So we have to freshen up. I now think we have made a major mistake in not recruiting at least one of Pulisic or Werner. We know how hard it can be to find top players. I can only hope the club knows what it’s doing, but at the same time I also have the fear the owners are quite happy using Klopp to mask our squad investment. Also remember we’ve now had at least two seasons at the top; the idea that can continue with this same group of players and limited investment, I just don’t see it.

I think we have to invest this summer. There’s an awful lot of hype about us at the moment about us dominating in the years ahead and I’m far from convinced about it. It very much reminds me of when Andy Murray started to win the big tennis tournaments and there was talk of him then dominating in the years ahead. It didn’t happen, for several reasons, the main one being I think that he had absolutely battered his body to get to the top and the injuries had taken their toll. Now that’s nothing against him, but I do fear there’s a potential parallel with us in that we’re a close knit group of players who have played an awful lot of football over recent years and are therefore at risk of burnout. And it’s what ultimately happened at Dortmund after their success.

Yeh United will still be favourites, but in a one off game with Leicester also going for the same prize, it will certainly be interesting watching. I’d expect a cagey start by both sides with the game increasingly opening up as it goes along. I also think both managers could also fall into overthinking how to set up.

If Keita can stay fit, he could be a big player for us. But watching the game last night I can’t hide that I think we missed a trick not going for Pulisic. Our front 3 are just too comfortable, they have no real competition. We are desperate for it there. I know Salah does still have his great moments, but I thought last night typified a lot of his season; just too many over exuberant flicks, losing the ball too often and not converting enough. Pulisic would easily have got games for us and put pressure on the other front 3 to keep them on their toes. Just strange that we tracked Pulisic for so long and then let one of our rivals get him. We weren’t ruthless enough. I’d be feeling pretty confident about next season if we had him in the ranks. Every team, even championship winning teams, have to keep adding every year.

In fact reminds me of the 4-4 Arsenal game some years ago at Anfield.

Nine, Chelsea remind me a bit of Arsenal under Wenger at the moment – and I don’t mean that as a slur or insult. Arsenal played very very good football at that time and always kept playing good football even when they were losing. They just lacked a bit of steel in midfield and at the back to get back to the top – such ingredients that never came. They should do at Chelsea though. Very jealous of you having Pulisic too…

Could see that Chelsea goal coming, they’ve actually been pretty good up top for a lot of the game. Disappointed to concede though. Seems a lot of space for both sides.

Mak, even before his recent form, he’s just looked so much more settled and looks happy here. If the injury problems stay away, think we may finally have a player.
