They do Threeps, but then it also demonstrates how far the top six have drifted away from the other clubs.

Just looking at the now dominance of the top six clubs in the FA Cup. Since 1990, the top six have won the FA Cup:
Arsenal: 9 times
Chelsea: 7 times
Man Utd: 6 times
Liverpool: 3 times
Man City: 2 times
Spurs: 1 timeSo out of the 31 seasons, 28 of them were won by the top six.

Perhaps Threeps, but my point is under these circumstances it makes it harder to judge how much they’re willing to invest in the team.

Depends if offers comes in for the players in question Mak. All our front 3 are now 28 years old. They are at their peak so if they do leave in a year or so, they ainโt really going to be a headline signing for someone. Also, as effective as they are, individually speaking I donโt think they carry the same wow factor as players like Suarez or Torres. FSG were just fortunate that Barca were desperate enough to put in an absurd offer for a then 25 year old Coutinho that no club could turn down and which was obviously re-invested well. But now weโre at the top, it would have been interesting to see what FSG were willing to spend but now weโve had the pandemic, they can somewhat hide behind that.

Some good points made by all. And I’m very much aware that the likes of other top clubs like Chelsea have blown money on the likes of Torres, Schevchenko, & Morata, and interestingly, these players tended to be bought after previous success almost in a desperate attempt to stay at the top. All these players cost a fortune and flopped or weren’t value for money. I also think an increasing problem, as has been alluded to, is that any premier league club looking to buy on the continent, now has to pay a premium because the selling club can take advantage of the wealth of the PL, and this now even applies to young kids. So yes, it is difficult. But it’s a challenge top clubs have to deal with, and clubs always have to freshen up to keep others on their toes. I just see a very good first team but not enough outside of that to give Klopp flexibility. It’s vital we don’t fall into previous mistakes of letting big players go first, and then worrying about how to replace them at the 11th hour. However I will say that if Keita can maintain form next season, I’ll be less worried.

Threeps, but our poor form doesnโt just start once weโd wrapped up the league. In February and March we lost 2 CL games, an FA Cup game and a league game heavily to Watford. And leading up to that Watford defeat in the league we only just narrowly beat Norwich & West Ham. Also when City wrapped up the league a few years ago with 5 games to spare, they kept playing and generally continued to blow sides away.

Just flagged up this premier league table (linked below) on another thread which covers the period from 20 Dec 19 to the end of the season, i.e. the second half of the season. Weโre still top, but City are just 4 points behind but with a game in hand. Just a bit of a warning there for us if ever we needed one…

Interesting premier league table from 20 Dec 2019 to end of season linked below i.e. since Arteta took over – Arsenal 6th & Chelsea 7th on equal points but with Chelsea playing one game less. Both have similar home records but Chelsea have the better away record. I remember flagging up a similar stat when Arsenal & Chelsea played the Europa League final last year which Chelsea won comfortably. So I still expect a Chelsea win but I expect a closer game this time around.
On a side note, you will note Southampton are in 4th place in this table further highlighting their remarkable turnaround. Also Leicester are 16th in this table, further highlighting their collapse. Incredible.

So taking that into account, has it really had much of an effect? Would VAR not be better suited to cups?

You canโt read too much into this. If Utd were trailing Wolves longer than they actually did, they may themselves have responded sooner (or Wolves may have choked). It would have changed the psychology and dynamics.

Rodgers is tactically weak. Heโs a good coach, but not so much a good manager.

Yes most managers no doubt exchange similar blows week in week out but we just donโt usually hear them because of the fans. Still though, just because itโs a part of the culture doesnโt mean it reflects well on the game. If the referees ever micโd up like they do in rugby, theyโd have to bleep most of it in football.

Yes it was a great turnaround by Hassenhuttl. They lost 8 of their first 12 games of the season. Had the Watford owners been in charge, theyโd have sacked him. Keeping a cool head amidst much fear and pressure is *the* key aspect of leadership.

As regards disappointment of the season or rather disgrace of the season, probably worth mentioning the Watford owners. 4 different managers this season – and they sack Pearson with two games to go? What an utter shambles. How could they ever hope to gain any kind of consistency or harmony under such conditions? Though what has allegedly happened at Wigan also outrageous.

GJ, and it’s incredible that you have managed to find KDB who, let’s be honest, is very much worthy of Silva’s shirt.

Didnโt see the red card incident but watched quite a bit of that game. Thought Leicester were very poor. Didnโt look like they had anything to play for.
